Being a truck driver isn't the draw it used to be. At Excel Driver Services, they're grinding gears trying to figure out how to get more people behind the wheel of big rigs. “It's a big issue,” Excel owner Jason Emery said. “You've seen companies go out of business because they can't support growth because they can't get safe drivers to operate their equipment.” Emery says America has a major shortage of licensed truck drivers and the numbers support him. According to the American Trucking Associations, the industry was short more than 60,000 drivers in 2018 – that's almost a 20 percent increase from the year before. The ATA also reports a need to hire more than a million new drivers over the next decade to keep up with growing transportation demands. “There's a huge need for qualified truck drivers right now,” Emery said. “Every company in this town is looking for drivers right now.” Emery says the major reason for the decline is that many drivers are getting older and retiring. Now the industry is trying to attract younger drivers, people like Shelby Stennett – who is changing careers from a frack hand in the oil fields to a truck driver on the interstates. “As far as career-wise making that extra money and put that money in my pocket,” he said. “Being able to provide for myself and my family and my friends. It's important to me because I got to eat. I got to eat to survive.” According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the starting pay for a truck driver is ,000 per year. After a few years on the road, however, the ATA says drivers can easily make six figures driving an 18-wheeler. Despite the pay, this job isn't for everyone. Drivers can spend weeks on the road alone and sleep in their rigs. Now economists say fewer truck drivers on the road could end up costing you a lot more money. “For the last several years we've gotten used to free shipping and one-day shipping and give it to me right now,” said Christina Huber, Ph.D. a professor of economics at Metropolitan State University Denver. “Maybe that can't continue.” Huber says with more online shopping and fewer drivers to transport the goods, shipping costs could skyrocket. “If they're having trouble attracting drivers to the industry the only way to alleviate that shortage is to make it more attractive for them to enter,” she said. To attract more drivers, many companies are increasing pay. Excel is now using new technology train a new generation of drivers. “What we decided to do a couple years ago is to purchase a simulator company,” Emery said. “Now we're building our own system to change and evolve how we train drivers.”Evolving to get more drivers to live life on the open road and keep on truckin'. 2726
LINWOOD, Kan. – A former animal control officer is fighting with the City of Linwood, Kansas, for a family pet — a pet pot-bellied pig. His name is Dude and he's a 6-year-old Juliana pot-bellied pig. He's the newest member of Bailey Parker's menagerie at her home. He shares the yard with two ducks, four chickens, and occasionally the family's two dogs and cat. "I talk to them all like they're my children. Like, this is my family," Parker said. Dude even comes inside the house, too. Parker said he's more intelligent than her dogs, which the general public doesn't realize. Parker adopted him a few months ago from a goat farm, where he wasn't getting the specific care he needed. According to the City, Dude is livestock and not allowed inside city limits. "I would have never brought him in if I thought he was livestock or swine. A pot-bellied pig is not livestock," Parker said. She's asking the City to amend the ordinance or have the City issue her a special permit. The City refused a few months ago, but Parker and her attorneys returned to the city council meeting on Dec. 17. The City again denied the request and now Parker's attorneys, Tristen Woods and Lauren Kruskall, are taking the City to court in January. If they lose a bench trial, Woods said they will take it further to a jury trial in Leavenworth County. "At some point, we felt as a city we have to draw the line somewhere, otherwise you're going to start seeing people with horses and cows and sheep and everything else saying they're pets," said Brian Christenson, mayor of Linwood. Christenson said he's not against the pig, but laws are laws. The City recently amended the same animal control ordinance to allow pit bulls and chickens, of which Christenson said Parker has taken advantage. "The biggest problem we have, we don't have the resources, the animal control, all the things we would have to start adding these exotic animals," Christenson said. Not long after Parker adopted him, Dude got out of the yard and wandered to the park across the street because her kids accidentally left the fence open. Christenson said it took four people two hours to wrangle the pig, but Parker said it wasn't a big deal and she has since made provisions to prevent it from happening again. "We don't have animal control officers. We don't know what kind of medicines [pigs] have, what shots they're supposed to have," said Christenson. "It's just more work added that we'd have to do." Parker said Dude is well taken care of and isn't a nuisance. "If I have the means to give them something, I want to be able to help them and I don’t think I should be told what I can and can’t have in my backyard," said Parker. Parker has gathered around 50 signatures on a permit from people who support her request. Nearby DeSoto, Kansas, allows pot-bellied pigs as pets. Kansas City, Missouri, allows pot-bellied pigs, too. Bonner Springs doesn't have any language on the books about pot-bellied pigs, but the city council is taking up the topic at its next meeting on Jan. 13. Eudora and Olathe don't have language on pot-bellied pigs, either. It's the kind of situation nobody wants to be in: getting sick unexpectedly and left with a hefty hospital bill to pay. But it's a situation Jamesia Shutt is all too familiar with. Three years ago, Shutt got sick and went to the emergency room in the middle of the night. "They did some X-rays, some morphine, gave me an antibiotic and sent me home in like two hours maybe,” Shutt recalls of the visit. “You have pneumonia, go home." That two-hour visit to the ER turned out be quite expensive. "A couple weeks later, I don't know when, I get a bill for ,000," she says. It’s a sticker shock she didn't see coming. "My thought is well, I'm not a doctor or a medical person, so I’m trusting this cost, whatever they say it's going to cost," she says. It’s a problem that David Silverstein, the founder of the non-profit group Broken Healthcare, sees it all the time. "Imagine if you and I went to a restaurant and we sat down at the same table at the same time with the same waiter and we're given the same menu with different prices on it, how would that make you feel? Well, this happens in healthcare every day," Silverstein says. Silverstein has been fighting to make sure patients aren't hit with what are called “surprise bills.” "The number one thing is ask a lot of questions and don't get frustrated by the answers,” he says. “As a consumer, you have rights. If they say they don't know, say that's not good enough." Silverstein says ask questions to find out if anyone doing the procedure is out of your insurance network. This year, the White House started requiring hospitals to list prices online. The issue with that is those prices are listed without factoring in insurance, which complicates things even more. "It does not help 99 percent of the population, but it's a step in the right direction,” Silverstein says. “We need transparency from both the providers and the insurance carriers.” When the president held this meeting last month, both Silverstein and Shutt were by his side, because they know the problem firsthand. "To have the president ask what happened and why do you have this medical bill was pretty incredible," Shutt says. Three years later, Broken Healthcare's attorneys are fighting Shutt’s hospital bill. "It is a game and Americans need to learn the rules of the game, and they need to learn their rights and play the game to win until such time our government officials do the right thing and change the rules, so we don't have to play this sleazy game anymore," Silverstein says. 2540
Lending a helping hand is what Stephen Peth loves to do. Peth spends a lot of his time in the rehabilitation unit at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, helping wounded warriors get back on their feet. "The job is basically to do whatever we can to help the therapist," Peth explains. At 72 years old, Peth couldn't imagine any other way to spend his time. “I could be out on a golf course doing something for me, but to be here and be working for these wonderful service people that are here for a variety of reasons, to me, that’s inspirational,” he says. Peth says he’s inspired by all the patients he sees, because, he too, was once a warrior wounded in combat. "This is the boot that I was wearing the day that I got shot," he says. In 1967, 11 months into his tour during the Vietnam War, Peth, an army rescue helicopter pilot, was attacked by gunfire. "We took 39 hits on the aircraft,” he recalls. “I took a round through my boot and took a round though my arm." That dangerous mission earned him one of the highest awards of valor. "Gen. Craton Abrams came out and pinned a Silver Star on me," he says.His award and scars serve as reminders that he was once where these war heroes are now, compelling him find a way to serve his country once more. 1305
PARADISE, Calif. – Parts of California are going dark and some people are taking it personally. “It’s like a slap in the face,” said Paradise, California, resident Jonathan Valdez. “It’s like we have to keep suffering over and over again.” Valdez stocked up on gas for his generators after Pacific Gas and Electric warned it could shut off power to almost 200,000 people across the state in an attempt to lower the risks of wildfires. “Gas went up so I’m kind of sweating it a little bit,” Valdez said. “It’s another extra dollar for each can and we have to do this every day.” Several businesses say the power shutdowns have hurt their sales. “People can’t work, people can’t pay their bills,” said a worker at the local gas station. “And people up here in California, we live paycheck to paycheck.” The employee says the gas station lost products without electricity. She added many feel in the Northern California community that they’re being targeted by the power company. “A lot of people think they’re doing it to get back at the people of Paradise,” she said. Getting back because several people are now suing PG&E after investigations found their equipment started the Camp Fire – the most expensive and deadly wildfire in California history. Paul Moreno of PG&E says these planned power outages aren’t happening out of revenge – they are happening to keep cities and citizens safe. “No. No. There’s nothing like that. This is being done for public safety,” Moreno said. “Last time we did a public safety power shutoff, we found 100 cases of damage caused by high winds to our powerlines any number of those could have started a fire. With the high winds it could have been catastrophic.” These potentially catastrophic conditions have first responders on high alert. “It’s really flammable and fire is really dynamic,” said Rick Carhart of Cal Fire Butte County. Carhart says Cal Fire has increased staffing after issuing a Red Flag Warning – adding people need to take safety into their own hands. "You need to have 10 feet of an area around the generator down to bare dirt," he said. Having a plan in place, just like the local schools. After closing classes for three days during another power shutoff, Paradise Junior and High Schools aren’t taking any chances this time. Staff will use lanterns to light classes and plan on running generators to access the internet. “That may sound strange, but we ran a school out of a hardware store last year,” said Larry Johnson, Principal at Paradise Junior & Senior High School. “So, a couple of lanterns, you know, we got this.” Town officials, however, aren’t as optimistic. “There’s not a lot we can do about it,” said Paradise Mayor Jody Jones. “We don’t even have generators that the town has.” Jones isn’t pleased with PG&E. And after seeing much of her city go up in flames, she’s now calling them out – saying PG&E should have spent more money on maintenance. “I think there’s a lot of evidence that they haven’t been doing the maintenance that they need to do doing,” she said. “I wish that they would have invested in their system.” When the power did go out in Paradise, some had their own systems in place. Nicki Jones of Nic’s Food, Beer and Wine bought a generator to keep her business up and running. Saying it’s an investment for both her and her customers. “We’re able to serve the community,” she said. “We open up at 7 a.m. We serve coffee and we have a gathering place for the community.” Those looking to travel out of this community, however, may have a hard time. “Everything else is closed,” a local man said. “So, I’m going to have to get gas in Chico.” Back at the local gas station, people found the doors chained up and pumps shutdown. “It’s a big inconvenience going down to Chico,” the man said. “Everything in Magalia is closed and everything in Paradise is closed.” But despite the hardships, people are staying positive during these planned power shutoffs and seeing light in this time of darkness.“We’re Paradise strong,” Jody Jones said. “We’re pioneers. We can do it.” 4113
