KANSAS CITY, Mo. —Memorial Day travel may be more difficult in 2018 than it has been in more than a dozen years, according to AAA.The company released its 2018 Memorial Day travel forecast ahead of the holiday known as the informal kickoff to summer.AAA said 2018 will see a near-record number of travelers, with more than 41.5 million people expected to take a trip.That’s nearly 5 percent more than 2017, with an additional 2 million people traveling in planes, trains and cars.According to INRIX, a global transportation analytics company, travel delays could be up to three times longer, becoming especially bad on the Thursday and Friday before the holiday as travelers mix with work-week commuters.Most travelers will take a car to their destination — 36.6 million to be exact. Airlines will see 3.1 million people, and the 1.8 million remaining will take trains, buses and cruise ships.Despite higher gas prices, travelers are still hitting the road. Johnson & Johnson announced it has paused its coronavirus vaccine trials on Monday following an “unexplained illness” among one of its participants.Johnson & Johnson stressed that adverse events during trials are expected, and a pause gives researchers an opportunity to review all of the medical information before moving forward with the trial. Johnson & Johnson added that it’s not always immediately known if the affected person received a placebo or a study treatment.Among the trials paused was Johnson & Johnson’s multi-country “ENSEMBLE” vaccine, which entered Phase 3 testing in September. Johnson & Johnson said last month that its goal was to seek an emergency use authorization approval in early 2021.The FDA noted that a vaccine candidate must be at least 50% effective to receive emergency use authorization. Vaccine candidates should include a median follow-up duration of at least two months after completion of the full vaccination regimen to help provide adequate information to assess a vaccine’s risk-benefit.According to the FDA, a typical Phase 3 trial would take one to three years.“NIH is committed to supporting several Phase 3 vaccine trials to increase the odds that one or more will be effective in preventing COVID-19 and put us on the road to recovery from this devastating pandemic,” said NIH Director Francis S. LA JOLLA (CNS) - The city of San Diego will close Children's Pool beach Saturday in preparation of harbor seal pupping season, city officials announced Friday.The city began closing the beach in 2014, spurred by environmental activists concerned that beachgoers were disturbing the young pinnipeds. The city has been tied up in litigation for most of the time since then, dealing with suits from a group called Friends of the Children's Pool and other beach access advocates who claimed the closures violated the state Coastal Act and the federal Marine Mammal Protection Act.In June of this year, a state appeals court ruled in favor of the city, allowing the closures to continue.At the time, beach access advocates threatened to take the complaint to the state Supreme Court, but the matter hasn't moved that far yet.The city opened the beach in 1932 as a refuge for inexperienced swimmers due to a seawall that keeps out oncoming ocean waves. Harbor seals began convening on the beach in the 1990s and have since used the relatively calm beach area to birth and raise seal pups. California Coastal Commission officials have also suggested that the water is unsafe due to the seals and their excrement, offering another reason for residents to stay away from the beach for the next several months.The beach will be closed through May 15, 2019 to accommodate the seals and their pups. City park rangers and lifeguards will monitor the beach throughout the rest of winter and the duration of spring to keep both members of the public and local wildlife safe. 1567
