SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Jo Anne Bilodeau finds peace inside the grounds of her serene San Carlos apartment complex, filled with greenery, benches, a clubhouse and a pool.Even her rent is less than ,100 a month. "It kind of feels like a sanctuary," she says. But Bilodeau's days in San Diego could be numbered, all because of a specialty shot she takes every 12 weeks. "It makes you feel like you're in limbo all the time because you don't know the exact cost of the drug until you get a bill."Bilodeau suffers from Rheumatoid Arthritis, an autoimmune disease that causes the body to mistakenly attack the joints. She's about to turn 71 and on medical leave from her job, meaning her company health benefits are expiring. That leaves her with just Medicare, and what she believes will be a ,300 co-insurance payment on the drug."I have my days," she says. "I have meltdowns where I just cry because I'm worried and scared."Bilodeau isn't the only one with that anxiety.A new study by AARP says the price for specialty prescription drugs, ones that are generally infused or injected, rose 7 percent in 2017. That's more than three times the rate of inflation. The average annual cost for these drugs is nearly ,000. RELATED: Making It in San Diego: How to save money on your prescriptions"The prices for those medications has risen dramatically," said Leslie Ritter, a senior director at the National Multiple Sclerosis society, a condition that also requires specialty drugs.Ritter says patients on the medications have skipped doses and racked up credit card debt. "Medications only work if you're adhering to them, and you're taking them as prescribed," she says. Federal and State governments are now moving legislation to help lower prices and increase transparency. In the meantime, Leigh Purvis, of the AARP Public Policy Institute, said the best thing to do is for patients to talk to their health care providers to see if there is a less expensive generic alternative to treat the same condition.Drug manufacturers themselves also offer patient assistance programs to those who are eligible. However, they are only available to privately and commercially insured patients, not those on Medicare. 2338

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Mission Beach residents and tourists could be getting some relief from dockless scooters speeding down the boardwalk as San Diego's summer season approaches.The Mayor's Office is working on an emergency ordinance banning electric scooters, like those used from services such as LimeBike or Bird, from the Mission Beach Boardwalk, from Crystal Pier south to the jetty."Residents have complained about [the] continued reckless use of motorized (electric) scooters along the Mission Beach Boardwalk. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Mayor Kevin Faulconer has directed city staff to reinstate San Diego Fire-Rescue Department’s Girls Empowerment Camp that was abruptly canceled last week.The event was canceled one day after attorney Al Reva sent a letter to the city’s attorney and organizers of the event.The letter claims that Reva’s client Rich Allison was “deterred and prevented from timely enrolling his son in this camp because boys were not invited to attend, based solely on their sex.”RELATED: Girls empowerment camp rescheduled after abrupt cancellation?Families who previously registered for the canceled camp will have first choice of which of the two weekends the camp is being offered they would like to participate in.“Our firefighters, staff and volunteers put their hearts and souls into this event,” said Fire Chief Brian Fennessy. “We are committed to moving forward with this excellent opportunity for young people. Last year, we heard that the Girls Empowerment Camp was a priceless experience for the campers. We want the same for our 2018 participants.”The Girls Empowerment Camp is a free two-day camp for youth ages 14-18 “regardless of age or gender.”The camp introduces participants to career opportunities in firefighting and encourages them to consider public safety as a career option.“We made a commitment to hundreds of kids and their families and we are going to stand by that,” Mayor Faulconer said. “This is an important camp that teaches kids what it’s like to be a firefighter and exposes many of them to a career opportunity they may not have considered previously.
