United Airlines is reportedly working with the CDC to alert passengers onboard a flight last week from Orlando to Los Angeles they may have been exposed to COVID-19 after a passenger had an inflight medical emergency and later died. A man who tried to help the man is now reporting symptoms.United says a man onboard flight UA591 on December 14 had coronavirus-like symptoms, including loss of taste and smell, according to statements his wife made, before suffering a medical emergency onboard.A nurse and EMT began CPR on the passenger as the flight was diverted to New Orleans to get the man help.When the plane landed, they believed the man’s emergency was cardiac arrest, and they allowed passengers to “take a later flight or continue on with their travel plans,” the airline told NBC News.The airline now says they were contacted by the CDC and “are sharing requested information with the agency so they can work with local health officials to conduct outreach to any customer the CDC believes may be at risk for possible exposure or infection," a representative for the airline told CBS LA.The man who says he performed CPR on the passenger, Tony Aldapa, says he is now experiencing symptoms of COVID-19. TRINITY, Fla. — Family and friends of a man who recently suffered a fractured skull are speaking out about delays in care from a Florida hospital they believe made his condition worse.On what was supposed to be a fun night playing softball, Donnie Smith's life changed forever.Smith had just thrown a pitch, when a line drive hit him in the head.“Donnie went immediately to the ground,” said teammate Bryan Williams. “Blood was coming out of his nose. You could already see the swelling.”At that point, they knew it was bad.  Another teammate took him to the nearest emergency room, which was at Medical Center of Trinity, about two miles south of the ballpark.  Donnie got to Trinity at 7:46 p.m. local time“You figure a hospital is a hospital. It's there to take care of emergencies,” said teammate Jimmy Sigmone.But not all emergency rooms can handle all emergencies, as Smith's sister Patti Dermer was about to learn.By the time she arrived, a CT scan showed his injury was potentially life-threatening.By 8:20 p.m., they knew he had a fractured skull and a brain bleed.But doctors at Trinity couldn't perform emergency surgery to relieve the pressure.At 9:16 p.m., a doctor signed a transfer order, and a surgical team was placed on stand-by 13 miles away at the Bayonet Point Trauma Center.“There were ambulances sitting outside the door, and they wouldn't put him in it,” said Deremer.As seconds and minutes ticked by, Smith's condition worsened.“He's going gray, sweating profusely, chills everywhere,” Deremer said.She said she was alone with him in an ER Bay for most of the time they were waiting.He was given an ice pack to hold on his head.  By 10 o'clock, Donnie’s heart rate dropped to under 40 beats a minute.“He wound up throwing up blood all over the room. Blood started gushing out of his nose,” Dermer said.Records indicate the ER staff had called for a helicopter, but it couldn't fly due to weather conditions. “It was the longest night of my life,” Deremer said. “Literally, I was out there screaming at people.”By 10:20 p.m., Donnie’s blood pressure spiked and his pulse was dropping.The ER team rushed him to another room and put him to sleep.  Records show that finally at 10:21 p.m., the first call from Trinity was made to Pasco County EMS for an ambulance.It was two-and-a-half hours after Donnie first arrived at Trinity and more than an hour after a doctor signed the transfer order.Donnie finally got to Bayonet Point at 11:25 p.m., four hours after the softball fractured his skull.Friends wish they'd called 911 from the ball field, so paramedics would have taken him where he needed to go the first time.“You can point a million fingers. UPDATE 6:04 PMThe bus driver, a 52-year-old man from Whittier, Calif., survived with minor injuries and was speaking with CHP investigators. 10News learned the charter bus originated from El Monte in East Los Angeles and made multiple stops en route to San Ysidro, including Riverside and Murrieta. The bus crashed about 20 miles south of Murrieta in Pala Mesa.Three females, described as Hispanic, were killed in the crash, authorities said.According to officials, a five-year-old male passenger was transported to Riverside University Health Systems Medical Center, about 50 miles north from the scene of the crash.Five other passengers were transported to Palomar Hospital, seven were transported to Temecula Valley Hospital, and five were taken to Inland Valley Hospital. Their conditions are unknown at this time.California Highway Patrol said the bus was equipped with seat belts. (KGTV) — At least three people were killed and 18 other people were injured after a charter bus crashed and overturned on Interstate 15 Saturday.The bus was on southbound I-15 just south of State Route 76 before 10:30 a.m. The bus lost control for some reason, skidding into the dirt on the freeway's shoulder and overturning.Officers arrived to find the bus overturned with at least one passenger trapped inside still. Crews also needed to stabilize the bus to prevent it from falling down an embankment.At least three people were killed, according to North County Fire Protection District (NCFPD). One victim was found dead inside the bus, NCFPD Capt. John Choi told City News Service. Some passengers were ejected from the crash.Eighteen people were taken to Inland Valley Hospital, Palomar Medical Center, and Temecula for injuries ranging from minor to critical condition. The ages of passengers ranges from minors to adults.The bus driver, a man from Whittier, Calif., survived with minor injuries and was speaking with CHP investigators. TUCSON, Ariz. — With hospitals at capacity due to a surge in COVID-19 cases, an Arizona woman says her mother had to wait 13 hours in bed in a hallway while waiting for a room to open up.Sam Bero said her mother went to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tempe last week after delaying care for an infection earlier this year.Bero said her mother's illness went from infection to kidney stones, and eventually turned into a larger medical issue.“It just ended up turning into a bigger problem than it should've been,” she said.The Center for Disease Control released a report in June that estimated that 41% of U.S. adults had avoided medical care because of COVID-19 concerns — included 12% who reported having avoided urgent or emergency care.Bero said her mother got to the hospital at 1 p.m. and wasn't given a room until 2:45 a.m.“They were triaging patients in the waiting room, so doing all the blood pressure, IVs and all in the waiting room,” Bero said. “And then, when she finally did get a bed, she was in a bed in the hallway for 13 hours.”On Tuesday, the Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS) reported that there are 192 ICU beds available across Arizona and 1,093 inpatient beds available. ADHS is reported the highest number of inpatient COVID-19 patients in this new surge, with 2,084 people in their hospital metrics.COVID-19 patients in ICUs also are climbing with 474 people hospitalized — a similar number we saw right before a surge in cases this summer.Hospital leaders across Arizona say that the number of available beds can change throughout the day as the number of patients goes can change.A spokesperson for Carondelet Health Network — the company that operates St. Joseph's — said that while their hospitals continue to have the capacity to treat patients needing medical care, “like any hospital, the number of patients in-house can fluctuate daily.”Hospitals across Arizona are working to secure more staffing, as there is expected to be an increase in hospitalizations from COVID-19 in the coming weeks.“We commend our team of health care professionals who are working valiantly to ensure our preparedness as we continue caring for our community,” the Carondelet spokesperson said.Bero said her mother has since been released from the hospital, and she’s expected to be okay.“The poor nurses and doctors are so overworked,” she said.This story was originally published by Nicole Grigg on KNXV in Phoenix. 2441

VALLEY CENTER (CNS) - A motorist was killed today when he crashed his car off a two-lane rural road northeast of Escondido while trying to pass another vehicle at high speed, authorities reported.The 35-year-old San Marcos resident lost control of his Acura TL while attempting to steer around a slower-moving Toyota Highlander on Valley Center Road near Rock Hill Ranch Road about 1:15 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.The Acura sideswiped the SUV, then skidded off the roadway and crashed into a power pole and a tree, killing the driver and sole occupant of the sedan, CHP public-affairs Officer Mark Latulippe said.The 35-year-old San Marcos woman behind the wheel of the Toyota was unharmed, as were the six young children riding in her vehicle, Latulippe said. 790
