JAMUL, Calif. (KGTV) - An 11-year-old girl told the San Diego County Sheriff's Department she was nearly kidnapped Tuesday afternoon near Jamul Primary school on Lyons Valley Road. The child told deputies she was walking on a dirt trail around 3:49 p.m. when she was approached and forcibly grabbed by an unknown man. She was able to escape, suffering only a minor abrasion on her arm.Deputies and the Sheriff's ASTREA helicopter searched the area but were unable to find any suspects or evidence. In a sketch released by the department, the man has a distinct scar on his cheek and appears to have a droopy eye. The Jamul Dulzura Union School District is working with the sheriff’s department to keep students safe. All schools in the district will start at their normally scheduled time, but deputies will have extra patrols at Jamul Primary before and after school for the rest of the week.Detectives from the Sheriff's Rancho San Diego Station are handling the investigation. The suspect was described as a thin man who is clean shaven, wearing a dark ball cap, a dark hooded sweatshirt, dark jeans and either a red or maroon shoes.  1183

KAKE, Alaska. – A rare white killer whale was recently spotted off the southeast coast of Alaska. The University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) says people on an 80-foot charter boat witnessed the “less-than-once-in-a-lifetime” event on Aug. 7, just offshore of the village of Kake.UAF graduate student Stephanie Hayes was working as first mate of the boat and was among the lucky few who spotted “glowing” orca in a pod of killer whales. The rest of the whales in the pod, about three or four others, were the typical dairy-cow black-and-white colors, according to UAF.Hayes recognized how rare the sighting was, because she had studied killer whales during her undergraduate work in British Columbia.“There have only been about eight white killer whales ever recorded in the world,” Hayes told UAF. “To have one in Southeast was an incredible phenomenon.”Hayes told UAF that the white killer whale has a condition called leucism, which she defined as a “lack of vibrancy” in its pigmentation.“Caused by a mutation in the whale’s DNA, leucism is different from albinism, in which a creature is all white, with pink eyes,” wrote UAF in a press release.Turns out, the whale had been spotted before by researchers and named Tl’uk, a word for moon in the language of the Salish peoples of the Pacific Northwest. When Tl’uk leaves its pod, Hayes says its glow might be a disadvantage, perhaps alerting its prey of its approach. And, a new pod might not accept it after it reaches sexual maturity. 1492

Kentucky Gov. Matt Bevin on April 26 signed House Bill 528, which makes Kentucky the first state in the country to establish a blanket presumption "that joint custody and equally shared parenting time is in the best interest of the child" in every divorce case."This should lead to less fighting between parents because we're not pitting parents against parents anymore in a winner-take-all situation," National Parents Organization Kentucky chairman Matt Hale said. "We think that'll lead to less parenting conflict and better outcomes for children."The law includes provisions to disqualify unfit parents based on histories of domestic violence or significant mental health problems as well as physical distance that would make co-parenting impractical. In general, Hale said, the new law will ensure children don't automatically "lose" a parent to divorce and parents' relationships after divorce don't have to become hostile over custody issues."What kid wouldn't want both of their parents in their life?" divorced mother Alexandra Beckman said. "What I have experienced with the children going back and forth has been really good."The law will take effect in June. 1177

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Imagine getting a COVID-19 test from the comfort of your own home. That's what Costco is offering by selling saliva test kits online. They come at a steep price. The basic test kit is listed for 9.99, while a kit with video observation is 9.99.The KSHB I-team reached out to Costco for more information about the products. However, the company's corporate communications team was unwilling to respond to any questions, adding that it is not staffed to do so."As always our focus is to have merchandise available for our members at low warehouse prices," a spokesman wrote in an email.According to the Costco website, the kits are administered by Azova, which is a telemedicine platform.A fact sheet for patients found on the Azova website shows the test used is the P23 Labs TaqPath SARS CoV-2 Assay. The test has not been cleared or approved by the Food and Drug Administration. However, like many tests, it has received emergency use authorization from the agency. That means the makers of the test need to continually submit data to the FDA, which will evaluate the information and study the accuracy of diagnoses.Azova claims 98% of positive tests and 99% of negative test results are accurate."Saliva testing can be very accurate. It is probably chosen (for at-home testing) because the chance of having user error is much less than say a nasal swab," Dr. Dana Hawkinson of the University of Kansas Health System said.A customer who purchases a kit from Costco must complete a health assessment online with Azova and register for a lab order and test kit.The actual kit should come the next day, but results won't arrive for one to three days after the lab receives the sample. The kit with video observation, however, promises results in 24-48 hours."If that's the only thing that you're using for diagnosis and you have symptoms, you need to be isolated in your home until those results come back," Hawkinson added. In his opinion, it's not the most efficient way to get tested once the shipping time and wait for results are factored into the equation. However, Hawkinson believes we may see more options like this in the future."The technology is out there. It is progressing quickly," he said. "Hopefully as time goes on we do get more access to people so there can be readily available testing with efficient and accurate test results."The Costco website says both test kits are eligible for flexible medical spending accounts.Although the CARES Act mandated that insurers cover COVID testing costs, Dr. Kent Sepkowitz, a CNN medical analyst, writes whether insurers "will pay fully for more bells and whistles program such as that provided by Costco likely will vary plan to plan."This story was first reported by Cat Reid at KSHB in Kansas City, Missouri. 2794
