CHANGSHA, May 13 (Xinhua) -- The body of an elderly man has been recovered from the debris of a landslide, bringing the death toll from rainstorms in central China's Hunan Province to 12, the Hunan flood-control and drought relief headquarters said Thursday.About 42,000 people were relocated to safe areas over the past day as the rainstorms lashed more than 280 townships in Hunan from 2 p.m. Wednesday, said a statement from the headquarters.The latest victim was a 72-year-old man who died in a rain-triggered landslide in Xupu County of Huaihua City, where four bridges collapsed and 68 roads were cut by flooding, said Zhou Shengqi, publicity officer of Xupu.  A strawberry field in Loudi, Central China's Hunan province is flooded on May 13, 2010. The rainstorms damaged 10,200 hectares of crops and destroyed 480 residential buildings in the county, Zhou said.The violent weather occurred five days after storms that killed 11 people and left two others missing in Hunan.Heavy rains were forecast to continue to pound Hunan for the next five days and neighboring Guangdong Province for the next two days, provincial meteorological authorities said Thursday.

We already know that 60 percent of the world population live in cities, the figure rises almost all the time. Some projections say that in fifty years there will be 80 percent of the world population live in cities," she indicated.According to the director general, the UNESCO is seeking answers through its experiences to some difficult issues that are associated with globalization and interconnectability of the world in the fields of culture, science and especially the education.She underlined that education and personnel training was the key factor to make a nation "competitive" and have "sustainable development."At last, the UNESCO chief issued a friendly message to China and Chinese people, saying China is a very old nation "with ancient roots very deep into all the culture of humans" and it meanwhile "shows the dynamism and creativity, which are examples for all the world.""I think China has proved that there are no limits, there is no problem that can not be overcome," she concluded.

YUSHU, Qinghai, June 1 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping on Tuesday called on members of the Communist Party of China (CPC) to play a leading role in reconstruction work in the quake-hit Yushu prefecture of northwestern Qinghai Province.Relevant authorities should place safeguarding and improving people's livelihood in the quake zone on top of their agenda, and should focus on ensuring normal lives and work for the people before reconstruction was completed, Xi said during an inspection in Yushu Tuesday.The vice president began his inspection in the quake zone by visiting Yushu's Hongqi Elementary School, where he encouraged the students to study hard to become "future talents for the development of the country, of Qinghai, and of the new Yushu prefecture."Xi also visited a field hospital and a reconstruction site.Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping(R front) shakes hands with a construction worker in quake-hit Yushu County, northwest China's Qinghai Province, June 1, 2010.Reconstruction of housing should be given top priority, Xi said, adding that authorities should also provide local people with better public service, balanced industrial structure, improved infrastructure and social order, more prosperous ethnic culture development as well as enhanced environmental protection.He also paid regards to members of the People's Liberation Army and the armed police who were currently engaged in quake relief in Yushu.
