La Bella Pizza Garden is one such mom and pop shop.10News anchor Kimberly Hunt stopped by this 1950s pizza parlor, now run by Tony Raso.“I used to roll pizza and make meatballs in the 70s”, says Raso.Raso proudly displays photos of his mother and father, who opened the restaurant almost 60 years ago.“That's his delivery vehicle in the 50s. They enjoy our classic pizza. It's never changed," said Raso. “We make meatballs, spaghetti, lasagna. They've been cooking all day.”La Bella Pizza Garden now has three generations of family history. Raso’s son Michael works alongside his father. He will eventually take over the business. He says their customers are family too. “When I'm working up front, they come in and say my grandparents came here, we come here, our kids come here, You can't stop that, you've got to keep it going," said Michael Raso. CHULA VISTA (KGTV) – Chula Vista police are investigating an overnight carjacking and kidnapping involving perpetrators disguised as law enforcement.The incident was reported just before midnight Tuesday in the Rancho Del Rey III neighborhood in East Chula Vista.Police said a group of men, armed with guns and wearing bullet proof vests, were driving in two white Ford Expedition SUV’s, which appeared to look like squad vehicles. Two people wearing vests with the word 'police' on the front ordered him to get out of his Renault Koleos SUV. Police said the victim believed the suspects had a gun. He got into one of their SUVs and was driven to Paseo Del Rey Park, located between Telegraph Canyon Road and East J Street. The suspects released the victim unharmed at the park, according to police.The victim walked 40 minutes to a residence on J Street to call 9-1-1, police said. He was not hurt in the incident, police said.The suspect vehicles and the stolen SUV are still outstanding, according to police. (KGTV) — Worried about having their young students continue to develop reading skills during distance learning, the Chula Vista Elementary School District has launched a new effort to get each students books they can have at home.“When you start reading at a later age, reading becomes a chore," said Dr. Lydia Burgos, Principal at Montgomery Elementary. "We want them to become lovers of books.”CVESD schools are working to find sources of reading level-appropriate books. They have developed partnerships with civic organizations, such as Lions and Rotary Clubs, as well as getting donations from UC San Diego. Some teachers are soliciting cash donations online to purchase books. “We begged, borrowed, and stolen from anywhere that we can in order to have the different levels we need so that all of our students have multiple books in their book bag," said Harborside Elementary Principal Lisa Forehand.Once the books are obtained, they are divided into packets that families can pick up during set distribution times. 1050

(KGTV) - Loved ones are mourning the death from COVID-19 of a retired CHP officer and beloved grandfather.Raul Martinez first started feeling sick in late August."Really tired and a fever," said Claudia Martinez.He tested positive for coronavirus and got sicker and sicker."He started complaining about having trouble breathing and he wouldn't eat," said Martinez.A few weeks after his first symptoms, his family brought him to the ER, where he was admitted.Raul, a diabetic, received various treatments, including Remdesivir, but late last month, he was placed on a ventilator."Super scared and panicked," said Martinez.Less than 24 hours later, Raul Martinez, a retired CHP officer, died at the age of 70."It was just shock and more pain than I can describe," said Martinez.Claudia says the father of four and grandfather of nine retired from the CHP a decade ago, after three decades on the job."He took pride definitely in servicing his community. He took pride in being a just person," said Martinez.He was also a careful person. During the pandemic, he and his wife were taking all the precautions."They were staying home a lot, wearing masks," said Martinez.She has no idea where he contracted the virus. CHULA VISTA (KGTV) -- The City of Chula Vista is asking for the public’s help identifying those responsible for vandalizing several city parks.On November 10, Rohr Park and Terra Nova Park were damaged by vandals driving vehicles on the park grounds and soccer fields.RELATED: Chula Vista's Discovery Park damaged by vandals driving on turfThe city says this is the second time in a month parks have been vandalized.
