LHASA, Aug. 15 (Xinhua) -- A senior official of the Communist Party of China (CPC) has urged greater efforts to implement democratic management in Tibetan Buddhist monasteries.Concerted and solid efforts must be paid to implement democratic management in Tibetan Buddhist monasteries, said the official, Du Qinglin, head of the United Front Work Department of the CPC Central Committee.Du, also vice chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, made the remarks during a conference on democratic management of Tibetan Buddhist monasteries which was held in Xigaze of Tibet Autonomous Region from Aug. 14 to 15.Competent Tibetan Buddhist monks and nuns who are politically reliable, extraordinarily learned and widely respected should be selected to monastery management committees through thorough democratic consultation, said he,In implementing monastery democratic management, the lawful rights of monasteries, orderly religious activities of monks and nuns, and normal religious practice of believers must be ensured, he added.The 11th Panchen Lama, Bainqen Erdini Qoigyijabu, who is also vice president of the Buddhist Association of China, sent a congratulatory letter to the conference.The conference was attended by some 150 people from Tibetan Buddhist circles and relative governmental organizations.

BEIJING, July 26 (Xinhua) -- Drenched riverside towns in central and southern parts of China on Monday prepared for even more flooding as water levels in the country's huge rivers surged and rainstorms continued.In its latest update, the State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters said floods this year had left 823 people dead and another 437 missing as of Monday morning.The direct economic loss had mounted to 154.1 billion yuan, more than double that of previous flood losses incurred in any single year since 2000.Premier Wen Jiabao has urged local authorities to fully prepare for more floods and related disasters.More than 370,000 soldiers and residents now have been mobilized to beef up the flood prevention efforts in eight provinces and municipalities along the country's major rivers, the flood control headquarters said.

WUXI, June 25 (Xinhua) -- Senior Communist Party of China (CPC) official Liu Yunshan Friday urged more efforts to expand the ranks of volunteers and optimize the system for volunteering.Liu, head of the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee, made the call in a letter of congratulations to a national seminar on volunteer work held in Wuxi city, east China's Jiangsu Province, Friday.A well-developed volunteer system could bring about a friendly social atmosphere and harmonious social relationships, the letter said.A statement released after the seminar, held jointly by the Publicity Department and the Civilization Office of the CPC Central Committee, said it was attended by officials from central ministries and civilization work offices of provinces and municipalities.It did not provide the names or the number of the participants.

  

BEIJING, July 13 (Xinhua) - The Chinese education ministry Tuesday ordered education authorities and schools in flood-hit regions to ensure the safety of students against floods and flood triggered disasters.The ministry ordered all necessary measures be taken to guarantee the safety of students, including suspending classes, rescheduling exams, relocating classrooms to safer areas, and other actions.Also, according to the ministry, school buildings in flood-hit regions could only be put back into use after examination and approval by authorities, so that no student is endangered by the possible collapse of flood-soaked school buildings.Rainstorms and the floods that followed left 107 people dead and 59 missing in ten provinces and municipalities -- mostly along the Yangtze River, as of Tuesday afternoon.The education ministry also cautioned against accidents involving students during their summer vacations, such as drowning while swimming and contracting food poisoning.
