Officials in North Carolina now say that seven people have been killed in flash floods prompted by Tropical Storm Eta.The Charlotte Observer reports that four people were killed in Alexander County, located about an hour north of Charlotte. There, at a local campground, three bodies were recovered and another 31 people were rescued. As of Thursday afternoon, an adult and a child were still missing from the campsite.Elsewhere in Alexander County, another person died when floodwaters caused a bridge to collapse. It was one of four bridges in the country that were swept away by floods, and one of the collapses was captured live by a local TV news channel. The Observer reports that two other deaths were recorded in Iredell County when floodwaters caused a pickup truck to hydroplane and collided with an oncoming car.The New York Times reports that the seventh fatality occurred in Wake County — near Raleigh — where witnesses say a child who had been playing near a creek drowned in a flash flood.According to The Weather Channel, the Charlotte area received seven inches of rain on Thursday, causing creeks and rivers to overflow quickly. Five counties in North Carolina declared states of emergency. The National Hurricane Center reports that Eta, now a post-tropical cyclone, is currently located just offshore of the Carolinas. The storm's outer bands are still bringing rain to coastal areas of the states. 1424

On Monday, McDonald's announced that they are developing a new plant-based burger, which they've coined the McPlant. They also are launching a new Crispy Chicken Sandwich in early 2021.In a blog post, the company said it would be testing a meat-free burger in several markets next year. They tried the plant-based burger in select restaurants in Canada last year."There are other plant-based burgers out there, but the McPlant delivers our iconic taste in a sink-your-teeth-in (and wipe-your-mouth) kind of sandwich," the fast-food chain said in the blog post. "It's made with a juicy, plant-based patty and served on a warm, sesame seed bun with all the classic toppings."The new sandwich announcements come as part of the company's current growth strategy called "Accelerating the Arches," which is an effort to boost sales. The plan includes new packaging, a loyalty program called "MyMcDonald's," and providing a fast, comfortable experience for our customers with a "powerful digital experience."Through "MyMcDonald's," customers will receive special offers. The new program will be launched in the coming weeks in the Phoenix area as a pilot program."In countries around the world, we have seen customer behaviors change at an unprecedented pace over the last several months. We believe this presents an opportunity to do something special as we write the next great chapter of McDonald's," said McDonald's President and Chief Executive Officer Chris Kempczinski in the news release. "By embracing a bigger, more holistic vision for the future, Accelerating the Arches defines how McDonald's will deliver value to all stakeholders by providing a clear roadmap of what we can do for the millions of customers, in the thousands of communities, we serve each and every day. With our new growth strategy, we will build on our inherent strengths by harnessing our competitive advantages and investing in innovations that enable us to continue to offer fast, easy moments for our customers."McDonald's says they plan to test new concepts such as automated order taking and an express drive-thru pickup lane for customers who placed a digital order. The company also plans to use new toasted buns and enhance the grilling approach to its hamburgers. 2253

ORLANDO, Fla. — As the coronavirus pandemic is expected to continue through the rest of the 2020 calendar year, and possibly beyond, Disney announced it is calling off some of its popular holiday traditions this winter.Disney said on its park blog that Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party and Candlelight Processional at EPCOT will both be called off amid coronavirus concerns. While Disney vows to keep its holiday spirits at the resort hotels with Christmas trees and other festive decorations, the gingerbread displays will not make a comeback this winter due to social distancing guidelines."We know these experiences are a cherished part of holiday traditions that will be missed by guests and cast members alike, but we’re glad to be able to bring holiday magic in other creative ways," Disney's communication team said in its park blog. However, the good news for families planning to celebrate the holidays at Disney is that Santa Claus, elves, reindeer and the gingerbread men will make their usual appearances at the theme parks this holiday season. You can click here for more information on how Disney plans to celebrate the holidays. This story was originally published by KJ Hiramoto at WFTS. 1210

OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) - Therapy dogs are tasked with healing patients who are up against diversity. But two who walk the halls of Tri-City Medical Center have their own stories of survival."I think every one of us, animal or human, has our own story. We all have our trials and tribulations. And so I think having animals that have been through some difficult times helps them relate with our patients in a much more profound way," said Aaron Byzak, Chief External Affairs Officer for Tri-City Medical Center. Two veterans of the Pet Therapy Program are Prince the poodle and Calamity Jane the golden retriever, one a cancer survivor and the other a trauma survivor. "She's a very strong, strong, little pup, she's got a mind of her own," said Shar Pauley, who rescued Calamity Jane. "And she tells me which rooms she'd like to visit. Sometimes she'll walk down that hallway and then she'll stop and say I think this person needs a visit." The program has been comforting patients for over 20 years now."He's had nine lives, and I think part of his motivation for giving back is he just loves to work, and he loves people," said Mary Gleisberg, Prince's owner. The dogs must go through a rigorous process to earn their badge and must receive a bath before walking their rounds in the hospital. 1304
