Hurricane Dorian devastated the Bahamas, when it made landfall as a Category 5 storm this week. While the storm left its mark, she says everyone she knows who stayed on this island for Dorian is safe. Federal officials are considering requiring that all travelers — including American citizens — be photographed as they enter or leave the country as part of an identification system using facial-recognition technology.The Department of Homeland Security says it expects to publish a proposed rule next July. Officials did not respond to requests for more details.Critics are already raising objections.Sen. Edward Markey, D-Mass., said Tuesday he will introduce legislation to block the plan and prohibit U.S. citizens from being forced to provide facial-recognition information. He said a recent data breach at Customs and Border Protection shows that Homeland Security can’t be trusted with the information.Facial recognition is being tested by several airlines at a number of U.S. airports. American citizens are allowed to opt out of being photographed, although a 2017 audit by a federal watchdog agency found that few U.S. travelers exercised that right — barely more than one per flight.Federal law requires Homeland Security to put into place a system to use biometrics to confirm the identity of international travelers. Government officials have made no secret of their desire to expand the use of biometrics, which they say could identify potential terrorists and prevent fraudulent use of travel documents.Homeland Security announced the possibility of expanding biometrics to U.S. citizens in a recent, brief filing. When it comes to actually fixing her bike, however, she’s a little less confident.To help learn the tools of the trade, Onwuzuruoha comes to the Salt Lake City Bicycle Collective on Wednesday evenings during WTF Night, a program offering a safe earning environment for women, transgenders and femmes. And the idea is to give those groups a safe place to work in.“Oh, I love it,” Onwuzuruoha says. “It’s a great place for women, trans, and femme folk to work and not feel intimidated or frustrated.”WTF night has been happening in Salt Lake City, Utah since 2002. Salt Lake City Bicycle Collective Workers say it’s now becoming a nationwide movement with more bike shops across the country hosting events geared towards helping these groups. “It lets women and those that have normally had a wrench torn out of their hand or have been degraded as, ‘Oh, I’ll do that for you,'--it really allows them to build confidence to be able to maintain their own bike,” says Kendra Davis, a Salt Lake City Bicycle Collective volunteer.Davis and her team say they are helping put the power back in the hands of people who may feel marginalized by men in bike shops.
