(KGTV) – The Chula Vista Elementary School District’s appearance on a website list of applicants seeking to reopen schools was determined to be a mistake, the district told ABC 10News.CVESD never applied for a waiver, stating on their Facebook page on Thursday night:“We are aware of a ‘Chula Vista Elementary’ fraudulently being listed as an applicant for a school reopening waiver. Our District has NOT applied for a waiver to reopen our schools. As a part of the waiver process, we would consult with labor units, parents and community organizations first. Our District is working with investigative authorities to determine how documents were submitted purporting ‘Chula Vista Elementary’ is a waiver applicant with the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency.”District officials said the 2020-21 school year will begin Aug. 31 with distance learning.On Friday, a district spokesperson told ABC 10News that the listing was the result of an error made by an independent charter school that selected the Chula Vista district name on the San Diego County Health and Human Services website.The spokesperson said the HHSA informed the district of the mistake and the website has since been corrected.Meanwhile, at least 27 schools in San Diego County have already been given the green light to begin in-person learning, with dozens of other schools still waiting for approval.Those schools that have been approved have several things in common, including the ability to maximize outdoor space.The Rancho Santa Fe School District is on the list of those that can bring students back to campus, and Superintendent Donna Tripi said preparing for this was not an easy task."We had to work on the class groupings, we had to do training for staff, training for parents, we had to write up all the protocols and really think out every move that everyone makes on campus,” Tripi said.San Diego County was removed for California's virus monitoring list on Aug. 18, beginning the 14-day countdown the county needs to stay off the list in order to reopen K-12 schools in-person.On-campus classes could resume as soon as Sept. 1, depending on the school district. 2188

(KGTV) - A report says Chula Vista faces an immediate need for more police staffing to keep up with rapid growth, and that traffic congestion will worsen in the coming years.At a Special Meeting called for Thursday evening, the city’s Growth Management Oversight Commission (GMOC) is expected to present to the city council its review for fiscal year 2018, which includes recommendations on how to properly address issues directly caused by the city's progression.Chula Vista’s exponential growth over the past five years has led to a big increase in homes being built across Chula Vista. The city says “the number of residential building permits issued in Chula Vista averaged 1,008 units per calendar year” between 2013-2018. "This rate of growth is projected to continue or increase over the next five years, according to Chula Vista’s 2018 Residential Growth Forecast, updated in April 2019," the GMOC says. "With growth comes the demand for additional services and facilities."The GMOC warns that the Chula Vista's police department is not prepared to accommodate anticipated growth in the next 12-18 months or five years. CHULA VISTA (KGTV) -- Talk about setting the academics bar high.An unexpected message sent to families of Rancho del Rey Middle School in Otay Ranch Wednesday night left about 2000 students trying to explain why they were required to attend Saturday School.("Could you describe the ruckus, sir," was probably said.)The school blitzed automated phone messages, texts, and emails alerting parents or guardians to have their child at school 8 a.m. Saturday morning for a half day of study."A teacher will come out to greet your student and escort them to a classroom, they are released at 12pm. Students should bring school work or reading materials for a 4 hour period of study," the message said.The school, which broadcast the messages to every registered family at around 5 p.m., confirmed about five hours later that the barrage of alerts was an error. "Earlier today a message about Saturday School was sent to all students. Please disregard the message, it was meant for a select group of students that needed to attend," said Rancho del Rey Middle School Assistant Principal Michael Govea.Since the school offices were closed when the messages were sent, nobody was around to answer calls from anxious families. In the span of that radio silence, trepidation across the student body prompted people to search for answers on Facebook."A few of my son friends received a notice for Saturday school from rancho del Rey middle. These kids are good student with no absences. Any parent receive a message about Saturday school?," one parent posted on a Facebook community page."I hope they send another message out saying it was a mistake or they are going to have a huge drop off on Saturday morning for Saturday school lol," another parent wrote.While the epic Breakfast Club summit won't take place, the school is requiring at least some students to be at campus this weekend. (KGTV) - More than a dozen people were forced out their homes late Tuesday night after a driver crashed her car into a fire hydrant at an apartment complex in Chula Vista, causing water to be sent nearly 30 feet into the air.At around 11:45 p.m., Chula Vista police responded to reports of a geyser spewing water into the air on 3rd Avenue.The geyser, from a broken fire hydrant, flooded a nearby apartment complex, forcing the evacuation of 16 people from six units, four of which were heavily flooded.A black car that struck the hydrant tried to leave just after the wreck, but the car's female driver eventually came back to speak with officers. Police questioned the young driver, but she was released.City crews spent a few hours helping clear the water from the apartments. 807

Churches across the country are doing what they can to connect to parishioners from a distance. Now, some are switching from online back to in-person during this pandemic."It wasn't easy. It wasn't the best, but our people did well with it, and we tried to make the best of that situation. We had a lot of people that would come into the church to help put things together technically and musically and that sort of thing. And all that time, trying to maintain proper distancing," explained Dean Ropp, pastor of Midway Community Church in Georgia.From Zoom bible studies to prayer meetings over the phone, Ropp says their parishioners continue to tune in and stay engaged. But many still desired that in-person connection to their church. So Midway Community Church started offering their Sunday service in-person."As time went on, we were looking for ways we could get back together safely, and in our context, we decided with our size and facilities, we would try outdoor services,” the pastor said. “We have done outdoor services before, because we wanted to and so we knew how to do it.”Midway Community Church already had a stage that was set up in a grove of oak and pecan trees on their property, plus other equipment that they could move outdoors. They put in some extra precautions to keep people safe, like having people bring their own chairs."Then, we also, in this case, rather than sitting close together like we'd like to, we have cones set up for every family or individual, so everyone keeps a little eye on their distancing and that sort of thing," said Pastor Ropp.While attendance was terrific, Pastor Ropp decided they'd only hold the outdoor services every three weeks to ensure they weren't spreading the coronavirus. The outdoor services are one extra way for the church to stay connected with people since some aren't too keen on online church services or have had a hard time keeping up with church events because of the pandemic.Pastor Ropp says people were appreciative of the fact that they could still get together and physically be at church, even if it was from a distance."I can’t tell you how grateful we all were to be able to do it, the first time especially. It’s really carried that enthusiasm each time because we do love being together. That’s part of who we are as a church," said Pastor Ropp.As for how long churches across the country will be able to maintain an outdoor or online presence with their community, time and COVID-19 statistics will tell. Outdoor services may be difficult in the winter.Pastor Ropp says they're taking things month by month and brainstorming different ways to keep their church community together."There are a number of ideas we’ve had in how we would do it, whether it would be online registration or do it by classes the different groups were connected with,” he said. “So, there's a couple options we can do. We’re hoping we can get through it without going to that.”He says some people who may be suffering during the pandemic may need their local church now more than ever, so he hopes people who do belong to a church can continue to stay plugged into whatever services being offered. 3171
