San Diego (KGTV)- CSU San Marcos is hoping to help low-income students enrolled in the chemistry and biochemistry department. The department received a nearly million grant. A new program is expected to lead to a higher graduation rate.“Students from our department, they get placed in graduate programs across the nation,” says Professor Robert Iafe. “A large percentage actually joins the workforce.”Iafe says it’s their goal to continue students down this path.The National Science Foundation awarded the department nearly million for scholarships for low-income students.“Training somebody from the community to go out into the community only makes it stronger.”Incoming freshmen will participate in the department’s new program, referred to as the Targeted Learning Community.“We’re going to have a community made up of about 30 students that start freshman year in the same classes and progress all throughout as a cohort, through their entire career as a student,” says Iafe.The money will help the students pay for tuition, books, and more.“They often have to find full-time jobs to support themselves,” says Iafe. “They often have to do other things to be equal to, and on top of, the other students that don’t have this financial burden.”The Targeted Learning Community is only for the fall’s incoming freshman, but the staff is hopeful it will become permanent. The department tried the program back in 2013, and students had a much higher percentage of graduating in four years.The Chemistry and Bio-Chemistry Department will be hosting live Zoom sessions for parents and high school seniors interested in the scholarship and Target Learning Community. SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - As deaths in the US from suicide and opioid overdose skyrocket, San Diego health leaders have plans already in action to fight the rising trend."People are living in a lot of pain," says Dana Richardson, who oversees the Community Health and Engagement department at the Community Health Improvement Partners (CHIP)."We're talking about promoting resilience, problem-solving skills and reducing isolation."In San Diego in 2017, 458 people committed suicide, and 1,266 people died from an overdose. Richardson says the link between the two can't be ignored.The Centers for Disease Control says those two factors are the reason that life expectancy dropped in the US for the first time in years. According to a CDC report, someone born in 2018 can expect to live to be 78.6 years old, down from 78.7 in 2017.While the drop is slight, the factors causing it are significant."This is a large epidemic across the country," says Dr. Sayone Thihalolipavan, a Deputy Public Health Officer for the County Department of Health and Human Services.Thihalolipavan says the county has already put out health alerts warning people about Fentanyl, a highly potent opioid that can cause a fatal overdose from just a few microscopic particles. They have also received several state and federal grants to buy thousands of doses of Naloxone, a drug used to fight the effects of an opioid overdose.Across the nation, Fentanyl was responsible for 28,466 of the 70,237 overdose-related deaths in 2017.Other grants have paid for the training of medical professionals in the East County, where overdose numbers are higher. They're teaching doctors, nurses and pharmacists about which opioids are safer to prescribe, and in what amount. The hope is the training will help people avoid addiction and dependency, which can lead to abuse.Other health officials are looking at the link between alcohol abuse and suicides.A recent county study showed that the top three areas in San Diego for suicide rates all rank in the top five for the prevalence of alcohol licenses and sales. Richardson believes that shows alcohol's role in people choosing to take their own life."It's a mind-altering drug," he says.The county also has a website, Up2SD.org and a crisis hotline (888-724-7240) set up for anyone who needs help. 2321

San Diego (KGTV)- For many people who live on a fixed income buying groceries may be a challenge. But now, 95,000 San Diegans receiving Supplemental Security Income, or SSI, will be able to apply for the CalFresh program (food stamps). “Individuals receiving SSI receives no more than 0 a month,” says Amanda Schultz Brocheo, with the San Diego Hunger Coalition. “For the majority, of SSI recipients, this all the money they have.”In San Diego, 1 in 11 older adults don’t have enough food to eat. “In some cases, we’ve heard of SSI recipients that will pull out a calendar and circle the days they are going to choose not to eat.”The San Diego Hunger Coalition says they are happy about the expansion but say the amount per day the is less than a day. “We determined that here in San Diego County the average CalFresh allotment is .07 a day.” This week also marks CalFresh Challenge Week. The organization encourages San Diegans to try living off a day for food. It’s meant to bring awareness to the food insecurities around the county. “We know that the CalFresh program is our strongest tool to for fighting hunger and also recognize that the current allotment is fairly small,” says Brocheo. “It makes it fairly difficult for people to live on that amount. SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) -- The family of Crystal Odom filled a San Diego courtroom Monday morning to hear a judge sentence the man convicted of killing Odom in a drive-by shooting in 1995. The judge sentenced Aswad Walker to 15 years to life for Odom's murder, plus three years for gang ties. He was convicted of second-degree murder back in February for Odom's death. Two previous trials had ended in hung juries. Odom's parents spoke before the sentencing. Her mother called Walker a coward and told him he would get what he deserved in prison. When Odom's father, James Odom, spoke, the family became very emotional, tears and sobs could be heard throughout the courtroom. Odom said a burden was lifted off his shoulders and that the sentencing marked an end to a long ordeal. At the time of the shooting, Crystal was with her then boyfriend and her 10-month-old daughter. Her daughter and boyfriend were unhurt. 959

SAN DIEGO, CA (KGTV) The two-year-old twin girls who were in a truck that sped off of Sunset Cliffs Saturday are recovering.That’s according to a family friend who started a GoFundMe campaign to help the twins’ mother with any expenses related to the crash.“She’s a great mother, she’s sticking strong through all of this, the girls are doing good,” said family friend Adrianna Lopez. “Money should be the last thing she needs to worry about, it’s just about keeping herself sane through all of this, her kids their health, mental, physical, everything.”Lopez and a family member tell 10News the girls are now stable. She said the twins just turned two years old in May.On Saturday, the toddlers were riding in a truck that San Diego Police say was driven by their father.Officers were warned to be on the lookout for a suicidal man threatening to drive off of the Coronado Bridge.Cellphone GPS data located the father, now identified as 47-year-old Robert Brians, at Sunset Cliffs.SDPD K9 Officer Jonathan Wiese was close by and jumped into action after the truck went over the cliffside.He and other first responders were able to save the twins and Brians.“The action that the first responders did, we’re just forever grateful, forever grateful,” said Lopez.Brians was arrested for two counts of attempted murder, two counts of kidnapping, one count of burglary, and two counts of child cruelty.The San Diego District Attorney’s office said is has until Wednesday to make a filing decision.
