(KGTV) — As Bird supplies San Diego streets with dockless scooter options — to the delight and disgust of some residents — the company will being selling its electric scooters directly to consumers.Bird unveiled its Bird One e-scooter this week, giving users the option to purchase their own Bird scooter for personal use.The company says the model was developed with an extended battery life and better protection than those Bird scooters initially rolled onto streets.RELATED: San Diego City Council passes scooter regulation packageMission Beach residents call for ban on e-scooters on Boardwalk“In 2018, we introduced the industry’s first scooter designed and engineered specifically for the sharing market, Bird Zero. Resulting from the commercial-grade aspects of Bird Zero, it lasts over 10 months in the sharing environment on average and is now profitable due to its increased lifespan and battery capacity,” said Travis VanderZanden, founder and CEO of Bird. “Bird One builds on the benefits and learnings of Bird Zero and is forecasted to last in the sharing environment for well over a year."Bird One will retail in a limited supply for ,299 and come in three colors: Jet black, dove white, and electric rose. It also includes 0 in rider credits.The scooter will reach up to 30 miles per charge and have GPS for owners to track and unlock their scooter and access to the "Bird Hunter" network, the company's team trained to recover missing scooters.The new model will also be rolled into Bird's sharing network for riders to rent, the company says. 1573

(KGTV) — An Idaho school district is investigating a school's teachers and staff after photos surfaced on social media showing them dressed as a border wall.Photos posted to Facebook showed teachers from Middleton Heights Elementary School dressed holding cardboard painted to look like a border wall, with the phrase "Make America Great Again."In another photo, staffers dressed in sombreros, ponchos, and fake mustaches.RELATED: Olympian Shaun White apologizes for offensive Halloween costumeBoth photos, posted to Middleton Heights's Facebook page, drew scorn online, forcing the school to remove the pictures, according to KTVB.Superintendent Josh Middleton posted a video to Facebook apologizing to parents and expressing his disappointment."I was shown those photos and [was] deeply troubled by the decision by our staff members to wear those costumes that are clearly insensitive and inappropriate," Middleton said. "We are better than this. We embrace all students. We have a responsibility to teach and reach all students, period."Our time right now is going to be devoted to investigating those events and those poor decisions that were made," Middleton added.It's unclear what type of disciplinary actions the teachers and staff face. Those in the pictures were publicly identified.Police patrols were increased at the school Friday for safety, KTVB reported. About 9.5 percent of Middleton's 7,400 population is Hispanic or Latino, according to U.S. Census data. 1507

(KGTV) — A high-speed pursuit took San Diego Police from Mid-City to La Mesa Thursday before the driver abandoned his vehicle and fled on foot.San Diego Police were pursuing the driver on Interstate 8 before he exited the highway at Spring St. in La Mesa, at about 5 p.m. The driver continued to drive in and out of traffic on surface streets before rear-ending a vehicle and fleeing the scene on foot. Police told 10News they tried to stop the man, later identified as Dontae Smith, 28, in connection to a burglary. During the chase, Smith ran into several cars before getting out and running across train tracks. Police began combing the trolley station at Date Ave. and Spring St. as well as a nearby residential area.At about 5:15 p.m., police took Smith into custody. Police say they found a gun in his car.Police says Smith is the suspect in a burglary reported in the 4400 block of Dawson Avenue. An officer tried to pull over a vehicle matching the description of a suspect vehicle leaving the scene. Instead they say Smith raced off.Smith is facing several charges including prowling, violation of parole, evading police, and other charges stemming from the pursuit.
