LOS ANGELES (KGTV) - Surveillance video released by the Los Angeles Police Department shows a violent taco truck robbery that left a worker with injuries.Three men entered the truck as it was parked on West Manchester Ave. in South Los Angeles around 3 a.m. on July 14.Police said the men forced the workers to the ground and demanded cash.One worker was pistol-whipped during the hold-up. There is no word on his condition.The suspects were not able to gain access to the safe in the taco truck. They took the workers’ cell phones and cash before leaving, investigators said.Los Angeles Police said the men were last seen running from the location with the victims’ property. They were described as in their 20s with no distinctive physical features.Anyone with information was asked to call the LAPD. 810

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Sheriff Alex Villanueva Tuesday said a weekend raid of "a massive underground party" at a vacant Palmdale residence -- despite health restrictions against large gatherings and a statewide curfew in place due to the coronavirus pandemic -- led to 158 arrests and the rescue of a 17- year-old victim of human trafficking.The Saturday night party in the 6300 block of West Avenue M-8 was allegedly organized by a teen promoter who was one of the people arrested when sheriff's deputies descended on the event, Villanueva said."Parties like these often involve drugs, prostitution, underage drinking and violence," Villanueva said at a news conference Tuesday morning outside the Hall of Justice, where he announced the 158 arrests as well as the rescue of the human trafficking victim and the recovery of six firearms from the location."We were able to rescue a girl who was present and categorized as a commercially sexually exploited child," Villanueva said.Involved in the law enforcement operation were personnel from the sheriff's Palmdale Station, the Human Trafficking Task Force, Operation Safe Streets Bureau, Aero Bureau, three mobile field forces and Los Angeles County Fire Department paramedics.According to Fox11, which had been tracking the 17-year-old promoter's alleged activities and was on scene when the raid occurred, 116 adults were cited and released for various misdemeanor offenses, while seven people were booked into jail. Another 35 juveniles were also cited and released. The arrests included three adults and two juveniles booked on suspicion of burglary, while one juvenile was arrested on a gun charge, the station reported.When stricter health orders were announced last week, including plans for the state's regional stay-at-home order that took effect late Sunday night, Villanueva said his department would continue to rely on the public's adherence to restrictions."Since March, we have continued to focus on education and voluntary compliance regarding health orders," he wrote on Twitter. "Moving forward, we will additionally be conducting targeted enforcement of super-spreader events."The Palmdale party was considered just such an event, Villanueva said at the news conference."As you can see, this was a flagrant violation of the governor's health order," Villanueva said. "But also please understand, even without the health order, these actions were criminal in nature."Villanueva said COVID-19 protocols were maintained by the law enforcement personnel, including providing those who were detained with protective masks.Sheriff's Capt. Ron Shaffer said the homeowner did not give permission for the residence to be used for such a gathering."They were looking to rent it to a family," Shaffer said.According to Fox11, the residence used for the party was up for rent, but the party organizers were allegedly in the home illegally.Los Angeles County and state health restrictions in place due to the coronavirus ban gatherings with people from different households. LIVONIA, Mich. — A racially offensive history lesson involving slavery has a Detroit mother outraged and calling out her daughter’s school. The parent Livonia, Michigan says she’s speaking out so no other child has to go through a similar situation. Now, the school is issuing a statement of its own.The lesson came during a seventh-grade social studies lesson at Frost Middle School in Livonia that left student Jade Holt disgusted. “It was weird and uncomfortable,” Jade said. She said her course on the history of slavery included a question that read: “A slave stands before you. This slave has disrespected his master by telling him you are not my master. How will you punish this slave?”“I read the question and typed my answer. It was, 'there will be no punishment because I do not believe in slavery,'” Jade said. “I never want my daughter to feel that way again, the way she felt this morning,” Jade's mother Jaala Holt said.She believes the teacher also isn’t the only one to blame. “Everything has to be approved before it’s given to the children. So, for whomever approved this inappropriate question for seventh graders, I find it asinine for me,” Jaala said.A school spokesperson released the statement below, which read, in part:“Concerns from a parent were brought to our attention this morning, and we have reviewed a social studies assignment given to three classes of our seventh-grade students. We recognize the assignment in question was not constructed appropriately, as we believe in the importance of approaching topics of slavery in any era of world history with the utmost care and consideration.”The principal hasn’t said if anyone has been disciplined. LOCKPORT, N.Y. — Theresa Mellas spent eight weeks on the front lines of the COVID crisis, then decided she needed a different kind of challenge to help her take that experience all in.Mellas booked a one-way flight to Portland, Oregon, bought a bike off of Craigslist that night, and hit the road the next morning.Almost 3,500 miles later she rode right into the ocean at Staten Island last week.But let’s go back to March. Mellas was visiting her twin sister in Germany when she touched back down in Lockport, New York right at the start of the COVID crisis.She’s been a traveling physician assistant for almost ten years and that forced her to have a tough conversation with herself.“What am I doing here? I’m a healthcare provider. Let’s step it up, T. Let’s do this,” she said to herself.She said her parents encouraged her to take up the call from Governor Andrew Cuomo for help at the frontlines. It was a challenging time.“The contract was for 25 days straight. Straight, yeah,” said Mellas. “And then you could renew your contract, so I did.”On top of working in the ICU at a hospital in North Central Bronx overnights, 7 pm to 7 am, Mellas picked up some work in urgent care swabbing COVID patients during the day.“I knew it was going to be hard, and it was hard. Dealing with patients that are suffering, their family members…that was really really tough. But I think we all came out stronger on the other side of it.”Most of Mellas’s patients were on ventilators and she called the experience “grim”, but she said she was also inspired during her time there by all the people that took up the call, as well.“People come together from all over the U.S. Not knowing anything about this illness,” she said.“And then [in] a complete disaster crisis, I mean crisis. It was wild. To see all of these health care providers come together and say, ‘What do we know, let’s pool our knowledge. Let’s try to figure this out. Let’s try to save lives’… that was just awesome. It was awesome.”The last days of May, Mellas’s sister drove her back to their parents’ house in Lockport. She wouldn’t be there long.Mellas, looking for a way to decompress, bought a one-way ticket to Portland.“‘I can’t leave the US, so I’ll just bike across the US. That seems like a really good thing to do,’” she said she told herself. “I really don’t have any other explanation, It was a very impetuous decision.”There wasn’t really a plan. Mellas had some friends she wanted to see and she had never been to Jackson Hole. So, she picked a few locations in the States and connected the dots in-between.“I had google maps, and I would look at the roads and kind of just figure it out the night before is essentially what I would do.”Biking anywhere between 100-130 miles per day, she rode all but seven days on the 40-day trip back to the East Coast.It was her faith she said that got her through her time in New York City and across the United States.“I was on my bike, I was just praying every day. I was like 'I could be in the ICU. I have two healthy lungs, I have a healthy body, healthy mind'… I am so blessed right now. I am so blessed.”And in the end, Mellas maintains she discovered the purpose of the trip as she continued and it really wasn’t about her, but about the people, she’s met in this journey.“I can’t emphasize that the people that I met complete strangers. They offered me food, they offered me showers, you needed a place to stay. I’d knock on people’s doors ‘can I sleep next to your cornfield?’ I met so many incredible people. People came together, people are rallying.
