SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The University of California San Diego is getting ready to celebrate Dr. Suess. The celebration will include cake, carnival games, a read-a-thon, giant inflatable Suess characters and, of course, a selfie station. The event will also include a reading from “Happy Birthday to You!” in honor of the classic book's 60th anniversary. The event is scheduled to take place Friday at 11:45 in front of the Geisel Library. “We greatly treasure our Dr. Seuss Collection; it adds a creative dimension to the wealth of other papers and archives housed in Special Collections & Archives,” said UC San Diego’s Audrey Geisel University Librarian Erik Mitchell. 816

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — There have been 137 community outbreaks reported in San Diego County since June 1, according to San Diego County health officials.Since March 25, the county has reported 164 community outbreaks that have resulted in 1,220 coronavirus cases:March: 3April: 16May: 8June: 34July: 93August: 10County officials broke those numbers down from June 1, 2020, to Aug. 4, 2020, where the majority of community outbreaks have been reported at restaurant/bar and business settings. See the data below:The county adds that community outbreaks between June and August from business, restaurant, and restaurant/bar settings have resulted in a total of 212 cases in June, 508 cases in July, and 48 cases in August. On Wednesday, the county reported 30 community outbreaks, much high than the county's trigger of seven in a week.Even though a restaurant or restaurant/bar is linked to a community outbreak, County Public Health Officer Dr. Wilma Wooten says that doesn't mean a business is failing to adhere to public health orders.RELATED: San Diego County Board approves plan to allow businesses to operate at county parks"It may not mean there's anything going on wrong at the restaurant or at the restaurant/bar," Wooten said. "Most of our outbreaks we do deploy an assessment team and if they are restaurants, the Department of Environmental Health has taken that role until, as of Tuesday, when that will now be under the (county) compliance program."Wooten said investigators visit a reported business and make sure they are adhering to signage, social distancing, face covering, and sanitation measures. The county has said in the past it doesn't name locations where a community outbreak was traced to in order to encourage businesses to cooperate with COVID-19 case contact tracers. 1799

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — There's a reason dog-lovers thrive in San Diego.Beaches, dog-friendly restaurants and bars, animal care services. There's plenty to love in SD. And according to a new ranking, others feel the same — at least on a purely analytical basis.Technobark recently ranked San Diego as the seventh best U.S. city for dog owners. Thanks to an abundance of dog parks, dog beaches, and health services, San Diego was hailed as one of the best cities to own a dog.RELATED: See 10News' Pet of the WeekSurprised? You shouldn't be. San Diego ranked as one of the best cities for all pet owners last year, thanks to its abundance of pet businesses, dog-friendly restaurants, and animal shelters, according to WalletHub.The city took a hit in walkability and veterinary costs on that ranking, but made up for it with number of dog parks and pet caretakers.Of course, if you can't find somewhere to walk, you can also take some time to hang out with your dog at a bar or restaurant. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The threat of President Trump shutting down the southern border is causing widespread concerns in San Diego and Tijuana. Ev Meade is the director of USD's Transborder Institute. He says the impact on specific industries would be severe. "Think about the auto industry. You can't build a car in the United States or Canada right now without the part of the supply chain that's in Mexico. It's just fatal to shut that down," said Meade. He says even if the president doesn't close the border, the threat alone is damaging. "If you think about agriculture, on the other hand, Mexico is the biggest buyer of a long list of agricultural products, even if it doesn't happen, just the uncertainty that is cast over the market by doing that hurts that, it tells people we got to find another supply because we don't want to have empty shelves," said Meade. This weekend, President Trump announced he was cutting off funding to El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras. He also blamed Mexico for not doing enough to stop the flow of asylum seekers making their way north to the United States. Meade says cutting off aid to Central American countries will only lead to more migrants fleeing. "If you look at where it goes to, it goes to things like training the security forces, and training their immigration enforcement and strengthening judicial systems. There's some food and public health, and other things that are covered by it, but it's some real basic institutions in these societies that are pretty fragile to begin with and pulling that funding I think, I don't know anyone who thinks it's going to make them stronger, and if they're not stronger, it's not going to alleviate the pressure for people to leave," said Meade. Others say something has to be done. Marcia, who didn't want to give her last name, crosses the border at San Ysidro often to go to the dentist in Tijuana. She said cutting aid and closing the border might be a good idea."I think they need to manage their own governments and own borders, and we're not the bank of the world. We can't pay for everyone anymore. Everybody has to pay their fair share and take care of their own countries." Meade says all the countries need to work together on a solution to the immigration system. "Right now, you can't live in your home town or home city, but coming 1,500 miles to the United States and getting an individual asylum adjudication, that may be too high of a bar to cross, what's option B? And I tell you, a lot of people would take it if it were reasonable," Meade said. 2569
