SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Kaiser Permamente employees in San Diego voted to join a nationwide strike against the healthcare giant starting Oct. 14. More than 4,000 members of OPEIU Local 30 supported the action, a union spokesperson said. Workers say they want to “protect middle-class jobs with wages and benefits that can support families.” Hundreds of positions would be affected, including x-ray, pharmacy, and surgical technicians, phlebotomists, optometrists, and housekeepers. “We believe the only way to ensure our patients get the best care is to take this step,” said Robert Sparrow, an x-ray technician. “Our goal is to get Kaiser to stop committing unfair labor practices and get back on track as the best place to work and get care. There is no reason for Kaiser to let a strike happen when it has the resources to invest in patients, communities and workers.” Picket lines will be established at Kaiser Permanente hospitals, medical office buildings, and other facilities in six states and Washington, D.C. Kaiser Permanente Chairman and CEO Bernard J. Tyson issued a statement which reads: “While the Kaiser Permanente management team was actively engaged in negotiations at the bargaining table, SEIU-UHW released a strike announcement on 9/16 – an overt effort to gain leverage in bargaining. “This has been an ongoing pattern during this entire process with SEIU-UHW, as they believe that an aggressive approach such as using negative corporate campaigning and threats of strike is the way to get a better offer than what our other unions have received. “We are in this situation because of the aggressive approach of SEIU-UHW leadership, but our approach remains the same: we are committed to offering a package that’s aligned with all of our other unions that keeps our employees among the best paid in wages and benefits in the industry. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Less than two weeks before Halloween, people across the county are getting creative and building candy chutes in hopes of a safer version of door-to-door trick-or-treating.In the yard of the Witthoft home in Lakeside, a large display stands in testament to a four-decade old family tradition of Halloween fright."We love Halloween. It's a fun holiday, a scary holiday. Seeing people dressed up. It's a lot of fun," said Chris Witthoft.Witthoft says part of that fun is handing out candy. That tradition, like so many things this year, is wrapped in uncertainty because of the pandemic."We've done it for so long. Just don't want to let the kids down," said Witthoft.So Witthoft and her family decided to build their own solution: two candy chutes created from PVC pipes and then painted. Witthoft and other family members will push the candy down the chute, staying six feet from the kids."All of us will have gloves and masks on, with social distancing circles along our fence," said Witthoft.Witthoft says the line to get to the candy will be socially distanced, while the chute and nearby areas will be constantly wiped down.To the west, in Rolando Village, Amberosia Vivar has designs on her own candy slide."Will make it out of PVC pipe ... It brings a little excitement for families stuck inside for months. I know my kids have been looking forward to Halloween for months," said Vivar.Across social media, ABC 10news has seen countless examples of San Diegans creating similar candy chutes, but is it safe? County guidelines recommend against any door-to-door trick-or-treating, a chief concern is kids congregating to get the candy. That 'congregating' is also a potential issue with the candy chutes. It's something the Witthofts and Vivar say they'll be watching out for."We can remind the kids, remind the families, maintain your distance," said Vivar."We want to be as safe as possible but still want to carry on our tradition for the kids," said Witthoft. 1995

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- It's a problem on the rise in communities across San Diego; drivers racing down side streets to avoid rush hour traffic. When Doug Doyen saw speeding on his street, he tried to stop it. "It was almost like the Indy 500 I couldn't believe the speed, the amount of traffic and speed up and down this street," said Doyen.He put up his own signs to get drivers to slow down. "Hold the sign out, wave at them, people would be like, 'what the? Oh okay."' said Doyen. "And they'd look at me like, 'who is this guy?'" But the speeding is still a problem. He thinks GPS apps are directing drivers to his side street to avoid freeway traffic. "I couldn't believe the traffic and the speeds I was seeing out here," he said. Neighbors joined San Diego Police to form a Pace Car Program. The citizen-based campaign adds more signs and traffic patrols in the neighborhood.  937

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — It's been 25 years since President Bill Clinton approved Operation Gatekeeper, the measure focused on the issue of immigrants crossing the border illegally — specifically the San Diego sector.Two key parts of Operation Gatekeeper were surveillance equipment and enforcement infrastructure, like walls and fences. Twenty-five years later, Border Patrol Agent Theron Francisco tells 10News, "Before Gatekeeper this area was in utter chaos, agents were apprehending 1,000 per shift. We had hundred of thousands of apprehensions a year." It's a measure that Francisco says paved the way for Border Patrol today."It's absolutely night and day from where we were back then," Francisco said.Tuesday, those against Operation Gatekeeper held a rally. Former Border Patrol agent Jenn Budd tells 10News, "That was the whole purpose, to push them out here to make it more difficult and dangerous for them to cross. I didn't want to be a part of it but its something I have to admit I was a part of."Budd tells 10News, it's partly why she left Border Patrol, "I left because I felt the policies we were enacting were killing people and what we were representing to the public wasn't the truth." Meantime, Border Patrol agents say it's only helped increase San Diego safety."The days are gone where illegal aliens are running through people's backyards trying to hide from Border Patrol," Francisco added. Budd says, "We need them to work for us, we need them to protect our borders we need them to keep drug smugglers out, but we don't need children dying in their custody and all sorts of things they're doing right now." 1637
