LOS ANGELES (AP) — Authorities say a Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy who said he was shot in a station parking lot was lying.Assistant Sheriff Robin Limon said at a news conference late Saturday that Wednesday's "reported sniper assault was fabricated" by Angel Reinosa, a 21-year-old deputy.A department statement on Thursday had said a round hit the top of Reinosa's shoulder, damaging his uniform shirt but failing to penetrate his flesh. But Sheriff's Capt. Kent Wegener says no bullets were recovered from the scene and detectives saw "no visible injuries." He says Reinosa eventually admitted making up the story and using a knife to cut the two holes in his shirt.Reinosa has been relieved of his duties and will face a criminal investigation. Wegener says Reinosa didn't explain a motive. 807

LOS ANGELES (AP) — California growers are frustrated by an unusually wet spring that has delayed the planting of crops like rice and damaged others including strawberries and wine grapes.Rice grower Kurt Richter said Tuesday that storms forced him to wait weeks to start seeding his land in Colusa County. And rice that he managed to get into the ground is in a "refrigerated state" because of colder than usual temperatures that threaten to reduce yields.Watsonville strawberry farmer Peter Navarro tells the Santa Cruz Sentinel that recent wet weather is disrupting his picking schedule and causing a loss of production.Much of California has seen two to five times more precipitation than is normal for this point in May. The wet trend is expected to continue through the month. 789

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - The company that operated the helicopter that crashed in Calabasas in January, killing Laker legend Kobe Bryant and eight others, is fighting back against lawsuits over the tragedy, filing a suit of its own contending air-traffic controllers are to blame for the crash. The suit, filed last week as a cross-complaint to litigation against Island Express Helicopters, contends the crash was "caused by a series of erroneous acts and/or omissions" by a pair of air-traffic controllers at Southern California TRACON, or terminal radar approach control.Ian Gregor, a spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration, which operates the facility, said the agency "does not comment on pending litigation."The helicopter, a 1991 Sikorsky S76B piloted by Ara Zobayan, crashed amid heavy fog on Jan. 26 on a Calabasas hillside, killing the pilot and his eight passengers, including Bryant and his 13-year-old daughter Gianna. At least four lawsuits have been filed against Island Express Helicopters in the months since the crash, including one by Bryant's wife, Vanessa, and others by relatives of other passengers aboard the aircraft. In its cross-complaint, attorneys for Island Express contend that Zobayan contacted the SoCal TRACON facility and requested "flight following," or radar assistance. The request, however, was denied by an air-traffic controller who said, "I'm going to lose radar and comms probably pretty shortly," according to the lawsuit."This denial was improper because radar contact had not been lost and services were being denied based on the possibility that they might be lost at some point in the future," the lawsuit states. "The fact that (the pilot) was able to contact (TRACON) four minutes later, and its transponder was still observed by the controller, proves that the prediction of lost contact was not accurate and services could and should have been provided continuously."The lawsuit claims that the air-traffic controller who initially spoke to Zobayan was relieved a short time later by a second controller. The first controller, however, failed to inform his replacement "as to the existence" of the helicopter, even though he had never "terminated radar services" with the helicopter, leading the pilot to assume "he was still being surveilled and being provided flight following."It was at roughly that point that Zobayan reported his plan to begin climbing above the clouds and fog while banking to the left. A short time later, the helicopter plunged rapidly into the ground, resulting in the fiery crash that killed all aboard, according to the lawsuit. The suit accuses the initial air-traffic controller of "multiple errors," including "failure to properly communicate termination of radar flight following, incomplete position relief briefing and lack of knowledge of current weather conditions." Those failures added to the pilot's stress, workload and distraction, and "significantly impacted the pilot's ability to fly the aircraft."The suit seeks unspecified damages. 3039

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Two Iranian men are facing federal charges for allegedly masterminding an international computer hacking scheme that used ransomware to extort about ,000 in Bitcoin from Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center and also targeted dozens of other victims, including the Port of San Diego, the U.S. Department of Justice announced Wednesday.Faramarz Shahi Savandi, 34, and Mohammad Mehdi Shah Mansouri, 27, were indicted by a federal grand jury in Newark, New Jersey, for the scheme that caused more than million in losses and allowed the alleged hackers to collect over million in ransom payments, according to the DOJ. The six-count indictment, unsealed Wednesday, alleges that Savandi and Mansouri, acting from inside Iran, authored malware capable of forcibly encrypting data on the computers of more than 200 victims, including Hollywood Presbyterian and the Port of San Diego. RELATED: Demand for Bitcoin included in Port of San Diego cyberattack ransom noteThe Port of San Diego revealed in September that it was working with federal law enforcement to find the culprit behind a cybersecurity attack that took place weeks earlier. The attack had temporary impacts on business services, park permits and public records requests, a port spokeswoman said. Ransomware was used in the attack and included a note requesting payment in Bitcoin. While some of the port's information technology systems were compromised, staff proactively shut down other systems to avoid further problems, the spokeswoman said. In February 2016, Hollywood Presbyterian announced it had paid a ransom of about ,000 in Bitcoin to restore its electronic medical record system after a cyber-attack that crippled its computer system but did not compromise patient care or patient and employee personal information. The attack prevented hospital staff from accessing selected computer systems and blocking electronic communications, medical center officials said. According to prosecutors, starting in December 2015, Savandi and Mansouri allegedly accessed victim computers through security vulnerabilities and installed the SamSam Ransomware. They then allegedly demanded ransom paid in the virtual currency Bitcoin in exchange for decryption keys for the encrypted data, collected payments and exchanged the Bitcoin into Iranian currancy using Iran-based Bitcoin exchangers. Assistant U.S. Attorney General Brian A. Benczkowski described the scheme as ``21st-century digital blackmail'' in which the defendants allegedly used ransomware to ``infect the computer networks of municipalities, hospitals, and other key public institutions, locking out the computer owners, and then demanded millions of dollars in payments from them.'' Savandi and Mansouri are charged with one count each of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and conspiracy to commit fraud and related activity in connection with computers, and two substantive counts each of intentional damage to a protected computer and transmitting a demand in relation to damaging a protected computer. The DOJ alleged that the men disguised the hacks to appear like legitimate network activity, launching attacks outside regular business hours, when victims would find it more difficult to fix the problem, and by encrypting backups of the victim computers. 3320
