Just about anything with a wireless connection could be a target for hackers to attack, including personal computers, tablets and even baby monitors. But what about medical devices?The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is monitoring that, too.Cardiologist Cynthia Tracy, with George Washington University Medical Center, implants pacemakers into people’s bodies almost daily.“In a typical situation, there might be two electrodes that pass through these veins and into the heart,” Tracy explains of the device.The device, which is about the size of silver dollar, controls a patient's heart beat and sends data to doctors by using the internet."They have a Bluetooth connection somehow that allows the device to communicate with something external," Dr. Tracy says.That wireless connection is where the concern comes in.“There's no such thing as a medical device without vulnerabilities,” says Suzanne Scwarts, who leads medical device cyber security for the FDA.Shwarts says after a series of security problems discovered in various medical devices, cyber security is front and center.“We want patients to definitely be able to understand what are current risks today,” Shwarts says.Dr. Tracy explains while security shortcomings may be there, an actual hack to something like a pacemaker would be a bit difficult.“I couldn't from here reprogram someone that's out there in the lobby, Dr. Tracy says."They would have to be fairly close in order for me to do anything to their device."Though there have been no direct hacks to patients to date, the threat is there, which is why the FDA is ramping up its efforts to make sure the hacking of medical devices doesn't become reality. 1689

LA JOLLA (CNS) - Two passengers riding in a speeding car died today when the vehicle hit a palm tree on Girard Avenue, police said.The crash happened at 3:16 a.m. when the driver of a Nissan Altima was speeding westbound on 1000 Torrey Pines Road, said Officer Dino Delimitros of the San Diego Police Department.The 26-year-old man driving the Altima made a left turn onto 7500 Girard Ave., lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a palm tree, the officer said.Two male passengers, ages 19 and 21, received major injuries and died at the scene, Delimitros said.The injured driver was taken to a hospital and will be held on suspicion of driving under the influence, the officer said. 696

Just before noon Saturday, a team of volunteer rescued climbers with Portland Mountain Rescue made contact with a 35-year-old injured climber who fell several hundred feet near Hogsback Ridge.Rescuers verified that the climber was in serious but stable condition. (AP) — All it took for one fugitive in Illinois to turn himself in was a little photo manipulation.WBBM-TV in Chicago reports that the Kankakee County Sheriff's Department posts notices about fugitives on its Facebook page each Wednesday.This week, the department posted a picture of Brandon W. Conti. The 25-year-old was wanted for failure to appear on a drunken-driving charge.Conti commented on the post and asked, "Where's my costume?"Sheriff's office staff then edited the photo to add a sailor suit and a hat that read, "Ahoy."An officer wrote, "We held up our end of the bargain."Conti replied with laughing emojis, noting he would turn himself in "before noon" and asked that police "have the paperwork done and ready." KENOSHA, Wis. — A man was air-flighted to a local hospital after he was shot by a Kenosha police officer Sunday evening, police say.Kenosha police said the man was shot near a home at 40th and 28th streets in Kenosha just after 5 p.m. Officers were called to a 'domestic incident' at the location.A family member confirmed to Scripps station WTMJ in Milwaukee that the man was Jacob Blake, 29.Police did not say what led up to the shooting but said that officers offered immediate aid.Kenosha police said Blake is in serious condition.
