SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The mother of a Southern California girl diagnosed with rat-bite fever is sharing her story at a San Diego hospital Friday to educate other parents about the danger. Rat-bite fever is a potentially deadly infection spread through contact with domestic rats. 8-year-old Cali from Menifee contracted the disease when the rat’s saliva came into contact with an open wound, according to Rady Children’s Hospital officials. Cali has eczema on her fingers which may have contributed to the situation, a doctor said.Rat-bite fever is a bacterial disease which can cause a rash, fever, and body aches. The illness started Friday night, said Cali's mother Sabrina. By Sunday, Cali had a fever of 104.6 degrees. She lost the ability to use her hands and arms and had a whole-body rash."Really, really scary. Really hard to watch," said Sabrina.Cali's family bought two rats, Shell and Onyx, from a feed store about two years ago with no warning about the potential of rat-bite fever.Doctors recommended the family get rid of their rats."We didn't want to do it," said Sabrina. “It’s not a fun thing to tell your kid you’ve got to get rid of your best friend."Cali's mother had a recommendation for other parents."Just know that this can happen," she said. "Wash your hands."Watch the news conference at Rady Children's Hospital: 1344

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Downtown Central Courthouse plans to resume jury trials in two weeks after a six-month postponement during the shutdown, but there are concerns about the massive backlog of cases and keeping jurors safe. Non-jury trials are currently in progress through a remote virtual process.“I do have an incredible backlog, not only in criminal but also in civil cases,” said San Diego Superior Court Presiding Judge Lorna Alksne on Monday. So far, 900 jury duty summonses have been sent out for telephonic standby for in-person appearances in groups of 70 people. “The jury lounge [holds] 500 to 600 people but instead of that were going to bring in 70 [people and] socially distance them,” she added. Those people who are selected for jury will sit in courtrooms which have been retrofitted with protective measures like plexiglass barriers. Judge Alksne said there around about 2,400 criminal cases ready for trial that must be reset. Beyond that, there are thousands of other criminal proceedings to get to. “There's about 17,000 other things that need to be reset before they can even get to a trial,” she added.Civil cases are another obstacle. A spokesperson for the Courthouse confirmed that there are approximately 54,000 civil cases that are pending. There are about 2,800 that are ready to go to trial but Judge Alksne said Monday that civil jury trials likely won't resume until sometime in 2021.“The only way that I'm going to beat this backlog is if jurors come in for jury service so if you feel like you're able to serve, we would ask you to respond to the summons and come into court and help us get the jury trials started again,” she added. She noted that civil bench trials will start in mid-October and in-person arraignments will start on November 1st. 1792

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The city of San Diego is one step closer to creating a regional energy company that would serve as an alternative to San Diego Gas and Electric. The city's Environment Committee voted 3-1 Thursday to advance the framework for the energy company to the full City Council, which it will consider Tuesday, The proposal, called Community Choice Aggregation, would include the city of San Diego and other entities such as Chula Vista, Encinitas, Imperial Beach and La Mesa. It would be managed under what is called a Joint Powers Authority. San Diego Gas and Electric would still deliver the energy, but the JPA would decide where it comes from. The city has previously estimated that it could save customers 5 percent under their SDG&E bills. Customers would be automatically enrolled, and would pay SDG&E exit fees (they can opt out of enrollment). The entity could help the city reach its climate goal of 100 percent renewable energy by 2035. It needs to get its proposal to the state Public Utilities Commission by the end of the year in order to start service in 2021. 1103

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The 10-day Sturgis motorcycle rally held in August led to more than 266,000 new coronavirus cases, according to a new study from San Diego State University. The study, released this week, says upwards of 460,000 people converged on Sturgis, a South Dakota city of 7,000, causing a bump in Coronavirus infections across the US. "Large crowds, coupled with minimal mask-wearing and social distancing by attendees, raised concerns that this event could serve as a COVID-19 'super spreader,'" said the study, which did conclude that the rally was a super spreader event.Researchers from San Diego State's Center for Health Economics and Policy Study used anonymized cell phone data to track where attendees came from, then traced it back to their counties. They found that the counties that had the highest numbers of Sturgis attendees saw a 7% to 12% increase in coronavirus cases. The study also said that CDC data shows that cases in Meade County, South Dakota, where the rally is held, increased 6 to 7 cases per 1,000 population a month after the event started. Descriptive evidence suggests these effects may be muted in states with stricter mitigation policies (i.e., restrictions on bar/restaurant openings, mask-wearing mandates)," the study says.In all, the study says that led to more than 266,000 new COVID-19 cases nationwide. The study says these cases accounted for an additional .2 billion in health costs, enough to pay each attendee ,000 not to have attended the rally. South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem called the study fiction, noting it was not peer-reviewed and based on "incredibly faulty assumptions." Her statement did not elaborate on what those assumptions were and what she considered faulty."This report isn’t science; it’s fiction. Under the guise of academic research, this report is nothing short of an attack on those who exercised their personal freedom to attend Sturgis,” Noem's statement read in part. “Predictably, some in the media breathlessly report on this non-peer reviewed model, built on incredibly faulty assumptions that do not reflect the actual facts and data." 2137

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The government is warning consumers not to get duped by fraudulent coronavirus test kits.As COVID-19 fears spread, the U.S. FDA is warning Americans about fake "diagnostic, prevention and treatment claims" the agency is beginning to see appear in the market.Currently, there is no approved home testing kit for coronavirus available for consumers, according to the FDA.RELATED:Q and A: Food safety and the coronavirus diseaseEight arrested, accused of price-gouging during COVID-19 emergencyCOVID-19 patient in Kentucky went through week-long struggle to be tested"The FDA has not authorized any test that is available to purchase for testing yourself at home for COVID-19. The FDA sees the public health value in expanding the availability of COVID-19 testing through safe and accurate tests that may include home collection, and we are actively working with test developers in this space," the agency said in a release. The problem with the fake kits, other than being fraudulent, is they could delay consumers from seeking medical care. Anyone who believes they have symptoms resembling the novel coronavirus (which are fever, coughing, and shortness of breath) is asked to contact their medical provider, who will help determine if they need to be tested."We have already identified and issued warning letters to companies found selling and promoting fraudulent items, and we expect additional such actions will be forthcoming," the FDA said.Anyone who believes they have found a vendor selling fake testing kits can report them to the FDA. 1570
