BEIJING, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) -- Chinese State Councilor Liu Yandong said on Thursday China would strive to set up a scientific and effective system for the protection of the country's intangible cultural heritage (ICH).Governments at all levels must take the initiative in safeguarding ICH and, incorporate it into the work agenda and assessment system of officials, said Liu at a ceremony awarding certifications for China's UNESCO ICHs in Beijing.She called for enacting related laws and regulations, as well as resolute measures to prevent the ravaging and destruction of ICHs by over-exploitation for economic purposes, such as tourism.She also called for more funding and international cooperation in safeguarding ICHs.China is a country with a rich cultural heritage. So far, a total of 29 cultural heritage categories have been included in the UNESCO ICH list.

TAIPEI, June 9 (Xinhua) -- Governor of east China's Zhejiang Province Lu Zushan started an eight-day visit to Taiwan Wednesday with the aim of deepening economic and cultural cooperation between the two regions.Under the theme "Visiting Friends, Conducting Exchanges and Cooperation," the delegation will launch cooperation programs with Taiwanese counterparts in finance, agriculture, tourism, culture and education.The delegation will learn about Taiwan's experience in environment protection, disaster response and relief, and public services at the grassroots level.The delegation will also visit residential communities, villages and enterprises to communicate with local residents.Apart from provincial government officials, the delegation also includes entrepreneurs. One of the entrepreneurs is Ma Yun, CEO of Zhejiang-based Alibaba Group, the parent of Alibaba.com, the global e-commerce site for small and medium businesses that connects buyers and sellers.During a meeting between Lu and the Taiwan-based Kuomintang's (KMT) honorary chairman, Wu Poh-hsiung, Wednesday, both sides expressed their hopes to increase the number of Zhejiang residents visiting the island this year.Nearly 130,000 Zhejiang residents visited Taiwan last year, accounting for about 20 percent of the Chinese mainland's total, according to Lu.Both Lu and Wu expected the number of Zhejiang visitors to exceed 180,000 this year.Zhejiang is where many Taiwan people come from."More than one million Taiwanese people are natives of Zhejiang," Lu said.The province is also a magnet for Taiwanese investment. XI'AN, July 20 (Xinhua) -- Floods and landslides triggered by torrential rains have left at least 15 people dead and 54 missing in northwest China's Shaanxi Province, flood control authorities said late Monday.The lives of more than 1.33 million people were disrupted by the heavy flooding in 23 counties and cities in the southern regions of the province, said officials in the provincial flood control headquarters.Torrential rains have cut off roads, flattened homes, destroyed power facilities and flooded farmland in the worst-hit Ankang City, causing economic losses estimated at 881 million yuan (129 million U.S. dollars), said officials.In the mountainous county of Langao in Ankang, three people were reported dead and 17 still missing after landslides and mud-rock flows struck several villages late Sunday.Continuous rainfall has battered many Chinese provinces and regions over the past week.In neighboring Sichuan Province, flash floods and landslides left at least 26 people dead and more than 30 missing.China is also preparing for the worst Yangtze flooding in more than a decade as water levels in the upper and middle sections of China' s longest waterway continue rising.
