SCRIPPS RANCH (KGTV): At the top of a trail along Semillon Boulevard and Pomerado Road, right next to a sign that reads, "No Dumping - 00 fine," sits a giant pile of wood chips.It's been there for years, growing and shrinking in size. But right now, people who live nearby say it's as big as they can remember."Yeah, it is a little larger than normal," says Douglas Burns, who lives in a home next to the pile.The wood chips are from trees cut down by maintenance workers in the area. The work is part of the Scripps Ranch Civic Association's maintenance contract with the city. The workers take the leaves to the dump but leave the wood chips behind.Bob Ilko, the President of the SRCA, says it saves money on beautification projects. He says the city doesn't have to pay to haul the wood chips and tree pieces away or buy fresh mulch when they need it for landscaping.The wood chips are used to help with weed control and ground cover across Scripps Ranch."It's natural here, it's generated here, it stays here," says Ilko, adding that there's also an environmental benefit since it keeps all the wood chips out of city landfills.Ilko says the pile is larger than usual right now, but that's because crews have been hard at work clearing away dead and dying trees from the area.And while the wood chips are on city-owned land, that does not mean they're available to the general public."It's city property," says Ilko. "If people take them, it defeats the purpose of keeping the wood chips here to save money."He also says contractors are not allowed to use the area to dump their wood chips.When asked if the pile presents a fire hazard, Ilko told 10News the Fire Department has been out to inspect the area, and they say there is no danger of any spontaneous combustion."It's not mulch, it doesn't heat up and break down like manure or mulch," says Ilko. 1889

(KGTV) — An immersive, pop-up museum dedicated to avocados will open in North San Diego County this summer."The Cado" pop-up museum will open in San Marcos' North City development, near Cal State San Marcos, this summer. The unique museum features six rooms of interactive art installations that allows fans to dig deeper into the fruit.Visitors can experience things like the Ripe Room, a room clad in avocado-skinned walls, or learn all about the growing process with Jason Mraz (a farmer in addition to his music success). California is responsible for about 90% of the U.S. avocado crop. SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Protesters dressed in salon gear took to the street outside House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s San Francisco home Thursday.In video of the protest, some demonstrators are seen with curlers in their hair, plastic is draped over them and hair dryers hang from trees.The rally came two days after video of Pelosi getting her hair cut inside a California salon surfaced.California Governor Gavin Newsom lifted restrictions on hair salons serving customers indoors at the end of last month. However, the city of San Francisco still requires such services to only be provided outside.Pelosi says the salon told her it would be OK to come inside, because they are only accommodating one person at a time.She also claims the whole thing was a set-up, since the video was released to the media by the salon's owner, KGO reports. A photo of Pelosi on the same visit shows her wearing a mask around her neck instead of on her face. She says that's because she had just had her hair washed. 1004

San Francisco may be the next U.S. city to allow 16- and 17-year-olds to vote. Residents will vote on the matter this November.If the measure is passed, the young people would be able to participate in local elections, which usually don't have high turnout.“They've seen that by extending voting rights to people of that age, they've actually increased the level of interest and attention in local politics, not only in those who are newly able to vote, but among their parents and their communities as well,” said Brandon Klugman, Vote 16 Campaign Manager at Generation Citizen.Critics question if teens are mature enough and educated enough to vote.Researchers in Austria, where the national voting age starts at 16, found teens are not likely to be less educated or less motivated to participate in voting.The campaign Vote 16 USA says teens are not likely to make rushed or stressed decisions when it comes to voting.They say teens are more likely to be in a stable environment, where they're surrounded by family, peers, and educators.“In a stable environment, it's great to establish the habit of voting, whereas at 18 on the other hand, most folks are in some sort of intense transition, whether that's joining the workforce, starting college, moving away from home, or going after some sort of transition,” said Klugman.Advocates say this will help in creating a life-long habit of voting.Oakland, California, is considering a similar measure, but it would only allow young voters to participate in school board elections.Several cities in Massachusetts and Maryland have passed similar measures. SEATTLE (AP) — Starbucks says it will offer delivery in most of the U.S. by early next year.The Seattle coffee company launched delivery last fall in Miami with its partner, Uber Eats. It has since expanded to 10 additional U.S. cities, including Los Angeles, Chicago and New York.Starbucks says Uber Eats will remain its preferred provider as it rolls out delivery more widely.Customers in most areas where Starbucks and Uber Eats operate will be able to order drinks and other menu items. Uber Eats says it currently covers more than 70% of the U.S. population.Starbucks and Uber Eats will also work together to improve delivery packaging, in-store operations and delivery speed. 689
