John Pregulman is on a mission to ensure that those who survived the Holocaust are not forgotten. Pregulman is occupied with documenting the estimated 200,000 still-living Holocaust survivors. “Their biggest fear is that they’ll be forgotten,” Pregulman said as he was surrounded by hundreds of portraits he took of survivors taped and pinned onto four walls.Among those Pregulman has documented was Mildred Ferro, 93, who said she was age 11 when she moved to the United States. Pregulman recently visited a senior living community to capture Ferro’s picture and story.Pregulman’s became motivated when he learned that many survivors worry that their story will be forgotten in history. What started as a one-time gig, taking photos at an event outside of Chicago five years ago, has turned into almost an obsession.“I took their pictures, they shared their stores, and I just became completely enthralled with these amazing people who I expected to be sad and unable to get past what had happened, and yet they were the happiest most positive and accomplished people I had met in a very long time,” he said.In hearing their stories, Pregulman and his wife soon learned a disturbing statistic: roughly one-in-three Holocaust survivors live in poverty.“Dignity had to be the centerpiece of everything,” his wife Amy Israel Pregulman said. “They deserve that.”They’ve started a non-profit called 1407

This family took in a little boy and gave him a lifesaving gift.Nicole Alles and her husband have been fostering children for more than a decade. A few years ago, the couple decided to take a break and decide if this is what they wanted to continue doing.That’s when they received a call about a baby boy that no one was willing to take in.“WE got a call for him in December and they couldn’t find anyone to take him in because of all of his medical complications,” said Nicole.Sebastian was born in October of 2014 with a long list of health concerns including end stage renal, collapsed lungs and stage 4 chronic kidney disease."I mean the biggest issue was that his kidneys weren't working and we knew we were going to need to start him on dialysis before he even left the hospital,” said Dr. Myda Khalid, children’s kidney doctor at Riley Hospital.Sebastian would eventually need a new kidney.Nicole, a home healthcare nurse, knew she could help Sebastian. The couple took him in and she did his dialysis at home."We took him in under the premise that he would probably go back home soon, but that did not happen,” said Nicole.After four months, Sebastian’s biological parents discontinued their parental rights.In 2016, the Alles family legally adopted him.His two foot tall box of medical records was delivered to their home shortly after.That’s when Nicole learned she and her newly adopted son shared a blood type.After waiting for Sebastian to be strong enough for a transplant, Nicole went through extensive testing and learned she was a match.“When they found out I was a tissue match for him that was when we were just so excited because that just meant so much to us that I was able to give him the kidney,” said Nicole.Today Sebastian is one year post operation. He’s healthier than ever.His kidney transplant, one of many successful surgeries he’s had to improve his quality of life.“To look at him, you really wouldn’t know he’s been through as much as he’s been through,” said Nicole.Nicole believes Sebastian was meant to come into her life so she could be his mother and his donor.“Being able to save his life... it makes me very emotional, very fortunate... very blessed... very happy because I know that I was a part of that,” said Alles. 2346

INDIANAPOLIS — The shiny red and white truck was supposed to be shipped to Anderson, Indiana, last month.Shawn Abernathy and his fiance Tiffany found the truck listed on Facebook Marketplace by a page called AMS Car Sales."It was a 1997 Ford F250 it looked brand new. I mean they sent us a video of it it ran beautiful," Abernathy said.After several emails with the owner, who claimed to be a widow, they paid ,200."They asked us to get six eBay cards at 0 a piece to do the down payment. The agreement was we would get the down payment paid and the vehicle would be delivered," Abernathy said.Abernathy was then asked to pay even more money."When we declined they said hold on we will put you over to the financial department and the phone went dead," Abernathy said. "I was pretty upset. I buckled. It tore me up. It destroyed our Christmas. We're still trying to recover from it. Twelve-hundred dollars is a pretty good loss."The manager of AMS Cars on the west side of Indianapolis at 10th Street and Raceway Road said his business has received thousands of phone calls from customers asking about vehicles they found on fake Facebook posts. Their message is if the car is not on their official website, it is not available."A lot of angry customers," AMS Cars manager Sam Sodhi said. "A majority of our time, about 5-7 people that work here go in every day to explain to people whether they are on on the phone email, text message, walk in, 'Hey, kindly report it. Please help us.'"Sodhi said AMS Cars received more than 8,000 phone calls in December about cars they don't have in stock. They posted a scam warning online and recorded a message that plays when customers call their office.Sodhi said he wants customers to do their research, Google the cars VIN number, know the difference between the two Facebook pages and always check their website to verify the vehicle.Scripps station WRTV in Indianapolis is waiting on a response from Facebook to see if anything can be done about the AMS Car Sales page.
