BEIJING, Dec. 20 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping on Saturday called on officials and party members to well study two new guidelines while learning and implementing the Scientific Outlook on Development. Xi told a video conference here that President Hu Jintao's speech at the event to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the 3rdplenary session of the 11th Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee on Thursday was an important guideline for Chinese people to bring the socialism with Chinese characteristics to a new stage. Through this speech, all CPC members will fully understand the achievements in the past three decades and the bright future of the country, he said. All the party members should realize their responsibility, fear no risk and remain resolved against any disturbance, he said. Xi urged officials and party members to fully understand and implement the guidelines set at the annual Central Economic Work Conference. In September, the CPC launched a one and a half year campaign to study and apply the Scientific Outlook on Development, which was adopted by the party at the 17th CPC National Congress in October 2007. Now the campaign has entered a stage that officials should find out major problems that holds back the Scientific Development, Xi said. Everyone should work hard to identify the exact problems and the cause of the problems in a bid to work out effective solutions, he said.
BEIJING, Jan. 4 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao on Sunday spoke over telephone with his U.S. counterpart George W. Bush about bilateral relations and major international issues of common concern. The two leaders exchanged congratulations on achievements that have been made in the development of bilateral relations since the forging of diplomatic ties between China and the U.S. 30 years ago. They expressed the hope that a series of events to mark the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations would be successful. President Hu agreed with Bush's positive remarks on China-U.S. relations and hailed his efforts to develop a constructive and cooperative Sino-U.S. relationship. In the new historical period of time, China and the United States, through their joint efforts, will surely be able to stay firm in the general direction of the China-U.S. constructive and cooperative relationship and promote sound, stable, all-round and in-depth development of bilateral ties, Hu noted. Bush, for his part, said China and the United States have engaged in good cooperation over the past 30 years which deserves congratulation. The U.S. president said he was pleased that he has conducted satisfactory cooperation with President Hu during his presidency. On the Middle East situation, Hu said China is seriously concerned about escalation of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and worsening of the volatile situation in the Middle East and is deeply worried about the humanitarian crisis taking place in the Gaza Strip. China calls on all the parties concerned to stop military operation and armed conflicts, promote the relaxation of tension in the region and create conditions for a solution to the conflict by political means, Hu said.
MACAO, Jan. 10 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping Saturday said here that Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) should promote its long-term economic diversification. Xi, who paid the first official visit to Macao since assuming the office of Chinese Vice President in March 2008, made the remark when meeting with the SAR's Chief Executive Ho Hau Wah and 113 representatives from all walks of the local society in the Macao East Asian Games Dome. Like the Chinese mainland and other places, Macao was hit by the impact of the global financial crisis recently and encountered some difficulties, Xi said, adding that despite this, "we should be confident as there are also opportunities and conditions for development." Xi also said that the central government has launched a series of policies and measures to expand domestic demand and boost economic development. "We are still confident that we can curb the further spread and impact of the global financial crisis and contain its damage, so as to achieve a new period of stable and rapid economic development," he said. To ensure Macao's stable development in the face of global financial crisis, China's central government announced nine measures aimed to support Macao in six areas on Dec. 19, 2008. These measures mainly concerned promoting the financial and infrastructure cooperation between the mainland and Macao, the overall opening-up of the mainland's service sector to Macao, and helping Macao's small-and-medium sized enterprises. He also pointed out that Macao's capacity in various fields has been greatly strengthened since its return to the motherland nine years ago, and the SAR government has relatively sufficient financial supply and abundant knowledge and experience of how to tackle the crisis. As for the development of Hengqin Island, a part of neighboring mainland city Zhuhai, Xi said the central government has decided to develop the island, but the development will be launched only when preparatory works were fully completed. The development of Hengqin Island will provide new spaces for the diversification of Macao's economy, he said, adding that the central government will take Macao's needs into full consideration. Located close to Macao, Hengqin Island is about three times the size of Macao. The land-strapped SAR has long been requesting a part in its development. Xi arrived in Macao earlier this morning, starting his two-day visit to the island city. Xi paid two visits to the SAR in 2001 and 2005 respectively before assuming the Chinese vice-presidency.
