TAMPA, Fla. — While spring breakers head to beach communities, some Florida cities are enacting extra measures amid coronavirus concerns. In some areas of Fort Lauderdale, public beaches are closing daily at 4:30 p.m. and bars and restaurants must close before 10 p.m. Miami Beach reportedly enacted similar measures with an 11 p.m. curfew for bars and restaurants, as well as 4:30 p.m. beach closures, including on South Beach. Other states are closing bars and limiting restaurants to take-out only. Florida Governor Ron Desantis praised city leaders for the move and said he'd like to see other beach communities implement the same measures. "I think it’s important that these social distancing measures are implemented so that we are able to prevent infections from running completely out of hand," he said during a news conference Sunday. The concerns surrounding the virus didn't keep people away from Clearwater Beach over the weekend and on Monday, though. "I have auto immune diseases and I am a senior. But I really think as long as I’m very safe and I wash my hands constantly, I will be safe and my family will be safe," said Tricia Wood. SARASOTA, Fla. — Thousands gave thanks to a veteran for his service to our country Tuesday afternoon.Edward Karl Pearson of Naples died August 31 at the age of 80.The funeral home coordinating services says Pearson passed away with no immediate family to attend his funeral. Legacy Options invited the public to attend his internment at Sarasota National Cemetery.Those who never met Pearson attended the funeral anyways."He did not know me when he served his country and I don’t know him when I bury him, but we are one. He’s my family," said Cathy Strammer. Sarasota National Cemetery assistant director Ed Lyons who is also a veteran says he's glad so many people are reaching out and wanting to honor Mr. Pearson."It’s what these veterans deserve, its what this veteran deserves," said Lyons. SOUTH CAROLINA — The mother of Raniya Wright, the Walterboro, South Carolina, girl who died after a classroom fight, says Raniya's friends told her that a bully had been baiting the 10-year-old into a fight and caused her to hit her head on a bookshelf before she died.Speaking to "Good Morning America" on Monday, Ashley Wright said she had complained to Forest Hills Elementary School in the past about the girl involved in the altercation."I notified the school and spoke with her teacher at the time about the same person. She would just always come home saying this one girl picking on her," she told "GMA."Though school officials have released sparse details about the circumstances leading to Raniya's death, Ashley Wright said that her daughter's classmates told her the bully had been "bothering Raniya all day, wanting to fight her.""They were in the class," the mother told the morning show. "The girl came up behind her and was hitting her all in the head. How long, I don't know. She pushed her or rammed her head into the bookshelf."Raniya had no prior health issues, Wright said. School officials said there were no weapons involved in the March 25 fight.The school nurse called the mother, Wright told "GMA," and told her that Raniya had "been in an accident, a fight." She was OK, the nurse told her, but she was complaining about dizziness and having a headache, Wright recalled.Officials said they stopped the fight, and Raniya was taken to the school nurse's station. She was unconscious when paramedics arrived, and they took her to a nearby hospital, according to a sheriff's office report. She was later airlifted to the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, where she died two days after the fight.From the state Senate podium last week, Sen. Margie Bright Matthews of Walterboro said she's spoken to officials — including the substitute teacher in charge — and wanted to correct rumors surrounding Raniya's death."I've heard a lot of people say, 'Oh, they were kicking her. They ganged her.' None of that. That's so far from the truth — not even the banging of (her) head.
