BEIJING, Dec. 26 (Xinhua) -- With a series of measures being adopted to curb price spikes, the Chinese government is confident of keeping prices at a reasonable level, Premier Wen Jiabao said Sunday morning."Inflation expectations are more dire than inflation itself," Wen said, urging people to remain confident and government agencies to act to stabilize prices.The premier made the remarks while answering a listener's question during a radio broadcast by China National Radio.The consumer price index (CPI), a main gauge of inflation, rose to a 28-month high of 5.1 percent year on year in November, according to government statistics.Food price rises contributed to 74 percent of the CPI growth for the month.Wen said the country had a good agricultural supply base which gave the government confidence that it could stabilize prices.In a bid to control inflation, the government has also increased the bank reserve requirement ratio six times and lifted interest rates twice this year, he added.Further, authorities have introduced a package of measures including cutting fees for transportation of agriculture products and intensifying the crackdown on food price speculation.The overall price level, especially of major consumer goods, has now begun to drop, Wen said.

BRUSSELS, Jan. 11 (Xinhua) -- Chinese and EU leaders on Tuesday signed a first joint declaration on strengthening dialogue and cooperation on youth issues as the 2011 EU-China Year of Youth kicked off here.Androulla Vassiliou, EU Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth, said at the opening ceremony that the year would open up new horizons for young people from Europe and China by enabling them to share experiences and learn from each other."I hope that such exchanges will inspire concrete ideas for cooperation and establish long-lasting partnerships," Vassiliou said.The opening ceremony was the first of a series of exchange activities to be held throughout the year in Europe and China. China is now the world's largest goods exporter and the UK's largest goods export market outside the U.S. and EU. MOSCOW, Dec. 28 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese Assistant Foreign Minister Cheng Guoping held talks with Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexei Borodavkin here on Tuesday, exchanging views with the Russian side on the current situation of the Korean Peninsula.The two sides reached consensus on the issue, saying both China and Russia urged the Republic of Korea (ROK) and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) to jointly mitigate tensions on the peninsula and to resume direct dialogue at an early date.Escalating tensions on the peninsula may even trigger a war, which is absolute not in line with the interests of the relevant sides including Russia, the United States and Japan, the two diplomats said in a joint statement.The ROK and the DPRK are the most susceptible if the war broke out, the statement added.China and Russia will never allow any war on the peninsula, or the lingering tensions between the two countries. Thus, China and Russia will continue to further cooperation and coordination on the issue and to push forward the direct dialogue between the ROK and the DPRK, the diplomats said.They said China and Russia are calling for joint efforts from relevant sides to stabilize the situation on the peninsula and not to impair peace, safety or stability.The two sides also reiterated that the six-party talks were proved to be the most realistic and most effective solution to solving the problem.Currently, emergency consultations among the heads of delegations to the six-party talks are in urgent need, they added.Launched in 2003 and stalled since the end of 2008, the six- party talks on the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue involve China, the United States, the DPRK, the ROK, Russia and Japan.The two sides also exchanged views on bilateral ties, including high-level exchanges, the overall promotion of China-Russia strategic partnership of coordination, and several other issues.
