Camp Kangaroo is designed for students, inspiring and elevating children out of grief and propelling them forward.One of the campers is a sixth-grader, named Gunnar. He lost his father in 2015."He was going to his NA meeting, he was always going to help other people even though my dad hadn't drank or smoked for two years," he said on his way home, his father crashed head on with a school bus.Gunnar then moved in with his mom, who turned to drugs after his brother died in 2011."My mom didn't really care about me and I feel like she didn't love me. So my dad, he tried his best to take care of me. Once I lost him, he was my whole world, so that was like losing my whole world," Gunnar said.Gunnar fell into an unsafe life, feeling lost and unloved. He said he became ill, unable to speak, and his mom wouldn't take him to the hospital, saying he "was faking it." He said his sister nursed him back to health and credits her for him being here today.A therapist gave him a permanent way out."She told me about Camp Kangaroo and at first I didn't want to go but then she told me about all the activities here all the ways you can learn how to not grieve and I was like okay I'll give it a try. I came here and it was amazing, it was one of the best decisions of my life," he said.His sister said camp gave him his own voice and the courage to tell their mom he was moving out. "When he got back from camp he was able to say for the first time, 'I don't want to be with you, I want to be with them.' He was strong enough to do that because of this camp," sister Jaqueline Avila-Barajas said.This year 70 kids ages 5-17 attended Camp Kangaroo in Julian for free. Corporate sponsors and personal donations fund the camp. They have creative arts-based therapy, with music and sessions. Each child lost someone close to them, and had an in-home assessment before coming to camp to ensure the safety of every kid."They learn that death is a natural part of life, and they're not alone," National Director, Ryana Goldberger, said she hopes each child learns "they're stronger than they know, and put coping skills in their tool box so they can help others."Gunnar echoed these words, "don't ever think it's your fault, it's not, you couldn't have done a single thing to change that and don't ever give up hope. Your loved one would be proud of you right now no matter what situation you're in."The camp is 3-days long, and costs about 0 per child. Other nonprofits like Project Linus help make the kids feel at home while bunking in the mountains, providing things like blankets and t-shirts. The camp brings together children from San Diego, Orange County, San Bernardino and Los Angeles. Camp Kangaroo started in Chicago, and is a nationwide program, according to Goldberger. 2889

CAPE CORAL, Fla. - It all started with a high school assignment.Megan O’Grady says she had to write about a topic that she felt passionate about in her life.As the daughter of a law enforcement officer who had recently learned of the deaths of five officers during a 2016 protest in Dallas, it wasn’t hard for her to share what she was feeling at the time.That paper would soon turn into a passion project and the nonprofit, Blue Line Bears.Four years later, the group has dispersed more than 700 teddy bears - sewn with the uniforms of fallen law enforcement officers and given to loved ones that have been left behind.“Taking that uniform shirt and making it into something that can be held and cuddled...it gives them comfort and a little bit of their loved one back,” the 18-year-old tells FOX 4.She says prior to this year, Blue Line Bears filled five to ten requests per week from agencies across the country.“Now, it can be up to like 20 or 30”.Megan’s father is Master Sergeant Patrick O’Grady with the Cape Coral Police Department.He says agencies from all over reach out to the group for bears.O’Grady says they also use the website Officer Down Memorial Page to keep track of impacted families.According to the site, there was 148 line of duty deaths in 2019.This year and at the time of this story, the website reports that the number is already 247.The site says most of those deaths are related to COVID-19 and gunfire.“At any time, we can have over 100 shirts waiting to be turned into bears,” O’Grady says.With an increase in demand comes the need for an increase in space.That’s why the nonprofit is now expanding to an official location in Cape Coral.Megan says the new space will serve as a place to hold meetings and a go-to location for the community to purchases merchandise.She says she's most excited that it will also provide a bigger workspace to prepare the keepsakes that bring support to many families.Because as Megan, now in her first year of college, says, “There’s always a lot of bears to be made.”The O'Gradys say the new location will be complete by the end of the year.The address for the new storefront is 3032 Santa Barbara Boulevard.Click here for more information about Blue Line Bears.This story was first reported by Shari Armstrong at WFTX in Fort Myers, Florida. 2315

CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV -- It's an historic gem in Carlsbad. Some of Hollywood's biggest stars of the 1930's would gather for a here for a relaxing get away from Los Angeles. A vacation home to Leo Carrillo from the TV show "The Cisco Kid." Once a massive ranch, now transformed into an 1800 acre city park in Carlsbad. Mick Calarco, Project Manager with the City of Carlsad calls the park a "manifestation of Carrillo's childhood dreams." Million- dollar homes now surround the park, but it was once a sprawling and working ranch with livestock and wild animals. Peacocks still roam the property, original descendants of the birds Carrillo bought for the ranch."You can truly lose yourself out here," said Calarco. The old adobe buildings have been beautifully restored to their original splendor. Carrillo bought the property in 1937. His famous friends, including Clark Gable would often visit the ranch. In every building you can see Carrillo's vision for preserving early ranch architecture. Adobe was a central theme in Leo's remembrance of of his childhood ranches. After Carrillo's daughter, Tony, left the estate, the buildings began to fall apart. The City of Carlsbad acquired the remaining 10.5-acre ranch in 1977. (KGTV) — U.S. history from the Mayflower through the American Revolution is on display in Carlsbad.The Green Dragon Tavern and Museum, off Interstate 5 at Palomar Airport Road, offers a full-service restaurant and a chance to look at original documents from the country's Colonial Period."Not a lot of families have the money or time or resources to be able to travel back east and experience these things first hand," says Green Dragon General Manager John Lek. "A lot of our guests say they feel like they're in Boston or New England without having to leave San Diego."The museum's artifacts are all part of a private collection owned by a local man, who asked not to be identified. He wanted to share his collection with the rest of San Diego, and put them on display at the restaurant.Among the items are documents signed by 14 of America's founding fathers. That gives visitors a chance to see the signatures of Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Samuel Adams, John Hancock and more.Lek says just seeing these items can give people a deeper link to their past."There is something authentic and something that really settles in when you have a direct connection with our forefathers," says Lek.The museum has been open for five years. Right now, everything fits within a single room. But there are plans for expansion.Lek says the museum will open a second room with more interactive and hands-on technology, as well as more artifacts from America's past.Admission to the museum is free, and it's open anytime the restaurant is open. CHICAGO (AP) — Tony La Russa, the Hall of Famer who won a World Series championship with the Oakland Athletics and two more with the St. Louis Cardinals, is returning to manage the Chicago White Sox 34 years after they fired him. “While I have had other inquiries about managing since retiring, this opportunity with the White Sox brings together a number of important factors that make this the right time and the right place,” La Russa said in a press release. “The on-field talent is amazing, and the front office, led by Kenny Williams and Rick Hahn, has done everything necessary to create an atmosphere of long-term success. All of those factors aligned to make this a tremendous opportunity, and I am excited to get going as soon as possible by building a coaching staff and getting to work.”The 76-year-old La Russa rejoins the franchise where his managing career began more than four decades ago. “We are extremely excited about the future of this team,” said Rick Hahn, White Sox general manager/senior vice president in the press release. “As we showed in 2020, this is a young, talented club that we expect to only grow better and better in the coming years.
