A small business in Brooklyn is taking on Congress, lobbying for insurance coverage for future pandemics. While not an easy battle, the National Retail Federation says these conversations have to be had now in order to keep retailers open.Ann Cantrell, speaking in front of the US House Financial Services Committee, said, "The past few months have been the darkest of my life.”The owner of "Annie's Blue Ribbon General Store" in Brooklyn said it's time for real solutions."Insurance companies should not be in the practice of denying policy holders coverage when they need it the most. What happened to 'you're in good hands' or 'like a good neighbor,' Cantrell said.Speaking on behalf of the National Retail Federation, Cantrell pleaded her case, saying, "We are a community store and people look to us as a pillar of light and hope in the neighborhood. Kids meet their friends at the shop to pick out a gift for their teacher, parents bribe their kids with a treat if they get a shot at the doctor or reward them if they get a good report card."The pandemic, she said, nearly shut her business down. She said she pays ,000 a year for what she calls "all risk" insurance. She was under the impression there was no risk that wouldn't be covered.“When we (were) closed by the governor (New York’s Andrew Cuomo), literally the government shut us down,” Cantrell said. “I put in another call, each time saying that viruses were not covered under business interruption insurance.”The National Retail Federation said Cantrell is a voice for retailers everywhere. And while it was able to get a hearing, the organization says many insurance companies aren't on board.“What they’re saying is this will not be isolated to one area, this seems to be unending and keeps going on and on and on so they’re afraid it’ll cost trillions of dollars,” said Leon Buck, the National Retail Federation’s vice president of banking and financial services. “But what we’re saying is we don’t think so. We think if we’re paying into the fund and the federal government has money, the insurance companies will be fine."“If we were in a COVID-21, for instance, if this happened again, maybe another virus, the business would be protected,” Buck added. “They’d file a claim with their insurance carrier whom they pay monthly premiums to and the federal government would help pick up the tab.”As for Cantrell, who has loved general stores since she was a kid, this is about speaking up because someone has to.“It's not just small companies like mine, it’s big companies. No one is covered under business interruption insurance,” Cantrell said.Luckily, she said she built a good website and the holidays and her Paycheck Protection Program loan will carry her through. A volunteer in the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine trial in Brazil has reportedly died.According to Bloomberg, the participant hadn't received the company's vaccine, but it's unclear how they died.Brazilian outlet Globo reported that the volunteer was a 28-year-old doctor from Rio de Janeiro who'd been working as a COVID-19 frontline worker.Reuters reported that Anvisa, Brazil's National Health Surveillance Agency, said the trial would continue but did not provide any further details.Following the news, AstraZeneca shares dropped about 1%, CNBC reported.AstraZeneca's trial has been on hold since Sept. 8, after an unexplained illness popped up in a patient in the United Kingdom.According to Reuters, AstraZeneca plans to resume its trial sometime this week. 770

A police officer who claimed she killed a Dallas man in his own apartment in the mistaken belief that he was in her home has been indicted on a charge of manslaughterThe indictment of Amber Guyger comes more than two months after she was arrested in the shooting death of Botham Shem Jean at the Dallas apartment complex where both lived -- a killing that sparked days of protests.Guyger, who was arrested and fired from her job as a Dallas police officer after the September shooting, initially faced a charge of manslaughter. But Dallas County District Attorney Faith Johnson had said a grand jury could issue a stiffer charge.A charge of manslaughter carries a sentence of up to 20 years in prison.Botham Jean's family had wanted Guyger to be indicted for murder, their attorney Daryl Washington told CNN.Guyger, who is white, was off-duty when she encountered Jean, an 26-year-old unarmed black man, in his apartment on September 6, police said. Still in her uniform, Guyger parked her car in the complex and walked to what she believed was her apartment, according to an arrest warrant affidavit.The door was slightly ajar as she tried to use her key, which has an electronic chip. When she opened the door, she saw the interior was almost completely dark, according to the affidavit. She described seeing a large silhouette and, believing there was an intruder in her apartment, drew her firearm.She issued verbal commands, but Jean, being in his own home, did not heed them, and Guyger fired two shots, hitting him once in the torso, the affidavit said.Guyger, a four-year veteran, then entered the apartment, called 911 and started administering first aid to Jean. She turned on the lights while on the phone with 911, and only when asked for her address did she realize she was in the wrong apartment, she told police.Jean died at a hospital. Guyger was arrested September 9 on suspicion on manslaughter, and was released from the Kaufman County Jail after posting a 0,000 bond.The Dallas Police Department fired Guyger during a hearing September 24, the police chief said.The shooting sparked days of protest. Police deployed pepper balls on demonstrators a week after the shooting.
