SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A power outage affected thousands San Diego Gas & Electric customers in the Ocean Beach area and SeaWorld late Friday.The outage was reported just before 4 p.m. It wasn't immediately clear what led to the outage.SeaWorld said the power outage was short lived and only affected the central and west areas of the theme park. No guests were trapped on any rides or injured and all animals were okay, according to the park.UPDATED TRAFFIC CONDITIONSThe outage also hit a portion of San Diego International Airport. Officials say power has since been restored but had affected Terminal 2 and the Rental Car Center.In total, about 15,000 customers have been affected, according to the power company. Crews were able to restore all power as of 5:40 p.m., according to SDG&E. 822

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A North County school district is fighting off potential threats with cutting-edge technology.On Thursday the school board approved plans to install an electronic access control system on its campus by the 2019-2020 school year. Funding for the 4,000 project will come out of the district's capital facilities fund. The system will provide global lockdown capability through panic buttons, card readers, computer, or mobile device.LED lights will notify teachers if their classroom door is locked, they can also lock them manually or with a key card. Teachers can also unlock the doors from the inside if they need to let a student in.Jeff Kaye, President and CEO of School Safety Operations, assesses how secure schools are and offers recommendations.He commended Rancho Santa Fe for a high baseline for emergency preparedness, but says it can always be improved. “What we see with locks at all schools is the inability to lock a door from inside of classroom without the use of keys. It makes sense because most of these schools were designed before we had this type of threat. Locks were meant to secure the school after school, not to keep something bad out during school," said Kaye.Kaye says during the Parkland, Florida shooting someone was killed opening the door to try and secure the classroom. He recommends all schools invest in electronic locks in some capacity.“Money is a tough commodity in education safety, especially in California. So when we have someone trying to sell Kevlar doors or Kevlar safe rooms or Kevlar backpacks and the school doesn't have doors that can lock, we say it's like building your swimming pool before building your house," said Kaye. He says there are more affordable options for larger school districts. “That’s where we need to go in education safety, proactive rather than reactive," Kaye.The International School Safety Institute Conference will be held in San Diego at the end of September. 1969

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A growing group in San Diego is flipping the script on those who fight dense development in their own backyards.They're calling themselves the 'YIMBY' Democrats. YIMBY for "yes in my backyard." Their solution is for more dense development in urban areas where people can live and work. They also seek legislative reform and developments that help combat climate change."It's basic supply and demand," said member Dike Anyiwo. "The more sort of inventory that we're able to produce and build and create, then it stands to reason that prices should go down."RELATED: MISD: Granny flat permits soarTheir ideas appear to be gaining traction. The city recently passed Mayor Kevin Faulconer's plan eliminating parking requirements near transit centers. And the YIMBYs are getting visits from some key politicians, including Assemblyman Todd Gloria, City Councilmembers Monica Montgomery and Chris Ward, and County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher. Plus, some of its members are now landing spots on city planning groups. Anyiwo is now on the Midway Pacific Highway Community Planning Group. Still, concerns remain that the YIMBY plans could lead to too much crowding for the city's infrastructure. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A new report out Wednesday shows that San Diegans are keeping some vehicles for more than 15 years. The report, published by iSeeCars, lists the Toyota Tundra as the vehicle most likely to be kept by drivers for 15 years or more in San Diego. According to the report, more than 32 percent of San Diegans who own a Tundra keep it for that length of time. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A powerful new public service campaign called "End Family Fire" launched Wednesday by the Brady Center for Gun Violence Prevention aims to promote awareness for gun safety in the home. The center says eight children are hurt or killed in a firearm accident every single day in the United States. Carol Landale with the Brady Center says the goal of the campaign is to show people that something can be done. According to the center, more than four and a half million children live in homes with loaded and unlocked guns, and three in four know where the guns in their home are stored.The term, “Family Fire” was developed specifically for this campaign and refers to a shooting involving an improperly stored or misused gun found in the home that results in death or injury.The Brady Center’s goal is to introduce “Family Fire” into the vocabulary of the American public, much like "Designate a Driver" and "Secondhand Smoke Kills" became powerful and effective slogans for their respective causes.  1071
