His family evacuated ahead of the storm, but he stayed behind to care for his patients. Now, he's raising thousands of dollars for frontline medical workers who lost everything in the storms.Other businesses, who were already struggling through the pandemic, are trying to stay afloat.As a man with a guitar plays upbeat music outside Jason Machulski's downtown Lake Charles market, business is giving him a positive outlook.Like many business owners this year, the pandemic has been a fight.“We provided toilet paper, essentials, meat, bread, cleaning supplies, but it hit us financially pretty bad," Machulski recalled.Hurricane Laura knocked his power out for a month. His lights are now back on, but for many others, they’ll stay dark.“A lot of businesses that are local staples are just gone," he said.The people of Lake Charles may wonder why Mother Nature chose them.“You just trust in God that he’s going to take care of things," said Abshire.For those still sifting through the rubble, rebuilding is less about why and more about what you can learn on the journey to recovery.“Picking up the pieces and going forward, and that’s what we’re going to do," Abshire said. 2124

Clinging to notions of widespread vote rigging that his own attorney general has disputed, President Donald Trump repeated a litany of baseless assertions Wednesday of political corruption, machine tampering and mysterious votes appearing out of nowhere that allowed Joe Biden to steal the election.“This election is about great voter fraud, fraud that has never been seen like this before,” Trump said in a 46-minute address posted on social media.“It’s about poll watchers who were not allowed to watch. So illegal. It’s about ballots that poured in and nobody but a few knew where they came from. ... It’s about machinery that was defective, machinery that was stopped.”None of those assertions are true.A look at the claims and reality:VOTER FRAUDTRUMP: “You can’t let another person steal that election from you.”THE FACTS: To be clear, no election was stolen from Trump.One month after the Nov. 3 election and as states begin certifying their votes, Trump is clinging to false notions of voter fraud. But others in his administration have already said the election was secure. Attorney General William Barr said the Justice Department had seen no evidence of widespread fraud to overturn Biden’s margin of victory.Biden earned 306 electoral votes to Trump’s 232, the same margin that Trump had when he beat Hillary Clinton in 2016, which he repeatedly described as a “landslide.” (Trump ended up with 304 electoral votes because two electors defected.) Biden achieved victory by prevailing in key states such as Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Arizona and Georgia.Trump’s allegations of massive voting fraud have been refuted by a variety of judges, state election officials and an arm of his own administration’s Homeland Security Department. Many of his campaign’s lawsuits across the country have been thrown out of court. Trump is actually describing a legitimate vote counting process, not a sudden surge of malfeasance that no one has seen before.Indeed, news organizations and officials had warned in the days and weeks leading up to the election that the results would likely come in just as they did: In-person votes, which tend to be counted more quickly, would likely favor the president, who had spent months warning his supporters to avoid mail-in voting and to vote in person either early or on Election Day.And mail-in ballots, which take longer to count since they must be removed from envelopes and verified before they are counted, would favor Biden. That pattern was exacerbated by the fact that many states prohibited early counting of mail-in votes that arrived before Election Day.In addition, big cities are often slower to report their numbers, and those votes tend to skew Democratic. When it was finished, Milwaukee police escorted the city’s elections director from a central counting location to the county courthouse to deliver thumb drives with the ballot data.___DOMINIONTRUMP, on Dominion Voting Systems electoral software used in many states: “When you look at who’s running the company, who’s in charge, who owns it — which we don’t know — where are the votes counted — which we think are counted in foreign countries, not in the United States — Dominion is a disaster.”THE FACTS: Servers that run Dominion software are in local election offices, not in foreign countries. Claims that the company has foreign servers or ties to Germany or Venezuela are false.It’s true that the company is privately held and does not disclose its financials, but the New York-based private equity firm Staple Street Capital has owned a majority stake in Dominion since 2018. Fictional claims that Dianne Feinstein, the Clinton family, Nancy Pelosi and Hugo Chavez are owners of Dominion have been debunked.“There is no evidence that any voting system deleted or lost votes, changed votes, or was in any way compromised” in the 2020 election, according to a joint statement released by the federal Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency.___TRUMP: “In one Michigan county, as an example, that used Dominion systems, they found that nearly 6,000 votes had been wrongly switched from Trump to Biden. And this is just the tip of the iceberg. This is what we caught. How many didn’t we catch?”THE FACTS: That’s a misrepresentation.It’s true that a tabulation problem in the 2020 election involved a few thousand votes in Antrim County, Michigan. But that was the result of human error.When the Republican-leaning county initially reported a landslide win for Biden, social media users grew suspicious about the Dominion election management system used to tabulate the data.It turned out Dominion was not to blame, according to the Michigan Department of State. “There was no malice, no fraud here, just human error,” County Clerk Sheryl Guy told the AP. The tabulation error was corrected.Eddie Perez, a voting technology expert at the OSET Institute, a nonpartisan election technology research and development nonprofit, agreed that the Michigan case was the result of human error involving voting technology, not the software itself.___‘DEAD’ VOTERSTRUMP: “Dead people — and we have many examples — filled out ballots, made applications and then voted.”THE FACTS: He’s repeating a false claim of dead people voting, particularly in Pennsylvania and Michigan. But there’s no evidence that this occurred, and officials in both states say the claims are unfounded.The false claim that deceased voters cast ballots “comes up every election,” said Jason Roberts, a professor of political science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.Experts told the AP that it is common for state voter rolls to include voters with birthdates that make them appear impossibly old, but these are usually explained by human error, software quirks or voter confidentiality issues.“A similar complaint was brought before a PA court — and soundly rejected,” the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General said in a statement. “The court found no deficiency in how PA maintains its voter rolls, and there is currently no proof provided that any deceased person has voted in the 2020 election.”Tracy Wimmer, a spokesperson for Michigan’s secretary of state’s office, told the AP that on rare occasions a ballot received from a voter may be recorded as though that person is too old to be alive. Trump’s representatives sued to allow the observers to get closer than the guidelines had allowed. A court ruled in favor of that request.The counting in Philadelphia was being livestreamed, and Trump’s lawyers admitted in court that their campaign had observers in the room — “a nonzero” number of them, as they put it. CORONADO, Calif. (KGTV) -- Two Good Samaritans say they saved a man off the ledge of the Coronado Bridge late Monday night. They said they spotted him while driving home from San Diego, and couldn't help but turn around to get him. 10News Photojournalist Zach Wonderlie talked to them about the life-saving rescue"We were driving from the San Diego area to Coronado and I noticed a kid sitting on the ledge," said Aiden Leavitt. The driver of the car, Charles Crehore, instantly sprung into action - deciding to back up on the empty bridge and help save the man's life. "I'd actually thought about this. I'd thought, 'If if I ever get in that situation, what am I gonna do?" Crehore said. "And I decided if it comes to me and I'm there...I'm stopping my car, I'm gonna get out and I'm gonna stop them."As he backed up to where the man stood on the bridge, Leavitt jumped out of the passenger side and bear-hugged the man on the bridge. "I just didn't hesitate. I just jumped out of the car and I grabbed him," Leavitt said. The man didn't fight back as Leavitt pulled him into the car, and allowed the friends to drive him to Sharp Coronado Hospital. It wasn't long before his family and police showed up to help.The men say they're grateful that they were in the right place at the right time. "I just hope that he works his way through whatever it is that he's having trouble with," Crehore said.If you or a loved one is experiencing symptoms of depression, the number to the San Diego Crisis Hotline is 888 - 724 - 7240. 1626

CLEVELAND — The morning of Nov. 23 started out like any other for Amanda Zupancic. She’s a special education teacher in Cleveland. Around 11 a.m. that morning, in what would be her 3rd period class, she was in session with a middle school student and his mom on Zoom in the upstairs office of her west Cleveland home.She was suddenly interrupted with a loud noise.“I heard a glass-shattering crash downstairs,” she said. “I was like, 'hold on, I think someone is breaking into my house, just joking.' I didn’t think anyone would be breaking into my house in the middle of the day,” she said.But that is exactly what was happening.“There was a man walking though my baby gate with a knife in his hand walking upstairs,” said Zupancic. “He started threatening me, yelling at me, calling me names. He grabbed me upstairs into my bedroom.”The man began rummaging through her things, all the while Zupancic’s student and his family were still on that Zoom call listening from Lake County.In the 911 call, the student’s dad tried to explain the situation. “The teacher that teaches my son, somebody broke into her house we saw it on the Zoom,” said the student’s dad to a Lake County dispatcher.As the robber frantically searched for valuables, the dad gave as much detail to the dispatcher as he could.“I guess she heard the man say, ‘Get on the floor. I’m going to cut your f-ing throat,’” he told the dispatcher.Zupancic told the man he could have her car keys but they were downstairs. He agreed she could go and get them. She said, instead of getting the keys, she let her two dogs out.“When I reached for my keys, instead I opened the gate and I have a German shepherd and a Great Dane-boxer mix. So the German Shepherd stood between myself and this guy, and the Great Dane Boxer mix went at him,” she said.It gave her enough time to think.“I just grabbed a pair of scissors and I chased him to the front door,” she said.She continued to chase him down her street.“I started chasing him with this pair of scissors, in my house shoes, down the street, yelling 'help me, help me, this guy robbed me,'” she said.Zupancic said a local contractor working on a house in her neighborhood saw the encounter and tackled the man to the ground and detained him until Cleveland police arrived.When they got there, they arrested Charles Derosett.Derosett is charged with aggravated robbery and felonious assault as well as other charges. He is a convicted felon, previously serving time behind bars for aggravated robbery.Zupancic is still shaken up. CINCINNATI (WCPO) -- Police officers who investigated an apartment building in Cincinnati, Ohio Sunday left "deeply disturbed" by what they saw there: Duct tape, shoelaces and socks that had been used to bind and gag a pair of 4-year-old twin boys in an abusive form of discipline, according to Det. Janette Vaughn."(The officers) just felt so emotionally disturbed by what they saw," Fraternal Order of Police president Sgt. Dan Hils said Monday. "It's so unique and remarkable that it took very veteran, very seasoned, inner-city police officers to say, 'Wow, this is unbelievable.'"The boys' father, 26-year-old James Howell and his 30-year-old girlfriend, Jamie Carver, both stand charged with multiple counts of child endangering and kidnapping. A third adult, 30-year-old Rowdy Warren, was charged with obstructing official business after police discovered he had also been present in the apartment where the abuse took place.The boys were moved to a foster family while their guardians stand trial, Vaughn said."It just makes you wonder what frame of mind they were in," Phil Harris, who works near the scene, said. "Are they on drugs? I just don't understand people that could harm children."According to Hils, officers began collecting donations within the department for the boys.Kidnapping and child endangering are both felony offenses.
