SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Diego brewery is helping locals who find themselves in the kitchen more during California's stay at home order try their hands at bread making.Mission Brewery is offering small bags of dried yeast for free to community members in need."As a bread baker myself, I realized that yeast has become almost impossible to find on grocery shelves because of the COVID-19 crisis," says Mission Brewery owner Dan Selis. "I also realized that, as a brewery, we have excess yeast in supply and we can make some of that available to folks who want to bake their own bread at home."RELATED:San Diego distilleries making hand sanitizer amid coronavirus pandemicWho is open for business in San Diego during stay-at-home orderBags contain four tablespoons of yeast, which is enough for four, one-and-a-half-pound loaves of bread. The bags will be distributed one per person on a first-come, first-serve basis."We hope that providing yeast to San Diegans, enabling them to bake at home, will help folks all over the county to better weather this difficult time," Selis added. "No matter how you’re feeling, pulling a hot loaf of freshly baked bread out of your oven is sure to lift your spirits."Mission Brewery is located at 1441 L Street in downtown San Diego and opened Wednesday through Sunday, 12 p.m. to 7 p.m.The brewery's offer is the latest way local businesses are helping the community during the coronavirus pandemic. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego doctor is leading a new national study that tests drugs designed to help coronavirus patients. If you tested positive for coronavirus this summer, there was nowhere for you to go unless you were sick enough to end up in a hospital bed. The ACTIV-2 Study hopes to keep that from happening."So this trial is specifically designed to find those agents to keep people from going to the hospital," Dr. Davey Smith said. He is the Chief of Infectious Diseases at UC San Diego and the Protocol Chair for the study."If your symptoms started within ten days and your test is positive in seven days, then you are eligible for the study," Dr. Smith said.UCSD had their first patient mid-September. There are two test sites, one at UCSD and another at Kaiser's Zion Medical Center. Dr. Smith hopes to expand to six test sites."We want to test eight drugs over the next year, maybe more. There are lots of pharmaceutical companies making better and better drugs," he said the goal is to keep people healthy."If I were to get sick and I would have something to prevent me from getting sicker that's number 1. Then the next good thing is maybe instead of having an infusion we'll have a pill or we'll have an inhaler."He said they need 2,000 participants to test each drug and will use a placebo to measure it's effectiveness.A national study, led by San Diego."Hopefully we can do our home city proud," Dr. Smith said. 1442

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A record number of Americans filed for unemployment for the first time last week, leading to increased competition for the jobs that are available. The Labor Department reported Thursday that nearly 2.9 million workers are now seeking weekly payments from the government amid coronavirus-related closures. In San Diego County, the Workforce Partnership reports that it has received notice from 92 companies totaling roughly 12,000 workers — those notices, however, are voluntary, so the actual number could be much higher. RELATED: Will you qualify for a ,200 COVID-19 stimulus check? In all, the workers are largely from retailers, restaurants, and hotels, which comprise about 350,000 workers in the region. Those workers could receive up to 0 per week from the state of California, plus an additional 0 from the federal government's stimulus package. The bottom line: there are more people out of work now than jobs available. "I'm in an industry that is vulnerable to situations like this in the future, so what do I have to do about it to guarantee that this doesn't happen to me and my family again in the future? That's my question," said Sean O'Hara, who recently lost his job as general manager of the now-closed Splash Cafe at the Birch Aquarium in La Jolla, which is operated by the French Gourmet. "All the restaurants are closed that I can see. A couple of bakeries are staying open."RELATED: San Diego grocery stores hiring to address demand amid virusThe Workforce Partnership says there are jobs available in San Diego, beyond grocery stores and delivery services. Rachel Merfalen, the agency's director of business development, said drug stores, hardware stores, and home health services are also hiring and many of the jobs are flexible and entry level. "A lot of the influx in hiring that's happening right now is in response to this current situation, and so a lot of these positions, while some may continue to be permanent, I think a lot of them are temporary by nature," Merfalen said. RELATED: 3.3 million seek US jobless aid, nearly 5 times earlier highMerfalen said a great way applicants can separate themselves from the rest of the applicants is to speak to one of the partnership's jobs coaches, and have them help make the connection to employers. Applicants can sign up for those free services, and apply for jobs, at workforce.org/portal. 2405
