This landlocked state shouldn't have any islands. But the deadly flooding that has deluged parts of Nebraska could get worse before it gets better."This really is the most devastating flooding we've probably ever had in our state's history, from the standpoint of how widespread it is," Gov. Pete Ricketts said Monday.More than 8 million people are under flood warnings in the Midwest and the Mississippi River Valley, said CNN meteorologist Dave Hennen."Eastern Nebraska remains the hardest hit area, with much of the southeast part of the state under flood warnings," he said. The flooding has already killed two people in Nebraska and one man in Iowa. Ricketts said at least one person remains missing in Nebraska.Flood records have been shattered in 17 places, and more rivers will likely break cresting records this week, according to the Nebraska Emergency Management Agency. (A crest is the highest point of a flood wave.)Now the big concern is floodwater draining downstream, further deluging communities that can't take any more water.3 deaths include a farmer trying to rescue othersNebraskan James Wilke, a farmer in Platte County, used his tractor to try to help a person trapped in a vehicle, NEMA spokesman Mike Wight said."With the guidance of emergency responders, James drove his tractor over the Shell Creek bridge on the Monestary Road and the bridge gave out. James and the tractor went down into the flood water below," family friend Jodi L. But Galan, 55, succumbed to his injuries and died at a hospital in Lincoln. This nightmare started with a 'bomb cyclone' The mammoth flooding follows a powerful "bomb cyclone" that slammed the central US last week with hurricane-like winds and blizzard conditions.Melting snow ended up in rivers and streams, causing flooding and cresting days after the precipitation was over.Nebraska's Offutt Air Force Base, just south of Omaha, said about 30 buildings were hit with floodwater."Team Offutt has done an incredible job working together to battle this historic flood as best we can," said Col. TORONTO, Canada – The Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) says it won’t send its team to the Tokyo Olympics unless they’re postponed until next year due to the coronavirus pandemic. The 2020 Games were set to start on July 24 and run through August 9, but the ongoing spread of the COVID-19 has many calling for them to be rescheduled. That includes the COC, which is asking the International Olympic Committee, the International Paralympic Committee and the World Health Organization to postpone the Games for one year. COC said it would offer its full support in helping navigate all the complexities that rescheduling the Games would bring.“While we recognize the inherent complexities around a postponement, nothing is more important than the health and safety of our athletes and the world community,” wrote 822

The powerful wildfires that have burned millions of acres of land are spreading so much smoke into the sky, NASA said that the smoke has circumnavigated the Earth. NASA said that the NOAA/NASA Suomi NPP satellite detected smoke south of Australia that was carried completely around the world. NASA uses its satellite fleet to detect wildfires, sometimes detecting wildfires in remote areas before officials on the ground. "NASA satellites can show the movement of the smoke across the globe as evidenced above, but other instruments found onboard can give scientists, firefighters, health experts, local government, and others information about what is happening on the ground in real-time," NASA said.Tracking the smoke also allows NASA to detect changes in air quality. Aerosols from wildfire smoke, as well as pollution and volcanic ash, can affect human health. "Aerosols compromise human health when inhaled by people with asthma or other respiratory illnesses," NASA said. "Aerosols also have an affect on the weather and climate by cooling or warming the earth, helping or preventing clouds from forming." 1124

The US economy added only 20,000 jobs in February, a surprisingly low number that bucked the trend of huge jobs gains in recent months. That was the fewest jobs gained in a month since September 2017.The unemployment rate fell to 3.8% as fewer unemployed people were looking for work. The Labor Department suggested that furloughed workers from the government shutdown returning to work also contributed to the the lower unemployment rate. 450
