SAN DIEGO (CNS) - State regulators have approved .1 million in funding for a slew of hydrogen refueling stations, including four in San Diego County, officials said Saturday.The funding, for a total of 123 stations statewide, will "expand California's early commercial light duty hydrogen refueling and fuel cell electric vehicle markets and (will) accommodate the projected FCEV roll-out in 2021-2024," according to the California Energy Commission.Funds were awarded to three companies -- FirstElement, Iwatani and Shell -- for 36 hydrogen stations to service passenger vehicles. SAN DIEGO (CNS) -- The first woman to assume command of a U.S. nuclear-powered aircraft carrier has been assigned command of the San Diego-based USS Abraham Lincoln, the Navy announced Wednesday.Capt. Amy Bauernschmidt will lead one of the Navy's 11 nuclear-powered aircraft carriers, after previously serving as the ship's executive officer from September 2016 to January 2019.That post was also historic, as she was the first woman to serve as second-in-command aboard an aircraft carrier, according to the Navy.Bauernschmidt is slated to take command of USS Abraham Lincoln this summer."I am incredibly honored and humbled to be selected," she said of her assignment. ``I love leading sailors and I take that responsibility extremely seriously."The Milwaukee native was part of the first graduating class in which women were allowed to serve aboard combatant ships and aircraft when she graduated from the United States Naval Academy in May 1994.She was designated as a naval aviator in 1996 and has served with several helicopter squadrons throughout her career. 1074

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Police sought the public's help Tuesday to find a Navy SEAL veteran last seen more than two weeks ago at his residence in the Chollas Lake Park area.Johnathan Steven Surmont, 45, was last seen Aug. 27 and was last heard from when he contacted his ex-wife Aug. 31 to tell her he was in a "rough place" in Los Angeles, according to a missing person bulletin from the San Diego Police Department. His vehicle was found four days later, on Sept. 3, in La Jolla.In a video posted to Vimeo dated three years ago, Surmont described himself as a disabled veteran who spent 15 years as a Navy SEAL."I was a SEAL sniper, communicator and unmanned systems expert," he said in a testimonial for the Red Circle Foundation, an organization that describes itself as supporting the families of fallen and wounded U.S. Special Operations forces."I'm a single father and a small business owner," Surmont said before describing a long list of injuries, which he said included "a traumatic brain injury" and "about 17 different areas that I'm experiencing chronic pain on a daily basis." Some of the injuries were apparently sustained during his time as a SEAL, while others occurred in a car crash."One of the things I struggle with is, I look fine," Surmont said with a laugh in a lighter moment of the mostly solemn testimonial. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The historic Hotel del Coronado is reopening Friday, ending the first closure in the hotel's 132-year history.The famous red-roofed hotel on Coronado Island's Orange Avenue closed with other hotels in late March as the COVID-19 pandemic reached San Diego.Hotels have started to reopen in June, following state and county public health guidelines. The Hotel del Coronado, a major tourist attraction, will reopen with limited amenities and reduced occupancy.Hotel del Coronado General Manager Harold Rapoza told 10News guests and hotel staff can expect to feel safe and comfortable after numerous modifications."We disinfect all the high-touch areas, including the light switches, remote control, door handles. We sanitize the entire room, and then we put a seal on the outside of the door so when guests do check in, they know that no one has accessed the room. They are the first person to access the room since it was cleaned and disinfected," Rapoza said.Rapoza added face coverings/masks will be required for all hotel staff and guests while in public areas. He also said there will be sanitation stands and cleaning wipes around the resort.Rapoza said as soon as they learned the hotel would be allowed to reopen, staff worked "fast and furious" to meet new health and safety guidelines."This is a very busy resort in the summer. There's a lot of foot traffic and we wanted to make sure we could manage through the guidelines. We want everyone to come and enjoy the Del and see the Del this summer. We're excited to show them our new amenities and our new protocols," he told 10News.The luxury villas the Beach Village at The Del will also open Friday. The hotel's main pool and Cabana guestrooms will remain closed until at least July 19 until upgrades are completed.Until the pool reopens, hotel management said guests will be able to borrow sand chairs for the beach and umbrellas for free.
