LA JOLLA, Calif. (KGTV) — Imagine swimming when suddenly hundreds of fins start gliding through the water around you.Local beachgoers may be familiar with the sight, as shown in recently captured drone video in La Jolla. The video shows a mesmerizing view of the massive grouping of leopard sharks, about 4- to 5-foot long, swimming off the coast.Andrew Nosal, a professor and marine biologist at University of San Diego, recorded the video Monday — he also studied the sharks extensively for his dissertation at Scripps Institution of Oceanography.According to Nosal, the gathering, while perhaps intimidating to some, isn't all that rare.RELATED: Killer whale pod preys on dolphins off Southern California coast"Group formation ... is a common behavior for leopard sharks. In La Jolla, these leopard sharks are mostly (over 95%) mature pregnant females," Nosal said. "They appear to be attracted to this site because of its calm, warm water, which we hypothesize speeds up the rate of embryonic development."Leopard sharks give birth every spring after a 10- to 11-month gestation period.The sharks may also be attracted to food in the area, Nosal added, as they feed on squid, octopus, crabs, and small fish in nearby submarine canyons at night.RELATED: Dad captures son wakeboarding with dolphins off San Diego coastAnd while from above the sight of hundreds of sharks may alarm some, leopard sharks aren't considered threatening to humans as long as their space is respected."If a human grabs their tails, for example, the sharks may defend themselves by swinging around and biting the offender," Nosal said. "So, beachgoers should resist the temptation to touch or harass the sharks, which is a bad idea anyway, but also illegal because these sharks are inside a marine protected area."And if one is caught up in the swimming frenzy, there's no need to panic."...Enjoy the experience," Nosal said. LA JOLLA, Calif. (KGTV) - One of the most elite schools in San Diego has finished investigating accusations of decades of sexual abuse. Investigative reporter Jennifer Kastner broke the story last July when several former students at The Bishop's School came forward about former school employees. The numbers have since doubled. The current tuition at the prestigious private high school is more than ,000 per year. It's been ten months since we reported on how the school was dealing with claims of abuse that spanned three decades. In a transparent move last year, the The Bishop’s School revealed that seven members of its alumni had come forward and described fifteen separate instances of misconduct. Five of those were first-hand accounts of sexual misconduct or boundary violations committed by a school employee.READ: The Bishop's School dealing with multiple claims of sexual misconduct spanning several decadesSince then, The Bishop’s School has been working to complete its investigation. It is now over and the numbers are up. The school report’s, “To date, 14 alumni have come forward to report incidents of sexual misconduct.” The school also reports, "Ten different perpetrators were identified as having engaged in sexual misconduct that would potentially constitute a crime at the time of occurrence." None of the accused are apparently still with the school and at least two are reportedly dead. The school reports that most of the cases were from the 1970s and 1980s. There were no reported cases within the last 20 years.The school declined an interview with 10News, but in a new letter to alumni, it reaffirms its commitment to student safety and apologies to everyone who was affected.The school has turned over ten cases to the San Diego Police Department and says it will notify the community if charges are filed against any of its former school employees. 1894

Legislation requiring shoppers to wear masks in New Jersey stores is one step closer to becoming law.A bill proposed by state Democratic lawmakers got the stamp of approval from a New Jersey Assembly committee Thursday.If passed, customers could be fined between and 0 for being in a business without a mask that covers the nose and mouth. The bill would apply to any store that has posted signage saying masks are required.Assembly Democrats who backed the bill called the legislation "a matter of life and death" and said there needs to be a penalty for those who don't do their part to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.Republican lawmakers called the bill ludicrous and an attack on residents' civil liberties.Some suggested a better policy would be for businesses to refuse to serve customers who choose not to wear masks.Hoboken, New Jersey tried to pass a similar mask ordinance in August, attempting to fine people 0 for not wearing a mask in any place where social distancing was not possible. It ultimately did not pass.In New York City, MTA riders can now be fined for refusing to wear a mask on buses, subways and trains.As of midnight in Connecticut, anyone can now be fined 0 for violating mask and social distancing orders.
