ALPINE COUNTY, Calif. – One small county in California has become a safe haven from the coronavirus. There’s only been one reported case of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, but now, hundreds of visitors from across the country are going there to vacation.“I have never seen this many people here,” said Deanna Jang, the owner of the general store in the county.Business owners like Jang worry the visitors they rely on may bring more problems than profit. “It’s been very good for business, it’s scary though because you just don’t know what’s going to happen,” said Jang.Jang’s family has owned a local general store for decades. She’s nervously watching as cases rise in counties all around hers. She fears a summer shutdown in this tourist town could take her family business with it.“You need to make your year’s income here in two months because the rest of the months you just kind of get by,” she said. “It’s scary, it’s like, ‘What does this mean for next year, and the year after?’ Because we’d have to recover from that.”“It’s sort of a double-edged sword of wanting to get our economy started and worrying that the people who are supporting the economy are going to bring COVID into our community,” said Nichole Williamson of the Alpine County Health Department.Williamson said the worry has locals considering what would typically be unthinkable there. “We have had people who work in the short-term rental business tell us they would not be upset if we limited short-term rentals right now,” she said. One driving concern: the county has few medical resources.“We have no private physicians, no hospitals, and we have a two-day a week family clinic with a nurse practitioner, and she was called up into active duty in the Army,” said Williamson.First responders are also in short supply. “If we had a few law enforcement and a few firefighters exposed, we’d be in a very vulnerable situation,” said Williamson. But with this vulnerability comes a choice: to fear the virus or face it. “You just have to learn to live with it,” said Jang. For hotel owner John Flannigan, there is no choice. He said he is making safety his top priority to make sure his business can stay open. “The economy is in its worst case,” said Flannigan. “It’s worse than 2001 and 2008 combined, times ten, so I don’t think we should be hurting anyone’s ability to make a living. I think we should be figuring out solutions so they can make a living.” Flannigan runs Sorenson’s Resort and has moved all his dining to be outdoor, open air and is making sure guests have space to spread out and social distance. As worried as many community members are, they hope they can keep business going safely.“It’s not about me. It’s not about you. It’s about everyone,” said Jang. 2769

All I have to say is the tragedies amassing this year have only been made more profound by the loss of #ChadwickBoseman. What a man, and what an immense talent. Brother, you were one of the all time greats and your greatness was only beginning. Lord love ya. Rest in power, King.— Mark Ruffalo (@MarkRuffalo) August 29, 2020 332

After spending 23 years in prison for a crime he did not commit, Nevest Coleman is back at work with the Chicago White Sox.Coleman, then a 25-year-old groundskeeper with the White Sox, was convicted of the 1994 rape and murder of a Chicago woman and sentenced to life in prison without parole. He was freed last year after DNA found on the victim was linked to a serial rapist.Friends and family contacted the White Sox after his release to help him get his old job back, CNN affiliate WGN reported. The team said it was grateful that "justice has been carried out for Nevest" and said they were happy to welcome him back to the team as one of its groundskeepers.Coleman told WGN that he watched Sox games while he was in prison and would see his former colleagues scramble to protect the field during rain delays. Two of his friends who are still on the grounds crew were there to greet him with big hugs on Monday morning when he arrived for his first day back on the job.He was issued a new uniform and hat. He then put on a big yellow rain suit to pressure wash the sidewalk and got to work.A lot has changed while Coleman was away. The stadium has had extensive renovations and is now known as Guaranteed Rate Field instead of Comiskey Park. One thing, however, has remained constant for Coleman."I was in a situation where I felt comfortable here and everybody here was family to me," he told WGN.  1413

After losing a child to a drug overdose, one mother prepares to save others through a program to teach people how to handle the anti-overdose drug Narcan."Maybe I'll be at the right place at the right time for somebody else," Pat Jorgensen said.Pat's daughter, Tiffany, died five years ago at the age of 29. She's left raising Tiffany's daughter."Not a day goes by that I don't think of her and miss her," Pat said. "When someone gets engrossed in a drug addiction, it's really hard coming out of it. It's the hardest thing to get off of. As her mother, I will always feel like what did I do? Maybe I did something wrong? It's been a very hard road. The whole family has been through a lot. It's not something you just get over."Pat and her son were among dozens who showed up to receive free Narcan, and training on how to use it to potentially save a life. The training session was held at the Water Tower in Milwaukee's Bay View neighborhood Wednesday night. In this case, the Aids Resource Center of Wisconsin (ARCW) has a Prevention Department that provided the free Narcan and training. The organization often gets requests from community and church group to host training sessions at no cost.Everyone who attended the meeting went home with three syringes and three vials of Narcan, as well as reminders on how to properly use it. 1349

ALPINE, Calif. (KGTV) - The Alpine Union School District reporting its first positive COVID-19 case since in-person learning began a month ago.Around 9:30 a.m. Thursday morning, staff at Boulder Oaks Elementary received a call from a parent."Heard from a parent their child was in fact positive for COVID-19," said District superintendent Rich Newman.Newman says immediately, contact tracing protocols kicked in. The student was part of a hybrid-learning group, and Thursday was a distance learning day. Within an hour, school and school district officials had mapped out the student's contacts since Monday."We were able to trace the student from the classroom seat to the restroom they used, to their seat at lunch, to the health office -- their path on campus," said Newman. The final tally: 10 students, a teacher and a support staffer who had been within six feet and spent 15 minutes or more with the student. An hour later, the school was providing the list of contacts to county health officials, while staff began calling the impacted parents and students. Electrostatic cleaning was done in affected locations. Newman says the contact tracing was effective because of extensive planning. Students are asked to stick close to their classroom grouping throughout the day."We were able to track their day because we've assigned locations for lunch, we've assigned restrooms to use. We know when they went to health office and which areas they went for outside breaks," said Newman.Once the tracing was complete, the impacted students and staff were asked to quarantine at home for 14 days and switch to distance learning. The affected staff were given COVID-19 tests.Newman believes the breadth of their COVID-19 measures will make a big difference."We hope these protocols will ensure, when these cases happen, we will stay open for in-person learning," said Newman.Boulder Oaks Elementary has about 500 students and 50 staff. The school district offers drive-thru COVID-19 testing for its staff every two weeks. 2027
