BEIJING, Oct. 17 (Xinhua) -- The Communist Party of China (CPC) and Kuomintang (KMT) both expressed wish to promote cross-Strait trust and common understanding as Ma Ying-jeou took the position as the KMT chairman on Saturday.     The CPC Central Committee Saturday congratulated the Kuomintang(KMT) on the convocation of its18th congress, expecting the two parties to deepen mutual trust, increase exchanges and expand common understanding.     In a reply, the KMT Central Committee said they will work with the CPC for improving trust and mutual benefits, in a bid to improve the welfare of people on both sides.     At the congress, the KMT again included the "common aspirations and prospects for peace and development across the Taiwan Strait, "reached between the CPC and KMT in 2005, in its political guideline. Taiwan leader Ma Ying-jeou assumed the position of the island's ruling party chairman at Kuomintang's 18th plenary congress Saturday morning    Wu Yongping, deputy director of the Institute of Taiwan Studies, Tsinghua University, told Xinhua that this gave a positive signal that the KMT pledged again to further development of cross-Strait relations , which is helpful for further dialogues between the CPC and the KMT.     At the congress, Ma appointed Lien Chan and Wu Poh-hsiung as KMT honorary chairmen. They would assist Ma on cross-Strait affairs and external exchanges, according to Ma.     Hu Jintao, general secretary of the CPC Central Committee, congratulated Lien Chan on continuing to be KMT honorary chairman and Wu Poh-hsiung on taking the position as honorary chairman.     The two responded with commitments to peaceful development of cross-Strait relations.     Lien said in a statement that since the two sides resumed systematic talks based on the 1992 Consensus, peace and stability across the Strait have been greatly enhanced and people's welfare improved.     "We should work even harder to consolidate the five-point common aspirations and prospects," Lien said.     Wu also noted that the two parties should work together for peace and development with "sincerity and goodwill."     Zhu Weidong, deputy director fo the Institute of Taiwan Studies, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, said, "Through the congress, we can see the KMT will not change its stance on easing cross-Strait relations, promoting exchanges with the CPC and carrying on the platform between the two parties."

BEIJING, Sept. 7 (Xinhua) -- China vows to strengthen the prevention and control of the A/H1N1 flu virus in the run-up to the National Day celebrations, amid fears that the situation will worsen through autumn. According to a statement released after a meeting held by the State Council here Monday, schools are currently the key places in the country's fight against the virus and classes should be suspended "properly" to avoid mass infection when an outbreak occurs.     "Currently the global epidemic situation is getting worse. As autumn comes, the number of domestic cases in China is also on the rise... The prevention and control work faces fresh obstacles," said the statement.     Primary and secondary schools in Urumqi, capital of northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, remained closed Monday in the wake of a recent outbreak of 43 A/H1N1 influenza cases.     Similar outbreaks have also been reported at schools in other regions, including the provinces of Henan, Hunan, Jiangsu, Anhui and Hainan, as well as the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.     The State Council urged railway and aviation departments to improve their emergency plan against possible epidemic outbreak in crowded situations.     According to the statement, medical staff, technical equipment and materials should be ready at any moment in case of an emergency -- especially around the National Day, which falls on Oct. 1.     In addition, the State Council urged medical companies to stock vaccine and other medicines and ensure vaccine safety for human use.     The meeting was presided over by premier Wen Jiabao.     By last Friday night, 4,415 cases of A/H1N1 flu had been reported on the Chinese mainland, of which 3,577 have recovered. UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 22 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao said here on Tuesday the international community should tackle global climate change through common development, calling for international joint work and pledging China's continued efforts on this issue.     "Global climate change has a profound impact on the existence and development of mankind and is a major challenge facing all countries," the president said when addressing the UN climate change summit.     "Climate change is an environment issue, but also, and more importantly, a development issue," Hu said.     "We should and can only advance efforts to address climate change in the course of development and meet the challenge through common development," he said. 　　FOUR PRINCIPLES     The Chinese president outlined four principles needed for a successful concerted effort to deal with climate change worldwide.     Hu said that fulfilling respective responsibilities, achieving mutual benefit and a win-win outcome, promoting common development and ensuring financing and technology were of utmost importance in making these efforts work. We will endeavor to increase the share of non-fossil fuels in primary energy consumption to around 15 percent by 2020," he added.     Third, China will energetically increase forest carbon sink and endeavor to increase forest coverage by 40 million hectares and forest stock volume by 1.3 billion cubic meters by 2020 from the 2005 levels, Hu said.     "Fourth, we will step up effort to develop green economy, low-carbon economy and circular economy, and enhance research, development and dissemination of climate-friendly technologies," he added.     "Out of a sense of responsibility to the world ... China has taken and will continue to take determined and practical steps to tackle this challenge," said the president.     The Chinese president arrived here Monday for the UN climate change summit and other UN meetings. He will also travel to Pittsburgh for the G20 summit scheduled for Thursday and Friday.  

WUHAN, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) -- East Star Airlines, the debt-laden private airline based in central China's Wuhan City, officially went bankrupt after its restructuring application was rejected Thursday.     The Intermediate People's Court in Wuhan City said the plan submitted by the East Star Group and ChinaEquity was unfeasible and failed to meet the conditions for a legal restructuring.     ChinaEquity, an investment company founded in 1999 in Beijing, had promised to invest 200 million to 300 million yuan (29 million to 44 million U.S. dollars) for the restructuring plan.     However, it did not specify the source of the funding and failed to provide certificates and documents, and lacked measures to protect creditors, the court said.     The court said East Star Airlines had no operating income in 2008, while ChinaEquity recorded 470,000 yuan in main business income and a 187,477-yuan deficit last year.
