SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego Gulls coach Dallas Eakins was Monday named the coach of its NHL parent team, the Anaheim Ducks.Eakins coached the Gulls throughout their four seasons in the American Hockey League, guiding them to a 154-95-23 record and three Calder Cup playoff berths. They reached the Western Division finals in the recently concluded 2018-19 season.The Gulls had the best record in the AHL's Pacific Division since its inception in the 2015-16 season.The 52-year-old Eakins called his hiring as the Ducks' coach ``a tremendous honor for my family.''``I am truly humbled,'' Eakins said. ``It was a privilege to serve as head coach of the San Diego Gulls during our first four seasons and I look forward to build off that success here in Anaheim.''Eakins replaces Randy Carlyle, who was fired on Feb. 10. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego City Council members Monica Montgomery and Georgette Gomez called on state officials Monday to open an independent investigation into the in-custody death of 24-year-old Aleah Jenkins. Montgomery and Gomez requested the inquiry in a joint statement in response to a news conference last Friday from District Attorney Summer Stephan in which she released body-camera video of Jenkins' time in police custody and said that Jenkins' death was caused by a lack of judgment rather than criminal negligence. The two officials called on the state's Department of Justice and Attorney General Xavier Becerra to open an investigation into the circumstances of Jenkins' death. Montgomery and Gomez also urged the San Diego Police Department to reform its policies regarding the treatment of people in custody. Chase D. Sweetwood, 18, was among those killed in the July 30 maritime training mission when the vehicle they were in took on water and sank.Family members say the Portland resident was born in San Diego and grew up in Chula Vista, and died one day before his 19th birthday.Sweetwood was honored during a Friday morning funeral that included military honors and a procession from the Patriot Guard Riders.Eight Camp Pendleton-based Marines, including Sweetwood, and a Navy sailor died in the mishap. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County had the fourth-most homeless residents in the U.S. this year, according to a report released Monday by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. San Diego County's data was taken from the 2018 Point in Time Study, completed Jan. 26. The region had an official count of 8,576 homeless residents during the three-hour window in which the count took place, behind Seattle/King County in Washington, Los Angeles County and New York City, which topped the list with 78,676 homeless residents. According to the report, roughly 5,000 members of San Diego's homeless population are unsheltered, living on the street, in a vehicle or in a hand-built structure such as a tent. Another 3,500 homeless residents were sheltered at the time of the study, living in emergency shelters, safe havens and transitional housing. The county's count could be higher than 9,000 homeless residents, however, because the San Diego Regional Task Force on the Homeless did not count residents in recreational vehicles and some residents in shelters. County officials and homeless advocates believe the actual homeless population could total as high as 9,220, but the true count has remained opaque since the task force, which oversees the Point in Time County, announced the error May 31. Overall, California leads all other states with 129,972 homeless individuals, followed by New York at 91,897. At the time the counts were completed in January, California laid claim to 24 percent of the country's total homeless population. Combined with New York, Florida, Texas and Washington, roughly half of the country's homeless population was clustered in five states. Homelessness in California has declined in recent years despite the robust total. The state's homeless population fell by 1,560, or 1.2 percent, from 2017 to 2018 and 9,014, or 6.5 percent, from 2007 to 2018.
