The top federal prosecutor in Connecticut is assisting Attorney General Bill Barr in his review of the genesis of the 2016 Russia investigation, according to a source familiar with the review.US attorney John Durham has been tapped to help Barr, but is not acting as a special counsel like Robert Mueller, the source said, and will be looking at whether intelligence collection activities by the US government prior to election day were lawful. And while Barr has said publicly that he's not launching a full blown investigation into the FBI's handling of the matter, Durham's role -- first reported by The New York Times -- does provide one of the clearest signals to date of the seriousness of an inquiry President Donald Trump had called for repeatedly.Barr's concerns about surveillance of the Trump campaign were first revealed during testimony before the House Appropriations Committee last month when he suggested, controversially, 950
Tropical Storm Dorian continues to gain strength and has winds of 70 mph as of 11 a.m. Wednesday. The storm is moving toward the northwest at about 13 mph and this general motion is expected to continue during the next few days. It is near St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands and expected to become a hurricane soon.Computer models show Tropical Storm Dorian now has a very fast increase in strength as it heads up through the Bahamas. The forecast shows Dorian becoming a Category 3 hurricane before decreasing some in strength before making landfall somewhere between South Carolina and South Florida on Sunday or early Monday morning.Dorian is then forecast to move to the east of the Turks and Caicos and the southeastern Bahamas on Thursday, and near or to the east of the central and northwestern Bahamas on Friday and Saturday.Wednesday morning's models are still a little all over the place when it comes to the five-day forecast for Dorian. Some models taking Dorian up toward the Carolinas, some toward the Jacksonville area, and one very reliable model bringing Dorian into our viewing area on Sunday. All the models show Dorian becoming a hurricane and some much stronger than others.Once Dorian clears Puerto Rico later Wednesday, the models will begin to come into much better agreement.A Hurricane Watch is in effect for: * Puerto RicoA Hurricane Warning is in effect for: * Vieques and Culebra * U.S. Virgin Islands * British Virgin IslandsA Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for:* Dominican Republic from Isla Saona to SamanaThis story was originally published by 1590

The White House's coronavirus task force provided an update on the administration's response to the pandemic as the number of confirmed cases in the U.S. rose to about 3,000 on Sunday.During brief comments, President Donald Trump praised the Federal Reserve's decision to slash interest rates to nearly zero, saying he was "very happy." Trump had pressured the apolitical agency for days to slash interest rates in the hopes of boosting the economy."You won't hear anything bad from me (about the fed) unless it's a few months from now," Trump said.Trump also addressed the latest information from the CDC, which now confirms that more than 3,000 Americans are confirmed to have contracted the disease, with estimates for those infected much higher.Trump left the podium without taking questions. He did not address his test for COVID-19; the White House said Saturday that Trump had tested negative for the virus, despite the fact that he came into contact with at least two people that have since tested positive for the disease.Trump administration officials also addressed the thousands of Americans who are returning to the country amid a 3--day travel ban to Europe. The influx of passengers arriving in America resulted in 1242
There was no question when Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter retired in 2014 that he would be a Hall of Famer. The only question was whether he would be a unanimous selection. On Tuesday, the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum announced that Jeter and former Rockies and Expos hitter Larry Walker have been inducted into the Hall of Fame. Jeter was just one vote shy of becoming the first position player to be unanimously elected to the Hall of Fame, and only the second Hall of Famer in history to receive 100% votes. Former Yankees closer Mariano Rivera remains the only player to receive 100% of the vote from baseball writers. Jeter had 396 out of 397 possible votes.Rivera and Yankees won five World Series together with the Yankees. Jeter is No. 6 all-time in hits; No. 11 all-time in runs scored; and a five-time Gold Glove winner.Walker was a five-time All Star and was the 1997 MVP. Walker made it into Hall of Fame after being on the ballot for 10 years. He obtained 76% of the vote, 1% more needed for induction, after garnering 54% of the vote last year.Just missing election was Curt Schilling who failed to reach the 75% threshold for induction for the eighth straight year. He was just shy with 70% of the vote. Also failing to make the ballot was pitcher Roger Clemens and outfielder Barry Bonds. Despite having statistics worthy of Hall induction, both players' careers were marred by allegations that they used performance enhancing drugs. Clemens and Bonds both earned 61% of the vote. 1520
