SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- A coded letter mailed to a San Francisco newspaper by the Zodiac serial killer in 1969 has been deciphered by a team of amateur sleuths from the United States, Australia and Belgium.The San Francisco Chronicle reports Friday the cipher is one of many sent by a killer who referred to himself as Zodiac in letters sent to detectives and the media.According to code-breaking expert David Oranchak, the cipher's text includes: "I am not afraid of the gas chamber because it will send me to paradise."The Zodiac terrorized Northern California communities and killed five people in the Bay Area in 1968 and 1969. 637

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)— Rady Children’s Hospital announced their partnership with Children's Specialized Hospital in New Jersey, to expand its opioid-free Pain Management Program.10News met 17-year-old Jasper Neale at Rady Children's Hospital. Neale said in the summer of 2014, he was at a junior lifeguards camp at Moonlight State Beach in Encinitas. When he was running on the sand, he fractured his heel. His family thought it was a straight forward injury. But the pain started to spread everywhere, making him immobile.“It went up my calf, and my whole leg and calf were getting really swollen,” Neale said. “It started with like a three out of ten, but it became a ten out of ten for my whole body.”His x-rays showed recovery, but his pain was not going away. The injury puzzled locals doctors. "They kind of just said, ‘We're not sure.’ This is the weirdest thing I've ever seen,” Neale said. Their last hope was the Children's Specialized Hospital in New Jersey, where they had an advanced chronic pain management program. There, the specialists told him his diagnosis: complex regional pain syndrome."You never take any drugs. You literally have nothing but yourself,” Neale said. Unlike traditional methods of pain relief, this program does not use any opioids.“People want a quick fix. The magic pill. The magic surgery to make everything get better, but most of the time, that's not available,” Andrew Skalsky, Division Chief of Rehabilitation Medicine at Rady Children’s Hospital, said. They have a tough love approach, combined with alternative therapies."I came in being unable to walk, and the very next day, they forced you to run. They forced you to swim."“Unfortunately with a lot of chronic pain patients, they actually have to somewhat create more pain to make themselves better, but then also giving them the emotional and psychological tool kit to cope with that pain,” Skalsky said.Today, Rady Children’s Hospital announced they too will be adopting this program, so in the future, patients like Neale can get the treatment they need closer to home. For Neale, it was a seven-week treatment in New Jersey that fixed his chronic nerve pain. He came back to Encinitas, not hooked on drugs. There were no side effects. "From the day I left to now, I can do everything I want to do,” Neale said. Neale’s recovery led to the discovery of a new passion. The 6’8” senior at San Dieguito Academy is now a star volleyball player. In the fall, he will play for the University of Toronto."Going from being completely dysfunctional, to being a fully functioning human, with only doing it through physical therapy and natural ways is amazing,” Neale said. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Apple is paying Intel billion for the chip maker's smartphone modem division in a deal driven by the upcoming transition to the next generation of wireless technology.The agreement announced Thursday comes three months after Apple ended a long-running dispute with one of Intel's rivals, Qualcomm. That ensured Apple would have a pipeline of chips it needs for future iPhones to work on ultrafast wireless networks known as 5G.The Apple-Qualcomm truce prompted Intel to abandon its attempts to make chips for 5G modems, effectively putting that part of its business up for grabs.Once the sale is completed later this year Apple will be picking up about 2,200 Intel employees and 17,000 wireless technology patents. Barring any complications, the deal is expected to close sometime between October and December.Apple's purchase of Intel's smartphone modem patents and other technology could bolster its attempt to build its own line 5G chips and lessen its dependence on Qualcomm. The Cupertino, California, has hammered out a licensing agreement with Qualcomm that carries through April 2025, with an option to extend for an additional two years after that.Qualcomm is a pivotal supplier in the rollout of 5G, particularly in the U.S. That's because President Donald Trump's administration has blacklisted another key 5G supplier, Huawei, as part of its trade war with China.So far, 5G connections are only available in a few cities in the U.S., but they are expected to become more prevalent by next year. Many dads were happy to take their loved ones out for a hearty meal, now that COVID-19 restrictions have become a little looser.All around town, there were lines out the door for Father's Day brunch. This was a welcome sight for San Diego restaurant owners."We missed mother's day, and we missed spring break," Johnny Rivera, co-owner of Hash House A Go Go in Hillcrest said. "These are the acorns in our business that we like to gather. And now that it's Father's Day, we feel like kind of back to normal today."During last month's Mother's Day, restaurants were only allowed to offer curbside pick up and delivery due to County Health Department rules. But now that dining restrictions have eased up, the 'Papa Bears' were ready for their big outing."They seem like they're coming out of hibernation a little bit," Rivera laughed.Some were still a bit hesitant to dine out."We were a little skeptical about it, but we still enjoy going out here and there," father, Alan Valdez said. He and his family were dining at Breakfast Republic in Downtown San Diego.Others were publicly ready to celebrate fatherhood with their loved ones."We were all waiting by our cars," a diner at Hash House A Go Go said. "We got a phone call, and everybody kept their distance while we were waiting." Three generations of his family were dining out, after getting a last-minute table at the restaurant.
