Heavy snowfall hammering parts of New England and a lingering storm on the West Coast have left thousands of travelers in limbo. About 50 million remained on winter weather alerts, CNN meteorologist Rob Shackelford said.As of Monday morning, more than 7,500 flights have been delayed into or out of the US within the past day and more than 900 flights have been canceled."When we came here to take Delta to Nashville, it got canceled," Cameron Barry, a traveler flying through Boston, told CNN affiliate 516

Forecasters may not be expecting a severe hurricane season this year, but a few major storms could still threaten the Atlantic coast. The Atlantic hurricane season officially kicks off Saturday -- even after Subtropical Storm Andrea briefly spun up near Bermuda last week -- and will run through November 30.The nation's top hurricane forecasters have predicted a near-normal season with "a lot" of storms. Nine to 15 named storms, including four to eight hurricanes, could form in the Atlantic. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, or NOAA, said the season won't likely be as violent as last year's above-average season when hurricanes Florence and Michael slammed the United States, killing nearly 100 people and causing billions of dollars in damage. But they are warning that two to four hurricanes could still grow to Category 3 or stronger. Those storms carry winds of 111 to 129 mph."That's still a lot of activity," said Gerry Bell, NOAA's lead hurricane forecaster. "We are expecting a near-normal season but regardless, that's a lot of activity and you still need to prepare for the hurricane season now."Would a hurricane hit the US?While the forecast does not specifically predict where those storms might strike, weather officials are urging all US coastal residents to prepare for a tropical storm or hurricane, because the past two years have been devastating. In 2017, Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria put a dramatic end to a 12-year period with no major hurricane landfalls in the United States and ranked among the costliest hurricanes in history.Millions of people in Texas, Louisiana, southwest Florida, North Carolina and Puerto Rico are still reeling from the trio of hurricanes.A fourth storm, Hurricane Nate, also made US landfall, but never reached major hurricane level.Last year, Florence arrived during the season's peak to pummel the Carolinas. Then, Hurricane Michael slammed the Florida Panhandle with frightening fury and later socked Virginia, the Carolinas and Georgia.El Ni?o could lead to fewer stormsEl Ni?o, the periodic weather event characterized by warming ocean temperatures, tends to weaken hurricanes but that could change if the weather is warmer.Neil Jacobs, the acting NOAA administrator, said warmer-than-average sea-surface temperatures in the tropical Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea, as well as enhanced storm activity moving off West Africa, would favor increased activity.El Ni?o could also weaken quicker than anticipated, creating conditions that would be more favorable for storm development by peak season in September. The opposite is also true: If El Ni?o strengthens more than anticipated, it could keep tropical storm activity on the lower end of NOAA's range.Weather officials say El Ni?o has a 55% to 60% chance of continuing through the fall.Hurricane ready? Supplies are tax-free in FloridaFloridians are getting a little help from authorities to build their own hurricane emergency kit.Residents can buy emergency supplies free of sales taxes from May 31 until June 6. The discount includes ice packs, batteries, flashlights, coolers and items worth up to 0, such as portable generators."While living in and visiting Florida offers many benefits and advantages, it is important to keep the potential for severe weather hazards and threats in mind," said Jim Zingale, executive director of the Florida Department of Revenue. The holiday tax was passed by Florida lawmakers and signed into law by Gov. Ron DeSantis in May.A storm formed early -- againFor the past five years, a winter hurricane and a series of tropical storms have formed before the official start of the Atlantic hurricane season. Subtropical Storm Andrea continued that trend in May.The short-lived storm made this the fifth consecutive year that a named storm has formed before the season's official start.Hurricane Alex, an unusual winter hurricane, formed in January 2016 in the northeastern Atlantic Ocean.Meantime, April saw the advent of Tropical Storm Arlene in 2017, while May ushered in Tropical Storm Ana in 2015 and Tropical Storm Alberto in 2018.The recent rise in off-season storms has raised questions about the impact of climate change and whether the time frame should begin sooner. But weather officials have said they would need more evidence of a considerable change before making a final decision. In the past 12 years, there have been at least six named storms right before hurricane season officially started -- during the second half of May -- but in the 31 years before that, there was "a lack of any such activity" in the same time frame, said Dennis Feltgen, a meteorologist and spokesman with the National Hurricane Center. 4708

Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg and Sheryl Sandberg will not attend a hearing in Ottawa on Tuesday, despite receiving summonses from the Canadian parliament, Facebook confirmed on Monday. The decision could result in the executives being held in contempt of parliament, the senior Canadian politician who sent the summons told CNN.Both executives received formal requests from the Canadian Parliament earlier this month tied to a gathering of an international committee examining Silicon Valley's impact on privacy and democracy. Zuckerberg and Sandberg have testified before the United States Congress on the subject. On Monday night, Bob Zimmer MP, the chair of the committee, said that Facebook had not told the committee whether its two most senior executives would be attending. He said committee members learned on CNN that Zuckerberg and Sandberg would not testify.A Facebook spokesperson disputed that on Tuesday morning, saying the company had told the committee it would be sending Kevin Chan, its head of public policy for Facebook Canada, and Neil Potts, its director of public policy, to the meeting. The spokesperson added the company had been in ongoing communication with the committee.Lawmakers from at least ten countries, including the United Kingdom and Australia, are expected to attend the meeting, which is the second of its kind. The first meeting of the committee last year in London resulted in the release of 1441

Four people will face prosecution over the downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17, five years after the plane crashed in eastern Ukraine killing 298 people, international investigators said Wednesday. The Joint Investigation Team (JIT) said it would issue national and international arrest warrants Wednesday for the four suspects. Three Russians, Igor Girkin, Sergey Dubinskiy and Oleg Pulatov, were named, along with Ukrainian Leonid Kharchenko.According to investigators, Girkin is a former colonel of Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB), Dubinskiy was employed by Russia's military intelligence agency GRU and Pulatov was a former soldier of the Russian special forces, Spetsnaz-GRU.Ukraine's Kharchenko had no military background, but is believed to have led a combat unit in Donetsk in July 2014.Investigators said they would not ask for the suspects to be extradited because the Russian and Ukrainian constitution prohibits extraditing nationals. They added that they would ask Russia to cooperate with the investigation, and both countries to question the suspects about the charges.Flight MH17 was shot out of the sky over territory held by pro-Russian separatists as it flew from Amsterdam to the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur in July 2014. The 298 who died came from 17 countries.According to Dutch prosecutor Fred Westerbeke, the suspects are not accused of firing the missile, but are "just as punishable as the person who committed the crime," Westerbeke said.He added that they are suspected of obtaining the Buk missile "with the goal to shoot the plane."According to the JIT -- which is made up of five countries: Australia, Belgium, Malaysia, the Netherlands and Ukraine -- MH17 was downed by a Buk.Investigators announced in 2018 that the flight had been brought down by a missile fired from a launcher belonging to Russia's 53rd anti-aircraft missile brigade. Russia has repeatedly denied involvement in the incident, suggesting instead that Ukrainian forces shot down the plane.Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said there was "nothing to discuss," in a conference call with reporters on Wednesday, ahead of the news conference."You know our attitude to this investigation. Russia had no opportunity to take part in it (the JIT). Though from the very start, from the very first days of this tragedy, Russia showed initiative, was actively trying to become a part of this investigation into this horrific disaster," Peskov added. 2465

GLENDALE, Ariz. — Arizona police say a WWII veteran who was escorted to see his family in Florida by a sergeant has died.Earlier this month, KNXV reported on 94-year-old Howard Benson, a Glendale, Arizona resident who wanted to drive himself to Florida, all by himself, to be closer to family. His family called the Glendale Police Department, asking them to persuade Howard from going alone. But the WWII veteran was determined to go on one final mission. With his own time and his own money, Sgt. Jeff Turney, who is also a veteran, drove all the way to Florida with his new co-pilot, Benson.Earlier this month, KNXV 629
