OTAY MESA, Calif. (KGTV) - Eight border wall prototypes erected along the U.S.-Mexico border crossing in South San Diego County will soon be dismantled, a Border Patrol source confirmed to 10News Friday. The area is being cleared to make way for the secondary border fence, the official said. The Department of Homeland Security hired companies to build the prototypes, which were finished in October 2017. The designs were constructed to the Border Patrol’s requirements and stood 30 feet high, most made of thick concrete. “We’ll look at things like aesthetics, how penetrable they area, how resistant they are to tampering, and then scaling or anti-climb features,” CBP Deputy Commissioner Ronald Vitiello said in 2017. RELATED: EXCLUSIVE: Candidate describes border wall prototypeOver two months, Customs and Border Protection officials tested the walls using power tools, hand tools, and other methods. The CBP evaluated the prototypes to determine if anyone could get through by climbing or digging. The vendors hired to complete the work included Caddell Construction of Alabama, KWR Construction of Arizona, ELTA North America Inc. of Maryland, W.G. Yates & Sons Construction Company of Mississippi, Fisher Sand & Gravel Co. of Arizona, and Texas Sterling Construction Co. of Texas. Much of the input for the designs came from Border Patrol agents. RELATED: Photos: A look at the border wall prototypes"There was never an intent to pick one and copy that along the entire U.S. border. The entire concept literally was how can we do this better," San Diego Sector Border Patrol Chief Rodney Scott told 10News in 2018. "But we're not picking one of these walls over the other walls, and we never planned on doing that. So, depending on the terrain or the environment, it could be any one of these? Correct." President Trump toured the site in March 2018, alongside Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen. “It will save thousands and thousands of lives, save taxpayers hundreds of billions of dollars by reducing crime, drug flow, welfare fraud, and burdens on schools and hospitals. The wall will save hundreds of billions of dollars — many, many times what it’s going to cost,” said Trump after his review of the prototypes. 2252

Police are investigating the fatal shooting of a 2-year-old girl at a hotel in Wickliffe, Ohio on Friday night. The shooting happened around 11 p.m. at the Econo Lodge Wickliffe-Cleveland East, 28611 Euclid Ave. Police said it appears the child's mother was handling a gun when it went off and the 2-year-old girl was shot in the chest. The mother initially told the 911 operator the gun's safety was off, but a few seconds later said the safety was on when she dropped the weapon."The safety was on when I dropped the gun and the bullet shot her. The gun dropped, I dropped my gun," the mother told the 911 operator. "She's gone. My baby's gone. She's not breathing at all. She's gone."The child was taken to a nearby hospital but later died from the injury, according to authorities.Police said the shooting appears to be accidental. The mother had the weapon legally and had a concealed carry permit. It will be left up to the Lake County Crime Lab and the prosecutor's office to determine if any charges are filed, police said. 1062

Police in Wisconsin have confirmed two cases of tampered Halloween candy throughout the state. In Arcadia, Wisconsin — a town located near the Wisconsin/Minnesota border — police confirmed that at least one child found needles in multiple pieces of Halloween candy. The needles were not visible until the candy was opened and broken in half. In both instances, the needles appeared to be sewing needles.Police say the incident happened sometime during trick-or-treat hours, between 3:00 and 7:00 p.m. They've warned parents in the community to check their children's candy.A few hundred miles away in Neenah, Wisconsin, police reported that nails were found in three pieces of Halloween candy.A spokesman for the Neenah Police Department said that a mother found three Kit Kat candy bars with nails protruding from them in her son's candy stash.Police suspect they can narrow down the house where the boy was given the candy, but did not say they were investigating any suspects. It's the second straight year in which a nail was found in a Neenah trick-or-treater's candy. A child found a nail hidden in a Tootsie Roll in 2016. No arrest was made in that case.Police are encouraging Neenah parents to inspect their children's candy for anything suspcious. Those reports comes just days after police in Randolph, Wisconsin — located about three hours east of Arcadia — say that a child in town received a piece of tampered candy while trick or treating on Saturday.According to police, the child received a Now and Later that appeared to have been soaked in motor oil or some other foreign substance. Police aren't sure where the child received the candy and are asking community members for tips. 1736

PARSIPPANY, N.J. — The loss of Hannah Ernst’s grandfather, Cal Schoenfeld, is still very fresh in her mind."He was one in a million," she said when describing him. "He had a heart of gold and his smile was beyond anything."It was on May 8 when the family’s patriarch lost a month-long battle with COVID-19.The loss was devastating to the Parsippany family, all happening at the height of the COVID-19 crisis in New Jersey."There was a lot of panic, a lot of pandemonium," she said.A time of mourning soon turned into a moment of inspiration for the 15-year-old, who created a digital portrait to honor her grandfather."I was just really messing on my iPad," Ernst explained. "I’ve seen something similar where you make silhouettes of people but I thought how cool would it be if someone put the yellow heart, which is the symbol of COVID, in the back of them."The creative and powerful tribute was later posted by the teen’s mom in a COVID-19 support group on Facebook which then led to others inquiring about getting their loved ones memorialized. Her “Faces of Covid” project then materialized and 325 portraits later, Ernst says she’s just getting started."I think they felt a part of something," she said, referring to what her portraits brought to families. "I think that this virus has unfortunately put together a group of people that share the common thread of losing somebody."Ernst says her project will be an ongoing one, in an effort to highlight those lost while educating those unfazed by the death toll, now nearing 200,000 in the U.S."I’m trying to help the people who don’t necessarily see this virus as the threat, to really visualize the impact it’s had on this time."Learn more about the "Faces of Covid" project on Facebook. This story originally reported by Andrew Ramos on PIX11.com. 1813
