American Airlines announced they will furlough or layoff about 19,000 employees in October, as they struggle with lower passenger rates during the coronavirus pandemic. Flight attendants will bear the heaviest cuts, with 8,100 losing their jobs.The airline originally warned that 25,000 flight attendants, pilots and frontline workers could be at risk of furloughs. Tuesday’s announcement comes after about 23,000 employees took early retirement or voluntary leave, according to the Dallas Morning News.The furloughs come a week after American announced they would be cutting service to 15 markets “as a result of low demand and the expiration of the air service requirements associated with the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act.”U.S. air travel has recovered slightly since April but remains down 70% from a year ago, and carriers say they need fewer workers.In March, passenger airlines got billion from the government to save jobs for six months, but that money and a ban on furloughs both expire Oct. 1. 1044

A man in Florida called police while Collier County Sheriff's deputies were chasing him Tuesday morning.The sheriff's office report said it all started because the suspect acted suspiciously. The sheriff's deputy went up to the car and smelled a smell similar to marijuana.The deputy spotted a baggie that contained a green leafy substance. The suspect then grabbed the bag, put it in his mouth, and sped away."I need help, please," said Aric Frydberg, the man who was arrested after the 7-mile pursuit on U.S. 41. "There's a police officer chasing me," he added.Fort Myers-based WFTX obtained the 911 call. The operator tried numerous times to get Frydberg to pull over.But during the phone call, Frydberg tried to get the operator to make some calls on his behalf. The first set of calls was to his parents."Call my mom, call my mom," said Frydberg. "Please call my mom," he added while on the phone.Then he took it a step further and wanted to speak to the president.  "Donald Trump is a close friend of mine," said Frydberg. "We made a deal," he added while he was trying to convince the operator.Frydberg then changed gears and tried a different strategy.  "My mom called me and said she was in a car accident in Homestead," he said. "My flesh and blood was in a car accident and I have to stop and help you," Frydberg added.Deputies eventually got him off the road and phone.The report goes on to say the deputies searched the car and found glass pipes with burnt leafy residue on them. A handful of airports across the country are now offering tests for passengers.It's no secret that the global pandemic has turned the travel and airline industry upside down. The Airport Council International North America is known as the "voice of airports."“I look at airports, at cities within cities and anything that would affect the city would affect the airport and that’s what we do,” says CEO Kevin Burke.“Testing is that key that unlocks travel,” he added.Tampa International Airport was the first to jump on board with a program that was the first-of-its-kind in the nation. They offer both the PCR and rapid tests to anyone with proof of travel.“We’ve tested more than 4,100 passengers. It's gained in popularity. Passengers know we’re providing the testing at the airport and I will tell you before they open at 7:30 every morning, there’s 20 plus passengers waiting in line," says John Tiliacos, executive VP of airport operations.He said they launched the program in early October in hopes of instilling confidence and encouraging travel."Given the environment we’re in with this pandemic, we’ve got to do everything we can as an industry both airline or airport industry. We’ve got to do everything we can to breathe life back into this industry and get it back up on its feet and running again,” Tiliacos said.Since then, they've fielded calls from other airports inquiring about the program. If a passenger gets a negative test, they go on about their day. But, if it's positive, ACI-NA says, it's not the airports' responsibility to escort the passenger out.“They’ve gotten very few passengers that have tested positive but they’ve had a couple and they can’t proceed past that because TSA is not going to let them through a checkpoint with a positive read," said Burke.While an increase in testing is a good thing, doctors advise that it's not a guarantee by any means.“This test isn’t an insurance policy for the rest of the week, the rest of the month or the rest of your life, it tells you what your status is right now,” says Dr. Beth Thielen, an infectious disease physician and assistant professor of pediatrics at the University of Minnesota Medical School.“For example, if you went to a bar the night before you flew and you were around 100 people without masks, you potentially could be infected, but if you take a test at the airport the next day, you may very well test negative and a week down the road, you may develop symptoms and be capable of spreading COVID,” says Dr. Thielen.But she also says this program is a start, and it helps people make better decisions about what they're doing and where they're going. After weeks of wrangling, the MLB Players’ Association told MLB that players will be ready to report on July 1 for a second Spring Training.Teams will conduct a 60-game season in home ballparks, MLB said on Tuesday. Most teams will conduct their preseason training in their home cities instead of utilizing Spring Training facilities. The length of the season has been greatly reduced from 162 games after MLB suspended the season in March. The regular season is expected to begin on July 23 or 24. Teams will play the majority of their games versus in-division opponents, with the remaining games being played against interleague teams from the same geographic division. "Major League Baseball is thrilled to announce that the 2020 season is on the horizon," MLB commissioner Rob Manfred said.
