NANNING, Oct. 19 (Xinhua) -- China and member states on the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) are seeking new cooperation opportunities at the 7th China-ASEAN Expo while reviewing fruitful results from more than nine months' operation of China-ASEAN free trade area (CAFTA).The 7th China-ASEAN Expo (CAEXPO) and China-ASEAN Business and Investment Summit, with the theme of free trade and new opportunities, opens Tuesday in Nanning, capital of south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.Buoyed by the zero-tariff framework under the CAFTA, more than 2,000 enterprises from home and abroad are taking part in the 7th CAEXPO, which has 4,600 exhibition booths. HANOI, Sept. 11 (Xinhua) -- A trade fair was held in Vietnam's capital city of Hanoi on Saturday with participation of companies from Vietnam and China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.At the fair, more than 100 companies from China's Guangxi brought here nearly 200 projects in various sectors including resources development, agriculture products processing, agricultural machinery production, sugar production and high technology.Ma Biao, chairman of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region said at the fair that Guangxi and Vietnam have seen strengthened trade and economic links in recent years.Vietnam has been Guangxi's largest trade partner for eleven years, said Ma. Vietnam is also a major destination for Guangxi's outbound investment.Ma said he is confident that cooperation between Guangxi and Vietnam will be further expanded and enriched in the coming time.A total of 64 cooperation agreements were inked at the fair, with the estimated value of 1.96 billion U.S. dollars.The trade fair is part of the activities held during Ma's six- day visit in Vietnam. Ma is leading a 1,000-member delegation here for trade and culture promotion.
BEIJING, Sept. 9 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao on Thursday, the eve of Teachers' Day, called on teachers to embrace reform and innovation in teaching and enhance teaching standards.Hu made the call during a visit to the Renmin University of China in Beijing and its affiliated high school.During his visit to the school campuses, Hu held cordial talks with students, watched performances staged by students taking arts classes, and conveyed festival greetings to the teaching faculties.At the high school, Hu urged school authorities to respect students' individuality, tap their potentials, and help students improve their overall competence.At a lecture hall of the university, he called on university professors to be more productive in their scientific research so as to provide more reference for the government in decision-making.Hu also urged the university administration and teaching faculty to promote glorious university traditions, embrace reform and innovation, and improve its education quality.After the tour to the university, Hu met national model teachers and teachers who made outstanding contributions during the country's earthquake-relief work.He called on the country's teachers to learn from the model teachers, cultivate noble virtues, improve their professional standards and make greater contributions to the scientific development of the country's educational cause.
BEIJING, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) -- Participants at a human rights forum in Beijing have paid tribute to China's treatment of human rights issues."We have a different culture. The Chinese have a different culture. We would appreciate the situation where human rights are dealt with within their own cultural contexts," Elisabeth Perioli Bjornstol, a Norwegian participant on a panel discussion at the forum, said Wednesday.The panel discussion was a part of the two-day Beijing Forum on Human Rights that started Tuesday. The forum attracted about 80 officials, scholars and experts from more than 25 countries, regions and international organizations.China's human rights situation was one of the focal points at the forum."It is highly important to reflect and discuss the key issues of human rights worldwide. People now can come and see how China develops. Ignorance and lack of information were the root causes for many conflicts," Elisabeth Perioli Bjornstol added.Jiang Guoqing, a professor from China Foreign Affairs University, said on the same panel discussion that since reform and opening up was initiated in 1978, China has made great progress in both human rights and modernization.He Ying, vice president of Heilongjiang University, said, "The West often criticizes China for not progressing fast. It also criticizes China for its recognition of individuals' rights. But I think the West needs to recognize China as a developing country that is moving in the right direction in many fields."
XIAMEN, Sept. 5 (Xinhua) -- China's outbound direct investment (ODI) rose 1.1 percent year on year to 56.53 billion U.S. dollars in 2009, according to a government report issued Sunday.Non-financial ODI, which accounts for 84.5 percent of the total, stood at 47.8 billion U.S. dollars last year, up 14.2 percent from one year earlier, while the country's overseas investment in financial sectors declined 37.9 percent to 8.7 billion U.S. dollars, according to a report jointly released by the Ministry of Commerce, the National Bureau of Statistics and the State Administration of Foreign Exchange.By the end of 2009, Chinese enterprises established 13,000 overseas companies in 177 countries, with combined assets topping 1 trillion U.S. dollars, according to the report.
