BEIJING, Oct. 30 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping said here Friday that members of the Communist Party of China (CPC) should better comprehend the Scientific Outlook on Development and use it to guide their work.     Xi, who is also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, called for intensified efforts of CPC members to study the gist of the recently concluded Fourth Plenary Session of the 17th CPC Central Committee and incorporate the requirements of Scientific Outlook on Development into daily work and life.     Xi made the remarks at a meeting on further studying and implementing the Scientific Outlook on Development.     The Scientific Outlook on Development stresses people-oriented, comprehensive, coordinated and sustainable economic and social development.     The Fourth Plenary Session of the 17th CPC Central Committee, which concluded on Sept. 18, decided to expand democracy within the Party and further fight corruption.

BEIJING, Nov. 25 (Xinhua) -- An awarding ceremony was held here Wednesday to honor 214 outstanding demobilized soldiers in the country.     President Hu Jintao, Premier Wen Jiabao and Li Changchun, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, met with the retired servicemen at the Great Hall of the People and congratulated them on their achievements. Chinese leaders Hu Jintao (R Front), Wen Jiabao (2nd R) and Li Changchun (1st R) meet with demobilized soldiers who will receive awards prior to an awarding ceremony held at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, capital of China, Nov. 25, 2009. Vice Premier Hui Liangyu delivered a speech at the ceremony, in which he hailed the demobilized soldiers as the treasures of the country.     They played an important role in boosting the modernization drive, Hui said.     Hui urged all retired servicemen to make greater contribution to the country's economic development and social stability.

BEIJING, Nov. 17 (Xinhua)-- The United States welcomes the peaceful development of cross-Straits ties and "more positive and stable" cross-Straits relations, said a China-US Joint Statement issued here Tuesday.     The statement said that both sides underscored the importance of the Taiwan issue in China-US relations.     The Chinese side emphasized that the Taiwan issue concerns China's sovereignty and territorial integrity, and expressed the hope that the US side will honor its relevant commitments and appreciate and support the Chinese side's position on this issue.     The US side stated that the United States follows its one-China policy and abides by the principles of the three Sino-US joint communiques, said the statement.     The two sides reiterated that "the fundamental principle of respect for each other's sovereignty and territorial integrity is at the core of the three Sino-US joint communiques which guide China-US relations. Neither side supports any attempts by any force to undermine this principle," said the statement.     The two sides agreed that respecting each other's core interests is extremely important to ensure steady progress in China-US relations.     Both countries believe that to nurture and deepen bilateral strategic trust is essential to China-US relations in the new era.     The US side reiterated that it welcomes a strong, prosperous and successful China that plays a greater role in world affairs.     The two sides are of the view that in the 21st century, global challenges are growing, countries are more interdependent, and theneed for peace, development and cooperation is increasing. BEIJING, Jan. 8 (Xinhua) -- China issued a directive Friday that aims to promote renovation of the substandard dwellings in the country's urban areas and at state-owned factories and mines, in a move to improve the livelihood of low-income people.     Renovation of squatter homes in cities and at state-owned factories should be completed in the next fives years, according to the directive posted by the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development on its website.     Priority should be given to "the shanty towns covering large areas and with severe safety defects," according to the ministry.     It also urged relevant departments to give full respect to the rights and interests of the people living in substandard dwellings, who are mainly low-income laid-off workers, and to ensure that renovating work be conducted in an open and fair way.     The directive put forward multiple ways to finance the renovation work, including government funds, favorable loans from financial institutions, and tax rebates.     By the end of 2008, China had 11.48 million families living in substandard housing, 7.44 million of which lived in cities, 2.38 million near state-owned plants and mines, 1.66 million in forest zones and reclamation areas.

GENEVA, Nov. 30 (Xinhua) -- China will maintain the stability of its Renminbi (RMB) exchange rate all along, which does good for the world economic recovery, Commerce Minister Chen Deming said on Monday.     China's exchange rate reform has continued smoothly, and the value of RMB has risen by some 20 percent against the U.S. dollar since 2005, Chen told reporters in Geneva, where he is attending a ministerial conference of the World Trade Organization.     Despite the impact of the global financial crisis and all kinds of other difficulties, the Chinese government has actively tried to boost domestic consumption and stimulate imports, Chen said. Visiting Chinese Commerce Minister Chen Deming attends a launching ceremony of China-Swiss joint study to examine the feasibility of a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) in Geneva, Switzerland, Nov. 30, 2009    Maintaining a relatively stable RMB exchange rate serves the need of China's economic development as well as the world's economic stability, he added.     According to the minister, China's foreign trade surplus is expected to drop by more than a third to 190 billion dollars this year from last year's 290 billion dollars.     Chen also urged the world's major reserve currencies to remain stable. He said the continuous depreciation of these currencies had caused much difficulty for the world economy, and that the attempts to transfer the difficulty to other countries are unjustifiable.
