SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The discovery of suspicious packages near a downtown San Diego building prompted evacuations, but the boxes were later determined to be harmless.Authorities were called an area near the intersection of 6th Avenue and B Street at around 8:30 a.m. after several white boxes were found and deemed suspicious. The WeWork building through the 13th floor was evacuated and traffic lanes were closed in a nearby area due to the investigation. San Diego Union-Tribune staff members, who occupy space in the building, were forced to evacuate, 10News learned."We’ve seen some different tragedies in newsrooms around the country so I don’t think this is 100% a surprise for any newsroom to face something like this. But it’s not something I expected waking up to this morning," UT Immigration Reporter Kate Morrissey said. RELATED: 'Act of terror': Suspicious devices sent to multiple politicians, ex-president and mediaThe building also houses an office for Sen. Kamala Harris, the San Diego Fire Department headquarters, and other government offices.10News spoke to Christine Otis, who owns Christine's Coffee & Co., a small stand on the corner of B Street and 6th Avenue. She said she noticed the packages at 6am when she opened her stand. She thought nothing of them until she was suddenly forced to close her shop.“I had some people in line. It was a really busy time, so it wasn’t a good time to leave," Otis said. At 8:15 am, a passerby had flagged down Lt. Kevin Wadham, saying this cannot be a coincidence. Hours earlier, news of the Secret Service intercepting suspicious packages addressed to Former First Lady Hillary Clinton, President Obama, and CNN broke. The boxes in San Diego were at the SanDiego Union-Tribune headquarters, Senator Kamala Harris’ office, and other businesses.“Out of an abundance of caution, this building at 6th and B was evacuated, and all the neighboring businesses," Lt. Kevin Wadhams said. San Diego Police immediately called their Bomb Unit. They X-Rayed the boxes and found they contained nothing suspicious. The contents were a shoe, a football, an empty bag of chips, two children’s books, and a hat. An hour later, and after a whirlwind of emotions, Otis was able to re-open her shop.“It was kind of scary. I’ve been here for 15 years. And nothing like that has ever happened," Otis said.Following an inspection by a bomb squad, evacuation order was lifted.None of the packages were addressed to anyone specific or implied a threat. The packages were not sealed and also had a mixture of writing on them. Surveillance video showed an unknown person placing the packages at the location at about 1:45 a.m., according to San Diego Police. Police added that the area is frequented by transients at night.SDPD, ATF, and FBI officials were all taking part in the investigation.10News spoke to Threat Assessment Professional, Wendy Patrick. She said the FBI investigators are now focusing on profiling the senders.“What do the targets have in common? This case appears to be political ideology. But is it more than that" Patrick said. These acts of terror can be inspired by a variety of things, Patrick said. It could be a stab at a political party, a news organizations, or a personal vendetta or grievance. While this morning’s incident at the San Diego Union-Tribune headquarters turned out to be non-threatening, Patrick said the heavy police presence and bomb squad response were appropriate."We want to make sure that we never let our guard down and we take every report as serious as we can," Patrick said. Unlike political figures, regular citizens do not have the luxury of having the secret service monitoring our mail. So Patrick said it is essential that we be extra vigilant, especially during the season of giving. “Even rudimentary bombs can explode in your face," Patrick said. "Unfamiliar packages should be treated with caution. Is there a return address and is it a name you don’t recognize? You might want to check that out before you just rip the thing open.”Earlier Wednesday morning, the U.S. Secret Service intercepted two suspicious packages -- one addressed to former President Barack Obama and the other addressed to Hillary Clinton -- that contained potentially explosive devices.A suspicious package in the mailroom of CNN's New York City newsroom led to a building evacuation. 4441

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The former head of the Poway Unified School District appeared in court Monday for a preliminary hearing on five felony charges.Officials charged John Collins with misappropriating and misuse of public money. The complaint accuses Collins of misappropriation of public money dealing with vacation time and sick leave. Poway Unified fired Collins in 2017 after a scathing audit had alleged he received more than 0,000 in overpayments and unauthorized payments. The audit also claims there were an additional ,000 in other transactions that violated district policy and some questionable purchases for airline tickets, dinners and hotel fees.Collins attorney did not respond to 10News request for a comment, but in the past, Collins denied engaging in conduct that was dishonest. If convicted on all charges, Collins could face more than seven years behind bars. 894

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Sure, it may not be Torrey Pines, but Liberty Station's Loma Club is considered a great golf course in its own unique way.For beginners, the club is the perfect, reasonably priced way to get on the green. For veterans, a no frills way to work on your game."It's short, it's inexpensive, and it's well kept," Fred Leipold, an avid Loma Club golfer, told 10News.Lauren Gomez first played at the club when she was just a toddler. Now, she tees off with a scholarship to Pepperdine University in her back pocket. "I know a lot of kids come out here to practice. There's not a lot of golf courses around here, so it's really important to Point Loma," Gomez said.More than a century of history sits in the club's soil. At one time, a young Phil Mickelson played tournament at what was then called Sail Ho.Which is why players and locals were shocked to learn the Loma Club put out a notice that it will close in late December.Point Loma residents flooded social media following the news, worried that the same thing could happen in other nearby communities: Golf courses shutting down with plans to fill the land with housing. Residents from Escondido to Chula Vista have all seen long battles with developers."I think somebody's going to recognize the importance. You really can't tear this out," golfer Rick Gomez said. "It's too perfect."For the time being, those fears were put to rest, after a spokesperson with Pendulum Property Partners, who owns the Loma Club property, said the site would remain a golf course. The notice was issued after they were unable to reach a new lease deal with the current course operator: 1646

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The City of San Diego's Development Services division is still investigating the platform that collapsed at a Barrio Logan gym this weekend and injured 21 minors and a few adults. At least one minor is still in the hospital with a broken pelvis, we're told.A city spokesperson reported to 10 News on Tuesday that no further details would be released until the investigation is complete. On Monday, the spokesperson said there were definite code violations and missing permits at Vault PK parkour gym, where the incident happened. Whether the gym will face any penalties is still unknown. The gym has only been open for a few months. On a Facebook post, it appears much of the construction of the facility was done by the owner's immediate family.  On Monday, San Diego Police Department's media relations division confirmed that the incident is a civil matter and the department will not be recommending any criminal charges, including criminal negligence.  There is another Vault PK parkour gym in Torrance. We called the facility today. Someone answered the phone and said the facility is closed for inspections. No further details were given.  1222

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The July Fourth holiday weekend is expected to bring large crowds to San Diego's beaches.Los Angeles beaches will be closed this weekend, and that has some concerned that even more people will flock to San Diego's beaches.Debra Moore lives in Encinitas. She'd like the beaches closed indefinitely."I think they opened way too soon, and we all saw this coming. They told us it was going to come, and I'm sorry so many more people had to get sick," said Moore. She said young people in her neighborhood aren't taking the pandemic seriously."Nobody is wearing a mask, nobody is social distancing. People are walking around my neighborhood all the time, or on the beach, just like it's normal, and nothing is normal anymore," said Moore.Del Mar Councilman Dave Druker also has concerns."People are very worried about lifeguards being overwhelmed and the whole city being overwhelmed with visitors, cause there's nowhere else to go," said councilman Druker.Tuesday, San Diego county supervisor Nathan Fletcher said it's up to officials in coastal communities to decide whether beaches should close this weekend.Fletcher also said all of the coronavirus outbreaks have been linked to indoor settings. He said he doesn't think closing beaches is necessary right now. 1285
