BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) — Cars and the coronavirus are two things that have not meshed well. It's creating what is now called a "COVID Car." "COVID cars are cars that have been sitting around for a long time and the batteries do not work," Bob Gugino, owner of Bison Automotive said. Gugino says he has seen a number of cars with similar issues with rotting brakes, dead batteries and severe neglect. "Every day people are working more and more from home so this is a consequence of that," Gugino said. These consequences of cars just sitting around are happening to vehicles of all ages. "All cars, whether new or old," Gugino said, "It affects the older ones a little bit more but every car, if it's not run, can have the battery die and the brakes rot out."The best way to make sure that does not happen? Drive your car around even if you don't plan on going anywhere. "Get the car up and go for a ride," Gugino said, "You need 20-25 minutes of driving."This story originally reported by Jeff Slawson on WKBW.com. 1022

Charlottesville, Virginia, is again bracing for journalists and protesters to converge on the city as jury selection begins Monday for the man accused of killing Heather Heyer at last year's Unite the Right rally.James Fields of Maumee, Ohio, is accused of plowing his Dodge Challenger into a crowd of counterprotesters during the August 2017 white nationalist gathering, killing Heyer and injuring several other people, police say.Heyer, 32, was a local paralegal and had attended the rally to speak out against white supremacy and racism. Her friends and families say she died for her beliefs.Fields stands charged with first-degree murder in Heyer's death. He also faces five counts of malicious wounding, three counts of aggravated malicious wounding and one count of failing to stop at an accident involving a death.Separately, he is charged with hate crimes in a 30-count federal indictment. Prosecutors in that case allege Fields espoused white supremacist ideals and denounced minorities on social media before traveling to Virginia for the rally. Once there, the indictment says, he drove his car into a crowd with the intention of hurting people he targeted based on his bigoted views. The 21-year-old has pleaded not guilty to the federal charges. It's unclear whether he has entered a plea to the state charges, though a trial would not likely be necessary if he had pleaded guilty. His attorney, Denise Lunsford, did not return an email seeking comment. Fields is being held without bail in the Albemarle/Charlottesville Regional Jail. 1564

Can you spot a fake? Some US Customs and Border Protection officers did -- in September, they intercepted a shipment of over over 9,000 counterfeit Nike sneakers in New York, the agency said in a news release. The shipment of shoes had come from China and was headed to California, when CBP officers inspected it at the Port of New York/Newark.They thought something looked off about the shoes, and submitted images to the CBP's Apparel Footwear and Textiles Center for Excellence and Expertise, the agency's trade experts. On Thursday, the agency concluded the shoes were counterfeit and seized them. Real versions of the sneakers would have been worth nearly .7 million, according to CBP."This significant seizure of counterfeit Nike sneakers illustrates Customs and Border Protection's continued commitment to protecting the American consumer against the proliferation of substandard and potentially unsafe counterfeit consumer goods," stated Troy Miller, Director of CBP's New York Field Office, said in a statement Tuesday. On a typical day in 2017, CBP seized .3 million worth of products with Intellectual Property Rights violations in a day, according to the agency."Enforcing Intellectual Property Rights laws is a CBP priority trade mission," said Miller. "We will continue to work closely with our trade and law enforcement partners to identify and seize counterfeit merchandise that could potentially harm US consumers and businesses." 1460
