LONDON — The British government says it won’t be using 50 million face masks it bought during a scramble to secure protective equipment for medics at the height of the coronavirus outbreak because of safety concerns. The masks were part of a 252 million pound (2 million) contract the government signed with investment firm Ayanda Capital in April. Papers filed in a court case reveal that the masks will not be distributed because they have ear loops rather than head loops and may not fit tightly enough. The government says another 150 million masks supplied by Ayanda are unaffected but are still being tested. The papers are part of a lawsuit against the Conservative government by campaigning groups the Good Law Project and EveryDoctor. As the coronavirus outbreak accelerated across the U.K. in March, it became clear that the country lacked sufficient stockpiles of masks, gloves, gowns and other protective gear for health care workers and nursing home staff. That sparked a race to buy billions of pieces of equipment from suppliers in the U.K. and abroad.Opposition parties are calling for an urgent investigation into the way personal protective equipment was acquired. 1189

Local veterans are getting help buying homes through a program that aims to give them an upper hand in the competitive southern California housing market.  So Cal VA Homes was founded six years ago by Peter Van Brady. He says he realized just how many issues his military clients were having buying a home with their benefits.  So he makes a cash offer on behalf of the vets and incorporates them in the renovation process. " And then we transfer the home to the veteran using their VA benefit for zero down and zero closing," said Brady. So far he's been able to help put nearly 40 veterans and their families into houses. For more information on how to apply go to : http://www.socalvahomes.org/ 740

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Families of those killed and wounded in a California shooting rampage three years ago are suing manufacturers and sellers of "ghost gun" kits that provide easy-to-assemble firearm parts that make it difficult to track or regulate owners.A pair of wrongful death lawsuits accuse 13 defendants of negligence, public nuisance and violation of business codes. The cases were brought by Brady United, the nonprofit that advocates against gun violence. One of the defendants calls the suits an attempt to to "frustrate the lawful purpose of making your own firearms."The other defendants didn't immediately respond to media requests for comment. 665

LOS ANGELES (AP) — ViacomCBS says it's cutting ties with Nick Cannon because of what the media giant called his "hateful speech” and anti-Semitic theories. The company’s move came in response to remarks made by Cannon on a podcast in which he discussed racial bias with a former Public Enemy member, Richard Griffin. On the podcast, Variety reports that Cannon said Black people are the “true Hebrews" and discussed anti-Semitic conspiracy theories involving the Rothschild family.“It’s never hate speech, you can’t be anti-Semitic when we are the Semitic people,” Cannon said, according to Variety. “When we are the same people who they want to be. That’s our birthright. We are the true Hebrews.”Cannon produced “Wild ’n Out,” a comedy improv series for VH1, the ViacomCBS-owned cable channel. He’s been a regular part of TV on shows unconnected to the company, including as the former host of NBC’s “America’s Got Talent” and host of Fox’s “The Masked Singer.”In an online post before ViacomCBS’ decision, Cannon said he doesn't condone hate speech. In a lengthy statement posted on Facebook Wednesday morning, Cannon wrote that he is saddened by the company’s decision and said, “the moment was stolen and highjacked to make an example of an outspoken Black man.”The 39-year-old apologized, saying “Systemic racism is what this world was built on and was the subject in which I was attempting to highlight in the recent clips that have been circulating from my podcast. If I have furthered the hate speech, I wholeheartedly apologize.”He ended by demanding ViacomCBS give him full ownership of the “Wild ’n Out” brand, which he says the company “will continue to misuse and destroy without my leadership!” 1713

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Jimmy Kimmel will host the first major Hollywood awards ceremony of the coronavirus pandemic — but just how the Emmy Awards will be held remains cloudy. Kimmel acknowledged that in Tuesday's announcement, saying it was unclear how or where the Sept. 20 ceremony will be held. ABC said details on the show's production will be announced soon. Choosing Kimmel to emcee the ceremony reverses course from last year's no-host Emmys. The entertainment industry is just beginning to restart production following a months-long shutdown aimed at curtailing the spread of COVID-19. Nominations for the 72nd prime-time Emmys will be announced by the TV academy on July 28. 688
