Jared Johnstun is lucky enough to have not one, but two furry sidekicks.“Yes, you’re good boys aren’t you?” Johnstun said to his two goldendoodles sitting beside him on the floor. “They’re a little tired today too.”Jared Johnston knows a thing or two about being worn out.“I’m a physician who works mainly in the intensive care unit,” Johnstun said. “I’m a pulmonary critical care doctor.”Since COVID hit, the doctor has been going non-stop.“You know, for 10 days or 12 days in a row, I’m in the hospital every day, some days I’m there for 12 hours,” Johnstun said.As a doctor, he’s seen it all but for him, the pandemic is different.“It was definitely a shock to me,” he said.About two months in, Dr. Johnstun, used to living alone, suddenly felt like something was wrong.“You know, I just realized that I wasn’t doing well,” he said.So, he made a move he never expected.“I’m a 40-year-old ICU doctor and I live with my parents,” he said with a chuckle.Johnstun now lives with his mom and dad near the hospital he works at.“I tried to do all this by myself initially and I just couldn’t do it,” Johnstun said.He’s not alone.“In medicine, there has been this long tradition of everything is fine and we got this,” said Dr. Amy Locke, the Chief Wellness Officer at the University of Utah Hospital.Doctors and nurses are facing challenges unlike many have ever seen in their career. That is why hospitals like the University of Utah are turning to wellness officers.“It’s kind of like counseling,” Locke said. “You know, checking in, making sure people are doing OK and that they’re able to access resources.”At the University of Utah’s resiliency center, their resources are being used more than ever.“Our interactions with people have more than doubled over the last six months,” Locke said.Doctors like Johnstun are applauding the efforts made by hospital groups throughout the country.“In general, the mental health of the physicians and nurses and all health care workers is something that really hasn’t been talked about.”He said talking to other health care workers on the COVID-19 front lines has been eye opening.“We’re talking about what is it going to look like in 10 years when you have a whole generation of doctors and nurses who have PTSD?” Johnstun said.As for Johnstun, he has found healing in being around family, practicing yoga, meditating and exercising.Even after all he has been through in the past eight months, he believes he’s exactly where he should be.“(Doctors) have found a calling and a purpose in fighting COVID and taking care of the people who have COVID,” he said. “I couldn’t imagine myself doing anything else. SAN DIEGO (AP) — The Trump administration said Thursday that it ended special considerations to generally release pregnant women charged with being in the United States illegally while their cases wind through immigration court.U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said it scrapped a policy that took effect in August 2016 that pregnant women should be released unless they met limited criteria that required them to be held by law, such as serious criminal histories, or if there were "extraordinary circumstances."The new policy, which took effect in December but wasn't announced until Thursday, gives no blanket special consideration to pregnancy, though the agency says each case will be reviewed individually and women in their third trimester will generally be released.The move is the latest effort to scrap immigration policies created in the final two years of Barack Obama's administration. Shortly after Trump took office, rules that generally limited deportations to convicted criminals, public safety threats and recent border crossers were lifted, making anyone in the country illegally vulnerable. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 21-year-old man who fatally stabbed a transient in Ocean Beach was sentenced today to 15 years to life in state prison. Noah Mitchell Jackson, 21, was convicted earlier this year of second-degree murder for the June 22, 2017, killing of 65-year-old Walter ``Ras'' Riley, an Ohio native nicknamed ``the Incense Man'' due to his practice of selling aromatic burning sticks at local farmers' markets. Officers sent just before 12:30 a.m. to the 1900 block of Bacon Street found Riley lying on the sidewalk with stab wounds to his upper body. He was pronounced dead at UCSD Medical Center. Deputy District Attorney Michael Reilly said the victim was stabbed five times, with the killing blow entering his back, breaking several ribs and puncturing his heart. RELATED: Police search for man suspected in death of homeless man in Ocean BeachJackson confessed to a friend that he stabbed Riley, according to the prosecutor, who said Jackson told the friend, ``I got that guy. I stabbed that (expletive).'' ``Those are the words of a murderer,'' Reilly told jurors. Reilly said that some time after the killing, Jackson had a friend drive him to Kellogg's Beach, where Jackson threw the murder weapon and his cellphone into the water. Police divers were not able to recover the knife or the phone. Jackson's attorney, Eugene Iredale, alleged the friend was pressured by police to incriminate Jackson and was offered immunity for his testimony in the trial. However, Iredale denied this suspected motive, as he said his client had substance abuse problems that led him to make several ``completely random statements'' to friends following the date of the killing. The attorney said the spitting incident involving Jackson's sister never occurred and ``God only knows'' why Jackson said it had. Iredale said police originally had 20 to 30 suspects, but centered on Jackson due to a 911 call made about 90 minutes prior to Riley's stabbing. In that call, a recording of which was played for the jury, the mother of one of Jackson's friends said Jackson was at her home displaying erratic behavior and saying he wanted to commit suicide. He'd just gotten into an argument with his girlfriend, then left the house, she told a dispatcher. Iredale alleged the clothing description she provided police -- a white sweatshirt and jeans -- vaguely resembled the attire of a suspect captured on surveillance footage running through Ocean Beach following the killing. That footage was publicly released shortly after Riley's death. Iredale said the man in the footage was Riley's killer, but looked nothing like his client.
