SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- The San Diego chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated is celebrating 65 years of their Leadership AKAdemy. The program mentors a group of teenage girls every year. The AKAdemy ends with a memorable ball. The AKA San Diego chapter has one mission: encourage scholastic achievement, strong ethical standards, and "be a service to all mankind." For over six decades, those values have been used to mentor girls around the county. During the 1950s, the chapter held its first debutante ball to expose young girls to cultural opportunities. It was historically the debut of young ladies ages 16 to 19 as official members of society. "Now it has grown into a leadership academy to where we equip the young people with life skills," says Chapter President, Deborah Davis-Gillespie. The teens attend different workshops, like college readiness and etiquette, each week for the months' long program. This year's Leadership AKAdemy has a total of 16 girls. "I'm just really happy to be a part of the whole process and the whole experience," says participant Kennedy Harris. Community service is also at the top of the list for the program. The girls participate in community events like the Martin Luther King Jr. Parade and the MLK Day of Service in Balboa Park. The goal is to help others and for the girls to have an appreciation for the communities in which they live. "It's really nice to be able to make those connections early on in my life," says participant Sanai Mitchell. After months of workshops, events, and dance practice with their escorts for the ball, the girls are now just a few weeks away from their big night. They will be presented to their families and community as young women, ready to take on the world. "It's an evolution, its life-changing and they walk away a better person than when they came in," says Davis- Gillespie.This year's AKA Leadership AKAdemy will be held on Saturday, March 21st at the Legacy Hotel and Resort in Mission Valley. 2000
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Archaeologists have confirmed a long-time suspicion of historians and say that famed Alcatraz prison was built over a Civil War-era military fortification.SFGate reports researchers have found a series of buildings and tunnels under the prison yard of Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary, which once held Al Capone.A study published in "Near Surface Geophysics" says archaeologists used ground-penetrating radar and terrestrial laser scans and historical maps and photographs.They found fully buried structures, ammunition magazines and tunnels.Historians believe workers built over existing structures when the prison was built in the 20th century.Alcatraz first came to the attention of the U.S. government after it wrestled control of California from Mexico in the 1840s.Its location in San Francisco Bay made it attractive for military fortification purposes. 886

San Diego (KGTV)- As teachers come up with their virtual lesson plans for the upcoming school year, one local music teacher is turning to the community. Students at Grossmont High School need guitars for class."We'll have 80 students plus taking guitar this year," says teacher Jeremy Cooke. "It is vital for them to be able to play a guitar at home."The high school is not able to provide an instrument for each student."We're a Title I school. So over half of our students get free or reduced lunch, and many can't afford their own guitar."Cooke made a post on Facebook asking for the community to donate any used or new guitars. He says the response has been amazing. As of Monday afternoon, Cooke has received over 30 guitars. Many others are pledging to donate."I've been driving around the county picking up guitars, meeting the people who are donating, and its really neat to see, especially during these tough times."As part of his distance learning plan, Cook has compiled multiple videos recorded over the years to help students learn to play the guitar.Once the class is finished, the students will return the donated guitars to the school for others to use the following year.Grossmont High School is still in need of more guitars. Cooke says he is accepting used and new acoustic or electric guitars for the upcoming school year. SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) -- San Diegans have a new opportunity to go back to school without fear of being saddled with student loan debt.The San Diego Workforce Partnership and U.C. San Diego Extension are teaming up to create what's called an income share agreement. Here's how it works:People complete a roughly yearlong certificate program in digital marketing, business intelligence, front-end web design or java programming at UCSD Extension. The fund will front the student's entire tuition, plus support services to total about ,500. Grads only make payments on it if they have a job that pays at least ,000 a year. "Once you get a foothold in some of these jobs, your salary potential grows even faster," said Andy Hall, chief operating officer of the San Diego Workforce Partnership. Grads would be billed 6 to 8 percent of their pre-tax salary per month, but they'd never pay more than ,500. Plus, all payments top after three to five years. The idea is that the most successful grads can fund the next generation of those looking to retrain.Google.org, Strada Education Network and the James Irvine Foundation are backing the program, along with an anonymous donor. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Google announced Wednesday it has achieved a breakthrough in quantum computing, saying it has developed an experimental processor that took just minutes to complete a calculation that would take the world's best supercomputer thousands of years.The feat could open the door someday to machines so blazingly fast that they could revolutionize such tasks as finding new medicines, developing vastly smarter artificial intelligence systems and, most ominously, cracking the encryption that protects some of the world's most closely guarded secrets.Such practical uses are still probably decades away, scientists said.
