SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Hate crimes throughout San Diego County and across the state are rising at an alarming rate, according to new reports.Hate crimes between 2015 and 2017 rose 27 percent in San Diego County alone, a new report published in Law Enforcement Quarterly states.Statewide, hate crimes rose 44 percent between 2014 and 2017.A report from California’s Attorney General shows that San Diego County saw 95 hate crime incidents in 2017. That compared with 84 hate crimes countywide in 2016 and 72 in 2015.According to documents, anti-Semitic hate crime rose nearly 27 percent from 2016 to 2017 statewide. Hate crimes involving racial bias increased 16 percent within the same amount of time.The statistics come amid recent tragedies around the country, including a shooting at a synagogue in Pittsburgh Saturday that left 11 people dead. RELATED: Sign outside UCSD Jewish student center defacedThe rise in hate crimes also coincide with recent events in San Diego. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Heavy rain over the last few years has brought an unexpected splash of color to portions of San Diego.For the last month or so, Rainbow Eucalyptus trees have been shedding their bark, revealing a multi-colored trunk."It's outstanding," says Peter Fritsch, who walks by a handful of the trees along Sports Arena Boulevard. "Over time, the new bark will have those varying shades of color."According to the city, there are Rainbow Eucalyptus trees in Balboa Park, Sports Arena, the San Diego Zoo and parts of Mission Bay. He'd like to see more planted throughout the city."It's something we should embrace. It's kind of San Diego's tree," he says. "You see pictures of LA and they have palm trees. Ours is the Eycalyptus. Throughout California, 5.42 million people are expected to take a trip and, in Southern California alone, 3.35 million people are projected to travel. Among Southern Californians, 2.78 million people are expected to travel by car and another 340,000 people plan to travel by plane. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Hospital beds are filling up quickly with available capacity at zero in Southern California.ICE Nurse Peter Sidhu is overwhelmed. The Los Angeles County RN says their hospitals are on the brink of their limits.“We’re having an influx of patients like I’ve never seen before,” said Sidhu. “We’re running out of space. We’re converting any and every room into a patient room.”He feels more protected after getting the vaccine Thursday but says being short-staffed is a whole other threat. Sidhu also serves as treasurer for the UNAC/UHCP nurses union. He says hospitals have been facing systemic nursing shortages since the early 2000s.“You’ll be lucky to even get a restroom break. You’re on your feet, you’re running, patients are being intubated,” said Sidhu. “We don’t have enough staff. We didn’t have enough staff to take care of our patients before we had COVID.”California groups counties into five regions as part of the new stay-at-home order. On Thursday, the Southern California region available ICU capacity hit zero, even though availability for San Diego County is about 16%. That’s in part because other counties contribute to our region’s total. Inyo County only has two ICU beds open as of Dec. 18. Imperial County has no beds left.“You can open up empty wings, you can convert auditoriums, you can see what some places are doing which is parking structures and tents,” said Sidhu. “But, you can’t replace nurses.”While there are still some ICU beds open in San Diego, they’re filling up quickly. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Drug maker Moderna announced it had started the process of testing its COVID-19 vaccine on children ages 12 to 17. The company dosed the first adolescents Thursday.“I think all of us are interested in getting control of this pandemic, and I think one of the opportunities here is to be able to immunize children also,” said Dr. Stephen Spector. He leads Moderna’s Phase 3 clinical trial on adults at UC San Diego. “We’re interested in participating; we haven’t heard yet from the sponsor.”Spector is also a pediatrician and said generally, children tolerate viral vaccines better than adults. This study will answer many important questions.“Are there possible adverse effects in children that weren’t seen in adults, and will they be more severe?” he said.“The primary concerns now are whether or not the vaccine will be safe in children, and whether it will provide the same immune response in children as was seen in adults.”Spector said once those factors have been determined, the vaccine can likely be approved to be used on children.“Because we already know the vaccine works in adults, given the immune response will be a determinant of vaccine efficacy, you see that in children, then the vaccine can be approved for them as well,” he explained.Data released by Moderna showed the vaccine efficacy against COVID-19 was 94 percent in adult participants, and the company has requested emergency use authorization from the FDA.“I’m not going to minimize that there have been some side effects, but they’re usually short-lasting, maybe a day or two of three days at most,” he said. “The fact that the vaccine is over 90 percent effective really puts it in the same realm as measles, rubella, and other kinds of vaccines that have been tremendously successful in containing viral infections.”Moderna will split the participants into two separate groups, half getting the placebo and the other half getting two vaccine shots 28 days apart.The company hopes to enroll 3,000 young people in the study, with a goal of generating data in the spring of 2021 and potentially vaccinating kids shortly after, in time for the next school year.“At this point, there are convincing data that the vaccine works, the FDA will review that data next week, and the expectation is there will be an emergency use approval by the end of next week for the vaccine,” said Spector. 2389
