SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The doctor responsible for one third of vaccine exemptions in the San Diego Unified School District fired back Thursday at critics who say her science isn’t sound. Dr. Tara Zandvliet has a refrigerator full of vaccines at her office in South Park. She administers them to her young patients, but she also writes medical exemptions for some children. “It’s the kids that are sensitive that you need to just take a little bit different tack with,” said Zandvliet. Zandvliet wrote exemptions for 162 of the 487 children who provided SDUSD with a medical reason to avoid the vaccines required for entry. Despite the number, Zandvliet says she does not consider herself anti-vaccine. “I’m not gonna write a medical exemption just cause someone wants it. I’m not gonna write it or not write it just because the school says ‘hey we have too many of them’,” she said. Since California became one of three states to ban personal belief exemptions for vaccines, the number of medical exemptions has risen. So has the number of children being vaccinated. San Diego Unified officials issued a statement about the situation, saying in part the district "has noticed some physicians issuing exemptions that appear to be excessively frequent and based on criteria that are not aligned with guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.” Zandvliet’s website says she will grant an exemption based on factors like family history of allergies or autoimmune disease, neither of which are recognized by the Centers for Disease Control as valid reasons for exemption. “I refuse 7 out of ten; the three that come in they've convinced me they have proof they've given me medical records from family members and it’s there,” Zandvliet said. Other doctors disagree with Zandvliet’s reasoning, including State Senator Richard Pan, who is also a physician. He was behind the law to get rid of the personal belief exemption and is now trying to make it harder for parents to get a medical exemption. A beach hazards statement will remain in effect until Friday at 3 a.m. According to the National Weather Service, waves will reach three to six feet accompanied by dangerous rip currents. “Remember to swim near a lifeguard if going out in the ocean,” said 10News meteorologist Megan Parry. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The County Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday to send a letter to Gov. Gavin Newsom requesting they be allowed to reopen the local economy.The board voted 4-1, with Supervisor Nathan Fletcher voting "no," to take further steps into reopening amid the coronavirus pandemic. The letter requests San Diego County be permitted to reopen gyms, hotels, nail salons, wineries and breweries, churches at full capacity, theme parks, youth sports, charter and fishing boats, community pools, and museums, Supervisor Jim Desmond tweeted.Following the vote, Desmond said in a statement that it will be up to Newsom, but that most of the board believes the county is ready.RELATED: Passive recreation activities now allowed at San Diego County beaches"Just now, the Board approved a plan telling the Governor we are ready to open for business. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The mother of a Southern California girl diagnosed with rat-bite fever is sharing her story at a San Diego hospital Friday to educate other parents about the danger. Rat-bite fever is a potentially deadly infection spread through contact with domestic rats. 8-year-old Cali from Menifee contracted the disease when the rat’s saliva came into contact with an open wound, according to Rady Children’s Hospital officials. Cali has eczema on her fingers which may have contributed to the situation, a doctor said.Rat-bite fever is a bacterial disease which can cause a rash, fever, and body aches.The illness started Friday night, said Cali's mother Sabrina. By Sunday, Cali had a fever of 104.6 degrees. She lost the ability to use her hands and arms and had a whole-body rash."Really, really scary. Really hard to watch," said Sabrina.Cali's family bought two rats, Shell and Onyx, from a feed store about two years ago with no warning about the potential of rat-bite fever.Doctors recommended the family get rid of their rats."We didn't want to do it," said Sabrina. “It’s not a fun thing to tell your kid you’ve got to get rid of your best friend."Cali's mother had a recommendation for other parents."Just know that this can happen," she said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The man who was convicted of driving drunk when he hit a Lyft car, killing the driver, was sentenced in court Thursday.Steven Quintero was sentenced to 16 years in prison following an emotional day in court in which three young women in the car at the time of the crash and the victim’s sister all gave statements. “The worst part of my story is that I remember every detail of the crash," said Kelly Hoffman with a shaky voice. "I am haunted by the memory of the violent, powerful impact and the sound of the bending metal and shattering glass," she added.A jury convicted Quintero of DUI causing injury, hit-and-run and driving on a suspended license in the crash that killed Henry Reyes along State Route 94 just east of downtown San Diego.RELATED: Driver who hit and killed Lyft driver in 2016 faces retrialThe crash happened on October 1, 2016. Reyes pulled over on the side of the road when one of the passengers inside the Lyft, Sarah Smith, got sick.When Reyes pulled over, he got out to help Smith out of the car and get her water. While walking around the front of the car to get back in, the Lyft was struck from behind, killing Reyes.Smith, Hoffman and Jessica Techel all suffered major injuries in the crash. “When I see photos of the car I am reminded that I’m lucky to be alive, have all my limbs and my mental capacity," Techel told the court.Reyes' sister brought photos of her brother to court. In one of them, he was with his 2-year-old son. Evette Rous testified how important her brother was to her and her family.  He gave her away at her wedding, and was always around with a sarcastic comment for his sister. She said her life is forever changed. “When Steven Quintero made the decision to drink and drive, he not only killed my brother, he killed a part of each of us who lived Henry. He killed dreams, and memories yet to be made," she said.Rous said her mother didn't come to court because she felt there was no justice for Henry Reyes.  The victims all testified they were disappointed when two different juries failed to convict Quintero of murder.  In exchange for not trying Quintero a third time, he agreed to go to prison for 16 years, without the possibility of probation.  Quintero also agreed not to appeal his case.Quintero did not address or even look at his victims as they spoke.  His attorney told them he apologizes for his actions and is filled with remourse.Rous called the apology an insult.The 2016 crash wasn’t the first time Quintero was found to be driving under the influence.
